Hudsonville High School % IONEER Editors: Beth Dean Deb De Went Jan Ensing Co-Editors: Jane Lampen Jan Van Noord Becky Ver Hoeven It seems like it was yesterday That life revolved around cracker jacks and sand castles, bedtime stories which made me laugh, kittens up a tree, and pinning tails on a donkey. And all the while I pretended I was grown up. But somewhere along the way These were pushed Into the attic of my minds 2 Taking their place I find 7th hours, college applications, deadlines, exams, and graduation. All of which cause me to retreat To the safety and innocence of childhood. Remember how scared and ner- vous you were the first day of high school? And all of the rumors you heard of how freshman always got picked on. Then there was the big thrill of getting your class rings ... right sophomores? Juniors found out how important it was to save their money for sponsoring the spring prom. And last but not least ... the day you've all been waiting for or maybe even dreading. Seniors ... Graduation. These past four years went much too fast for all of us but I'm sure they've left an imprint on each of our lives. All that we have left are memories and old yearbooks to look back on. Thank you for giving us four years that will not easily be for- gotten . . . and hang in there freshmen! 4 On behalf of the senior class of 1975, we would like to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Van Koughnet. He has put a great deal of time into float-making, dances, the prom, fund-raising projects, and being our class sponsor for three years. We would also like to thank Mr. Smith who also served as our class sponsor. Leaders Provide Voice In Student Affairs Executive Board: (Bottom to top), Randy Bohl-V. Pres., Sara Overway-Rec. Although I am an exchange student, everybody is so friendly and I am feeling as good as in my country. When I left Brazil I was glad, but I was nervous because I didn't know the American people or the American life but they all are very nice. I am so glad to spend six months with you, and I can't say how to thank all of you for everything that you have done and are doing to help me to make my American life very nice. When these six months are done I will have to go back to Brazil. I will be happy because I will see my family and my friends but I will miss everything here. The Toppens are so friendly and I never will forget them, as every person of Hudsonville High School. I will remember these six months all my life. I hope to meet someday again and if someone goes to Brazil, I will be waiting to see you. (I live on the other side of the world) Here I am, but still now sometimes I have to tell myself that I am really here and that it's not a dream. Before I came I heard a lot of things about America and I always thought the Americans were kind of serious. But now I can see the people joke a lot and I'm really having a lot of fun, (Really much more than I thought it would be possible). I really think I'm a lucky person for being here with such nice people and living with a wonderful family. The Gerkins have been really as my real family and words can not explain how happy I am with them. I am having a lot of fun at school and I'm really thank- ful to everybody for their kindness and their friendship by explaining to me words that I don't know, by having always smiles on their faces and by letting me share their greatest moments, their problems and everything else. I really don't like to think about the end of the semes- ter because I'll have to leave the people I have grown to love and understand in a short time. But this is an experi- ence that I'll never forget in my whole life and I'll go back to Brazil with much more knowledge and understanding about America and the people's way of life. When I go back I'll be able to tell my people how nice the people are here. I know I'll never be an exchange student again, but maybe one day I'll come back here to see my friends and the wonderful things as the snow and the sunset again. (I really hope so). If you go to Brazil, come to visit me. You are also going to have a lot of fun. Sincerely yours 67 V r Almost a year ago—in April 1974-1 got a message that I was accepted on Youth for Understanding's International Exchange Program. One year in the USA! The fall 1973: Nine years in the required school had made me pretty sick of studying. I went to the first of two years in a school called the Gymnasium which I have to attend to go to the university. But to get good grades, I needed a break before the last year. I heard about the YFU—scholarship which was a great chance to get away for awhile. Get away from the same rut in every day, my family and even my friends. I had a need to find myself. The answer came in the spring. After different tests I was finally accepted on the program. It was hard to be- lieve. It even made me a little bit scared. Was I ready for an experience like this? I have always been dreaming about traveling, to learn to understand different people, cultures, religions and languages but I could never imag- ine what it is like. Sweden is considered to be the most Americanized country in Europe and through the Swedish school, media and older friends that have been here I think I knew pretty much what the USA is like-even places like Hudsonville. But still, it has been quite an experience for me. Here I take the chance to thank you, everybody, that has made my time here so enjoyable. It is a great feeling just to walk down the hall and meet everybody smiling and saying hi to me. Most of all I would like to tell you all that what I appreciate most is what two families have given me. They are Mr. Ward DeWent's and Mr. Del Giem's families. To everybody else, thanks for all the time you have taken to explain and understand, the rides I have gotten from place to place, taking me skiing, horseback riding etc. and in many other ways made me feel as one of you. I hope that you all get a chance to travel sooner or later and remember that my home is always open for you when you come by. 68 ... First of all, there's our fine library which keeps adding to its collections all the time. If reading books doesn't turn you on, then you can always read music with Mr. Mumma or Nate. You could also delve into your speaking tal- ents and become a great actor or orayor by subjecting yourself to Mrs. Rensland's tutelage. Many hours of spe- cial attention were devoted to pro- vide a change that hopefully would please everyone. Although we were defeated by Wayland 19-12, thrill and excitement were shown by students