THE 1958 PIONEER Published by THE SENIOR CLASS of HUDSONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL HUDSONVILLE, MICHIGAN Dedicated to 2 Mr. Marvin Overway It is with deep appreciation that we, the class of 1958 and mem- bers of the annual staff, dedicate this volume to the one whom we feel is worthy of this honor. Through the past few years we have come to respect him highly. He has taken an interest in each of us individually and has sought to aid us in our personal problems and help us to decide which career to pursue. Many of us have enjoyed him for an instructor in chemistry and physics. Through this means we have come to know him better. We thank him for his kind understanding and hard work. We also are very grateful to him for his assistance in the capacity of Senior Class Sponsor. Even when our zeal was gone he encouraged us to press on and his enthusiasm was of great benefit to us. We cannot express our gratitude well enough for all you have done for us so we would like to dedicate this volume of the Pioneer to you, Mr. Overway. 3 In Appreciation We express our gratitude to Miss Mary Dahl for all that she has done to make our past few years a success. By her direction of our play and through the instruction we received in her classes, she has been an inspiration to each one of us and we appreciate the high standards which she has set before us. We also express our appreciation to Mr. Bauman for his interest in our class and for serving as our Senior Class sponsor. His encouragement and spirit has been an asset to us and he has done much to make our time enjoyable. To Miss New land goes our deep appreciation for her untiring efforts in helping us to prepare the Enchanted Forest Junior-Senior Banquet. We also appreciate her warm sportsmanlike attitude and her dependability. 4 BOARD OF EDUCATION Jake Tigelaar, Trustee; John Vander Molen, Trustee; Gilbert Hall, President; Herb Serum, Secretary; F. CLASS FLOWER: Rose CLASS COLORS: Black and Gold The Graduating class of 1958, a few years ago, was a class of babbling freshmen. Thrilled to be entering their first year of high school. Thrilled to be able to hear the bells ring between classes and to watch our great basketball team. As freshmen we had our moments of triumph and joy, but also of dispair. We were then sophomores. By this time we were feeling quite at home in our new role as high school students. We were calming down. Before we realized it the school year came to a close and our Junior year was beginning. We presented a successful play Strictly Formal.” Then it came time to make plans for the Junior-Senior Banquet, which carried out the theme of an Enchanted Forest. In 1957 we entered the corridors of Hudsonville High School as Seniors. The memories of this year shall live on forever. As we pro- gressed through high school. We were beginning to realize that we did not know everything and we were just barely scratching the surface of knowledge. We wondered many times what the future held in store for us. It doesn't seem like a reality; a senior year, a few big events, senior play, the Junior-Senior Banquet, our trip to Washington D.C. and last our graduation. Let us say, it has been wonderful to look back on our High School career as being the best time of our life. 12 Co-Valedictorian Roger Miller will be remembered by the seniors and faculty as a student who possessed a high degree of conscientious perserverance. His academic record, as expressed by a grade-point average of 3.94 points out of a possible 4.00, reflects this characteristic. Roger has represented our class on the student council this year, being especially active in formulating the new student council constitution. He is planning to enter Hope College in the Fall, continuing his education towards a career in science. We congratulate him on his achievement in high school and wish him continued success as he journeys onward. Salutatorian Our salutatorian, Marcia Brandt, attained an average of 3.86 out of a possible 4.00 points to win this distinction. None of us who knew her well are surprised by this achievement, for we had marked her long ago as a person of high intelligence who found a high degree of success in everything she attempted. Her pleasing personality and boundless energy undoubtedly were responsible to a great extent for the financial success of this publication, for she was a co-business man- ager. She carries our best wishes for the future as she enters the business world after graduation. Co-Valedictorian Tom Warke, in attaining the co-valedictorianship of our class, climaxed a brilliant high school record with a 3.94 average out of a possible 4.00. He has been marked as a leader by his fellow students, most recently serving as our class president. As our annual goes to press, Tom has reached the finalist stage in both the National Merit and General Motors Scholarship Programs. This is a distinction re- served for 7300 of the nation's top seniors. We are proud of Tom and wish him continued success as he enters Kalamazoo College next