Will it be the prom and the trip to the beach afterward, the many football games in the rain, the time you broke a school record, or was it the time you flipped in the hall or fell asleep in class? Whatever memories you hold, follow along as we re- trace our steps through this past year. 3 lis year's yearbook is dedicat to three men who have done a for us in the last four years. No natter how bad we messed the chool up, they were always there to clean up after us. We, the Sen- ior class of 1973, feel that these men, Warren Huyser, Gerrit Kuip- ers, and Bob Van Zyl, deserve recognition for the great job they have done. So we would like to dedicate this yearbook to them, our Janitors. Thanks! VALEDICTORIAN The Valedictorian for the Class of 1973 is Bruce Smith. He is very deserving of this honor having main- tained a 3.97 average during his four years at H.H.S. Congratulations, Bruce on a job well done! SALUTATORIAN Salutatorian honors for the Class of 1973 go to Dave Smith having the second highest grade point average in the class, an excellent 3.86. A very fine effort, Dave. Congratulations! It is a story of a young woman's attempt to keep her sweetheart interested in his home country of Grand Fenwick. Her trys even include a space-trip to Mars. The spring of 1972 offered a change in pace. Under the direction of Mrs. Veenendall and Mr. Vredevoogd we had a week off from the regular routine of school. The stu- dents could pick two activities that they were in- terested in. S.A.C. 94 WEEK Each student picked his 2 electives out of a list of over 40 possibilities. Photographs on this page give you only a few of the many activities being conducted during the week. All in all, S.A.C. Week was considered a suc- cess by most students and most of the teachers. 95 At least 1 don't to walk alone. You are walking beside me. The highlight of the season was an 8-6 win over Godwin. Probably the best game the team played, the victory was well deserved as the defense stopped Godwin on several key plays. The team was led defensively by: Dale Dalman with an average of 11 tackles per game and 2 blocked punts for the season; Chuck Poelman with an average of about 8 tackles per game and a team high of 20 tackles in one game; and Tom Smedley, averaging 6 tackles per game and intercepting 3 passes during the season. Offensive leaders were: Gale Allen who, after rushing for 233 yards in the first 4 games, did a fine job of filling in at quarterback for the remainder of the season; Tom Perrin who rushed for 171 yards in just 4 games; and Clint VanderKolk, on the receiving end of 3 touchdown passes. The young men on the team acquired, through hard work and determination, an excellent knowledge of fundamental football and the future of football here at Hudsie looks good. As a team, their first win was against the Holland Christian Maroons. At the end of this season, we will say good-bye to Ralph McDon- ald and Bruce Smith. Both of these guys are good athletes and have done a lot for the team. However, there are some promising underclassmen who will be back next year to help take Ralph's and Bruce's place. The team is still improving and Coach Turrell is looking for an improved season next year. Good Luck, Wrestlers! FRONT ROW: J. Dykstra, D. Smith, T. Elenbaas, M. Hylarides, T. Smedley, B. Smith, D. In evaluating an athletic season many factors must be taken into consideration: The size of our players, the size of the opponents, the effort put forth by our players and the actual ability of the two teams involved in a game. The enjoyment of teamwork, which involved a group of young men coordinating their efforts toward a common goal, is another factor. At this point in the basketball season with seventeen games having been completed, we feel we have done our best and this has resulted in seven victories. Almost all of our opponents this year have been taller than our team and this has resulted in an uphill battle on many occasions. One of these uphill battles resulted in the highlight of the season, up to this point, when the Eagles defeated the much taller and undefeated Wyoming Park Vikings by the score of 77-75. This fine effort has given us sole possession of fourth place in our league. Thus, although not a tall or highly talented basketball team we have up to this point in the season gained enjoyment and satisfaction from our participation because we have given 100%. We feel this effort will be carried into next year's season by the many juniors and sophomores on this years team. 104 J Kevin Schut . Lew TenHave Ken Westhuis SENIORS TAKE LAST SHOTS FOR H.H.S. Rick Nyhuis, a junior, was outstanding the entire season and at the regional meet at Northview High School ran the best time of anyone on the Eagle team for the season. Ed Boone, midway through the season, blossomed into a fine runner. This was a fine team of young runners (one senior and two juniors) and if they continue to improve in the future as they have this year, Hudsonville will challenge anyone in the league next year. 109 GIRL’S VARSITY BASKETBALL STANDING: LEFT TO RIGHT, Manager, C. Spectacular perfor- mances were given by Carol VandeBunte who averaged over 22 points a game with 10 rebounds. Also Mary Reese was an outstanding rebounder. Mary Koster, Mary TenHave, and Beth Baar, seniors on the team, made a fine con- tribution. Congratulations team. 110 GIRLS J.V. BASKETBALL FRONT ROW: D. DeWindt, J. Lotterman, B. Emelander, J. The team was led by Don Childs, a junior, who compiled an average of 41 per nine holes. He also became the second golfer in the history of our school to shoot even par in a competitive round. This was accomplished against Zeeland and For- est Hills Northern, when Don shot 36 on the back nine holes at the Gracewil Golf Course. The team this year won ten matches and lost twelve. This record should improve in the future because of a fine group of freshman golfers on the team this year. Dave Schut and Craig Geers played 2 and 3 men, with Schut averaging 44 per nine holes played. Mark Vruggink and Steve Smallegan, also freshman, played in several matches and performed very well. Randy Storm a junior with an average of 47 should also help out next year. The only 2 seniore on the team were Keith Vanden Bosch and Dave Russell with Vanden Bosch averaging 45 while playing in 8 matches. Highlights of the season were double victories over Godwin, Forest Hills Northern, Hudsonville Unity, and Calvin Christian. 113 VARSITY SWIMMING Seniors C. Myaard C. Byle R. Feenstra S. DeWildt B. Kim as starting outfielder and Lewie as utility infielder. Kim led the team in batting with a . 356 average, made a new school record with 21 stolen bases, and also a season record of 22 walks. The rest of the team showed steady improvement in performance and attitude. Excelling as one of the finest athletes ever coached, Bob Rater- ink is also a scholar and a gentleman. The day I came I thought I was going to be treated as a stranger but everything was so different. Everybody seemed to know me and treated me so nice. I wish I could stay here more than six months to know everybody better and make more friends than I've ever had. It is nice I have still four months here to enjoy. But this time goes pretty fast and it will be suddenly the day I have to leave. I'll be very sad to leave this nice place where every- body treated me so good. But I'll try to return someday not very far away. I will like to thank all the teachers at school that helped me so much. Also thank all the Selvigs for treating me so nice and helping me, as well as the Patmoses and the Williams. Thank all of you for making these days one of the best of my life. I wish if anybody goes over to Peru, come to visit me. Sincerely yours Freddy Gomez Los Gladiolos 160 Unb. Aurora-Mirafl. ores Lima, Peru 140 Dear Friends: For a long time I wished to visit United States, but I never had an opportunity before. When I knew that this year I would come I was very happy because I like to travel, to know different people, and to have new experiences. I'm glad to make new friends to know more about the U.S. and stay with a family as nice as mine in Brazil. I'm pleased because all the people are so atten- tive with me. Thanks very, very much. I'll ne- ver forget my six months here and the wonderful time I had at Hudsonville with the VanAntwerp's and all my new friends. If anyone comes to Brazil one day, I'll be very happy if you visit my home. Silvio Iankelevich R.
