We hope that in some way they will bring back fond memories now and for the future to help make your H.H.S. days unforgettable. We sincerely hope you enjoy the highlights we tried to touch upon. We, the Senior class of 1972 have voted to dedicate this year’s Pioneer to someone who has done a great deal for our class. This person served as our class sponsor for the last three years, adding a lot of energy to our winning floats and helping with out banquet, besides being the advisor of Camera Club. All of this she did with a great deal of enthusiasm and spirit. Thank you. Mrs. Veenendall Cc i v SENIORS VALEDICTORIAN SALUTORIAN The Valedictorian for the Class of 1972 is Linda Poppema. She is very deserving of this honor, hav- ing maintained a perfect 4.00 average during her four years at H.H.S. Congratulations, Linda on a job well done! Eagle Football fortunes were very low this year as the Varsity fought hard but were unable to crack the win column, with an overall record of 0-7-1. The Eagles played the Blue Division champs Kellogsville in the opener and came away with a scoreless tie. The next outing against South Christian, the Eagles lost a close game 14 to 8 when the Sailors scored in the last minute of play. The largest crowd ever to see a football game in Hudsonville turned out five thousand strong to witness the spirited Eagles test the 1 rated North- view Wildcats. The score of 32-14 will be recorded but all who watched this game realized it was a much closer contest. The remaining games with Kenowa Hills, Wyoming Park, Zeeland, Rogers, and Jenison will be remembered as defeats for our football team, but the spirit of the 36 members of the Varsity team never weakened. The 7-1 record of the reserve football team was the best Hudsonville reserve record in at least 15 years. This enabled the team to share the championship with Kenowa Hills a 20-18 victor over Hudsonville. The caliber of the team is characterized best by their victory over a tough Rogers team. Trailing 12-0 at halftime, Hudsonville scored 2 touchdowns to take the lead only to have the kick-off returned for a touchdown by Rogers. Once again behind they moved the ball down and scored the winning touchdown with less than a minute to go in the game. This type of effort was typical of this group of young men. It takes a team effort to achieve such a record but the following players were singled out by their teammates for individual honors: MOST VALUABLE PLAYER- Kevin Gerkin MOST VALUABLE OFFENSIVE BACK- Rick Kooiker MOST VALUABLE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN- Kent Miller MOST VALUABLE DEFENSIVE BACK- Dan Paulucci MOST VALUABLE DEFENSIVE LINEMAN- Terry Dalman 102 FRESHMEN FOOTBALL FRONT ROW: R. S. golf team played its matches for the first time in the fall of the year instead of in the spring. This new idea in high school golf competition seemed to have several positive aspects in the '71 season. The weather was much better than in the spring, and although many times it was warm and sunny, the golf courses were not crowded at all. We played our home matches at Fair- way Estates Golf Course, which although a new course, is a very fine golf course. We received excellent cooperation from the course manage- ment and several enjoyable rounds of golf were played. Randy Roelors and Dale De Boer were the best, with Randy's average score the best at 44 per 9 holes. L. TO R. : J. Grysen, W. Hylarides, T. Syswerda, R. Roelofs, D. Russell, D. Elzinga, J. In this fall's competition they defeated Lee, Rockford, Wyoming, and Com- stock Park by a score of 5-0. Forest Hills presented a more difficult match but we squeezed out the win, 3-2. E. Grand Rapids was our only defeat. In labeling an athletic season a success or failure, many factors must be considered. The ability of our team and the ability of the opponets would be two primary factors, but these are very difficult to assess. One factor which is not difficult to assess is the ability of a team to give a 100% effort each game it plays. This method of evaluation is probably the most important of all because it is in this area that the real enjoyment of athletics exists. The chal- lenge of competition and the response to this challenge by high school athletes playing together as a team and doing their best. Thus the 1971-72 basketball season must be termed a success because of the efforts of fourteen young men who gave 100%. A total of six games were won but it seems the highest level of effort and achievement was attained in losing basketball games to some very good teams. The best example would be our final game of the season, a district tournament game with Hudsonville Unity. The entire season was exemplified by what took place in the final quarter of the game, when our team was behind by as many as ten points, but refused to give up, and although still behind by four points with six seconds left, rallied and sent the game into overtime. This effort had been shown throughout the season by this group of young athletes, who along with their fans can look back with pride on a season in which they did their best. The highlight of the season came when the little eagles upset the taller Calvin Christian cagers 65-63 at the close of the season. In this game the J. V.'s displayed the kind of basketball that will be expected of them on the varsity squad. Although the Eagles lacked great size, they made up for it with desire and determination. The J.V.'s played an ex- citing type of basketball utilizing the zone press and an aggressive man to man defense. Kent Miller won honors as the honorary captain for the year. Rick Kooiker received the award for most improved player and the most valuable player award was shared by Terry Dalman and Kevin Gerkin. 