as Seniors won the Spirit Week Com- petition, Juniors were announced Float Competition winners, and Che- ryl Hoezee and Ron Van Dam were named Queen and King for the 1974- 1975 school year. 84 Traditional Homecoming i Student Participation Hats and crazy socks, the 50 s, inside out clothes, Saddie Hawkins and the traditional maze and blue day were all a part of 1974-75 Spirit Week. Though there was close competition for the spirit jug, se- niors took first place. Shows Spirit Rising Prices Didn't Effect Cheaper By The Dozen The play Cheaper By The Dozen , was taken from a book by the same title written by Frank Cilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. This humorous true story relates in- cidents from the Gilbreth family, whose fa- ther thought that households could be run like factories: His efficiency ideas caused much havoc with his large family. After six weeks of hard work at practice and building, the cast and crew came up with a really fine production. Not only is a play a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun and a great learning experience. Everyone involved would agree that being in a play has got to be a really memorable event. 91 Climb Every Mountain One of the highlights of last spring was the 1973-1974 Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. It was held at the Carousel Mountain Ski Lodge. It included punch served by the Sophomore class officers and their escorts, a speech by the Junior Class President Walter Teachout, music by the Bridge, and much more. It was a very memorable occasion. 92 Girls Net Trophy Snow, humid 85° temperatures—the girls tennis team conquered the weather as well as the majority of their op- ponents as they finished with an 8-4 record, which included a 5-1 championship record in the O.K. Blue Conference. The outstanding achievement of the team was defeating closest rival Comstock Park in the conference meet. Linda Woodwyk in 2nd singles, jan VanNoord—Becky VerHoeven in 1st doubles, and Mary DeWeerd—Marcia Wabeke in 2nd doubles finished in 1st place. Cindy Cooley in 1st singles and Karen VanFarowe—Nancy TenHave in 3rd doubles fin- ished 3rd. The outstanding individual performance was by Linda Woodwyk who won 16 consecutive sets in confer- ence play. Other fine records were turned in by Mary DeWeerd—Marcia Wabeke who lost only 3 sets in the con- ference, finishing with a fine 11-1 overall record and (an VanNoord—Becky VerHoeven who were 10-2 overall. 1st row: B. While partici- pating in eighteen matches, the team won sev- enteen and lost one. The one loss was to Caledonia by one stroke on team total. This loss was later reversed at the Green Ridge Country Club with the Eagles winning by a total of three strokes and thus becoming league champions. The main reason for the team's success was the very consistent play of five team members: Mark Vruggink, Dave Schut, Steve Smallegan, Craig Geers, and Ted Van Noord. These five golfers averaged between 41 and 42 strokes per nine holes. They were five out of a total of twenty-six young men on the team. This large turnout made it possible to play several junior varsity matches with only underclassmen partici- pating. Several freshmen and sophomores played very well in these J.V. matches, thus in- dicating some very good golf will also be played in the future. 106 1st row: C. Geers, J. Cook, G. MacOwen, T. With a starting line-up of Ron VanDam, Paul VanNoord, Ron Heemstra, Dave Schut, and Ted VanNoord the team was small in size but big in hustle and determination. With help from sub- stitutes Joel Showmaker, Russ Heiss, Kurt Neder- veld and Tom Perrin the team highlighted the season with a second place finish in the OK Blue Division and an excellent performance in the District Tournament with a convincing win over West Ottawa and a close loss to a strong Zee- land team. Individual statistics showed Ron VanDam at 5 11 as the team leader in rebounds and one of our leading scorers along with Dave Schut. Paul VanNoord was our most accurate field goal shooter with 49%, Dave Schut lead in free throw percentage with 75%. Cheerleaders Arouse Spirit Being a cheerleader is_____ forgetting a cheer, falling off the top of a mount, smiling until your mouth hurts, jumping til your legs ache, forgetting how to do the school song at a pep assembly, freezing your legs at a football game, having enough spirit for the whole school, never showing defeat, being at a clinic from eight in the morning til four in the afternoon, yelling til you've gone hoarse, practicing three or four nights a week for six months, an honor in the greatest sense of the word. Varsity: L. Woodwyk, T. Valkier, B. Dean, P. Reese, C. Reese, R. Ypma, L. Jurewicz 120 J.V.: (bottom to top) P. Dirkse, M. Hoezee, N. Ten Have, S. Cady, D. Dejonge, C. Hut, L. Meyaard, L. Eight of the losses were by a total of 11 runs. There were some fine performances during the season and the team played some good aggressive baseball. Individual performances were led by Craig Reis-, ter and Joe Perrin, both all-conference selections. Craig, selected as the White Division first baseman, batted .393, set a school record with 5 home runs for the season, tied the season record for extra base hits, and led the team in runs batted in with 19. Craig also led the pitchers with a 1.63 earned run average and an average of 7 strike-outs per game. Joe Perrin was selected as an all-conference out- fielder for the second year in a row. Batting .386, he led the team with 10 stolen bases. Joe was team leader in doubles and tied with Craig for the most hits. 122 J.V s Gain Experience The J.V. Enthusiam of this track team was high at the beginning and at end of the year. Coach Van Der Meulen and myself are very enthusiastic about the possibilities of winning the first track championship ever in the history of this school. We are convinced that if we do not win it this year, we will be very close and in the very near future we'll win. It is a very cov- eted honor of being first in the league. 124 Tennis Finished Fifth in OK White The tennis team finished in fifth place in their last year in the OK White—in a record of 7-7 in the conference they defeated Forest Hills Northern, Wyoming Park, South Christian each twice and Ke- nowa Hills once. The season was also highlighted by several non- league wins including one over Unity. Seniors, Kent Miller or Daryl Bol- huis played 1 singles most of the year, and Cal Vruggink will be lost next year, but a wealth of talent from the underclassmen should bring improvement next year in the OK Blue.