110 Freshmen Basketbal FRONT ROW: R. Bohl, R. Though it was a winless year, it was a year of growth and development. It was a year for gaining experience and knowledge for the future. The team was composed primarily of underclassmen with there being only three seniors on the entire squad. Next year we will compete in the O.K. White Division and with the valuable knowledge gained through long hard work this year, it would be wise for the rest of the league to watch out for the Eagles . 115 Boy’s Swimming Seniors Carl Berridge Bob Raterink Buddy VanderLaan Juniors Chris Byle Steve DeWildt Rich Feenstra Brian Keelean Chuck Meyaard Sophomores Don Childs Mike Lotterman Kent Spoolstra Rocky Stillwell Dave Tanis Freshmen Larry Baarman Steve Berridge Wayne Boonstra Dave Folkert Kelly Russell John Shupe Steve VanderLaan The 1971-72 swimming season was very challenging, and also very rewarding. The 1971-72 season brought the Eagle tankers their first win over the Godwin Wolverines, a long time rival, previously undefeated against the Eagles. The 1971-72 campaign established seven new school records out of the possible eleven events. The twenty-one member Eagle Swim Team swam to a dual meet record of five wins and six losses for the year, and qualified seven members of the team to compete in Class B State Swim Meet, in Lansing. TAKE US OUT TO The varsity baseball team compiled the best record since 1963 and came within one game of winning a championship. The team suffered a 2-1 loss in the final game of the season to finish in second place with a 10-4 league record and a total record of 13-7. New team records were set in home runs, stolen bases, and walks. An alert aggressive offense was largely responsible for many of the wins. The team record in stolen bases is indicative of the type of play of this team. Kim Elders with 20 and Lewie TenHave with 15 stolen bases helped lead the team to this record and to several close wins. Randy Vruggink and Gary Hessler led the team in hitting with Gary also leading in hits, runs batted in, and setting a season record in home runs. Defensively the team was led by Rick Geers with a fielding average of . 938 in the outfield and Gary Bosch, at first base, with a fielding average of . 989. Randy Vruggink led the pitchers in strike-outs and had an earned-run average of 1. 12 to go with his 6 wins against only 2 losses. FRONT ROW: L. Van Os, R. Vruggink, D. Nederveld, R. Geers, M. Kevin Schut and Dave Hessler were the leading hitters and pitchers while Craig Reister and Rick Kooiker were leading freshmen hitters. The record of the team was even more impressive considering the fact that Rick Geers and Lew TenHave, both sopho- mores, played with the varsity team all year. Living in the United States for six months is something I could never forget. Certainly this is the best experience I shall have in my whole life. Everything has been even better than I ex- pected. People have been so kind to me that the biggest amount of thanks I could gather would never be enough to express my gratitude. Here I have found a new family that fits perfectly in my feelings. The DeWeerds have given me an affection- ate and wonderful home. They have filled my heart completly. I am glad for 1 still have a long time to en- joy here. But time goes so fast! I know I shall despair when the time to start is next, because, although going back to my dear country might make me happy, I’ll feel I'm leaving here something I really love. The distance will seem too great as I'll be always willing to meet you again and let's hope I can come back some day or you can visit me at home. The Student Council consists of the above group of students. These students have worked reasonably well through- out the 1971-72 school year and have proved to make quite a successful school year. Dancing was finally allowed in Hudsonville Public High School and it was found to be a great success. The Council sets up assemblies for the students and looks for other ways to make school life better for them. The goal of the Student Council is to try to keep everything running smoothly to get involved with the students and faculty, and try to make things better for everyone. When one is happy he learns more than one who is mad and cannot see around his own nose. - President Willy. 140 he Sounds FIRST ROW: L. Curtis, M. Kuipers, D. Corcoran, B. Dykhouse, S. Williams, J.