Fall. 13 ROBERT ALWARD Bob Where there's a will, there's a way. Class Sponsors, Mr. Byle and Miss Frey. On September 7, 1955, we the members of the Class of '59 began our happy days at Hudsonville High. We were the usual green-horn freshman class, afraid of our own shadows and awed at the new pro- cedure of the school. After a freshman-sophomore mixer, sponsored by the Student Council, everyone was better acquainted and felt more at home. As our class officers we elected the following: President, Dave McDonald; Vice President, Dave Bolhuis; Secretary, Carol Folkert; Treasurer, Barbara Zienstra; Student Council Representatives, Dale Ensing and Sue Kramer. The next year as Sophomores, our class officers were: President, Phillip Nyhuis; Vice President, Dave Bolhuis; Secretary, Marcia Emelander; Treasurer, Barbara Zienstra; Student Council Representatives,Judy Brandt and Melvin Drew. Our project in the fall of that year was the selling of tickets to the Travelogue Series, sponsored by the Lion's Club. At the completion of this project, the boys threw a party for the girls. However, our big project was the Biology Trip. An enjoyable time was had by all who motored to Chicago and visited the Museum of Science and Industry, the Garfield Sanctuary and of Flowers, and lastly, Riverside Amusement Park. Now that we have begun our money-mad Junior year, we have successfully completed two profitable projects. A large crowd enjoyed the concert put on by the American Seating Company Chorus. Our Junior Play, A Midsummer Night's Scream, under the direction of Mr. Larry Byle, was also a success. We received many compliments on the Junior Senior Banquet which we gave the Senior Class of 58, and we are all looking forward to our Senior year. 38 K. Beek r I 24 B. Beek A A K. Baareman J. Beck P. The Freshman class this year is the largest Hudsonville has had yet and with a lot of ambitious people in our class we know our years at Hudsonville will be worthwhile years. We as Freshmen got acquainted by the Freshman Mixer sponsored by the Student Council and all had a very good time. We enjoyed working on our class float which was entered in the Homecoming parade. Our class officers were: President, Roger Abel; Vice President, Larry Boldt; Secretary, Pat Shuck; Treasurer, Sherry Vander Wal; Student Council, Jake Dirkse and Diane Jager. Under the capable leadership of our officers we have made our Freshman year a success and know that our remaining years will be equally as successful. We also thank our sponsors, Mr. Tompkins and Mr. Dejonge, for their assistance. 50 R. Abel P. Alberta M. Alflen J. Berghorst M. Blair P. Blair - SHY GUY k L. Allen R. Allen L. Barbara Dawson is the director and motivator” of a group of young people trying to raise money for a Youth Center by presenting a simple staged play. When a sudden rain storm breaks up there first rehearsal, they take refuge in a deserted theater on the estate of Norman Courtenay, an eccentric millionaire. The house inhabited by ghosts and the refusal of Mr. Courtenay to permit the use of his theater nearly keeps the show from going on. Barbara unmasked the villian who turns out to be a Russian Refugee and gets the permission from Mr. Courtenay to use the theater. A hilarious presentation of a portionof Shakespeares beloved comedy Pyramus and Thisby form the climax of the play. 64 SENIOR PLAY Dino The play which the Senior Class presented on April 24 and 25 is the story of a seventeen-year old boy named Dino Falcaro. Dino, a bitter delinquent, is rehabilitated by the tireless efforts of his parole officer and psychotherapist just as he is about to return to a life of crime. As the play opens, Dino is just returning to his home neighborhood after spending four years at the state reformatory for participating in a murder. He is brought by his parole officer. Mr. Mandel, to the office of Mr. Sheridan, a case worker in the James Street Settlement House. In the next few days Dino is treated with scorn by his parents and the other young people of the neighborhood. The only one whom Dino thinks he can trust is his younger brother, Tony. However, Dino visits Mr. Sheridan every afternoon and is invited to a dance at the settlement house. That same night, a gang of which Tony is a member asks Dino to lead them in a gas station burglary. Dino first attends the dance and meets Shirley Wallace. Shirley helps Dino realize that a law abiding life is better than one of crime. Dino decides not to go through with the crime and stops Tony. The next day Dino begins to co-operate with the case worker and asks Mr. Sheridan to help Tony also. 65 H.H.S. BAND 1st ROW: R. Austhof, G. Pribble, C. Hewitt, S. Huff, P. Hall, W. Twining, C. After the queen and her court were escorted from their floats and introduced to the spectators, Jane was crowned Queen of the 1957 Homecoming by last year’s queen, Lorraine Hopp. The evening was topped off by a 13-6 victory over Coopersville. 73 Ralph Rich Bill Jack Ron Vis 19 Byron Center 6 12 Comstock Park 13 13 Coopersville 6 6 Kelloggsville 13 0 Zeeland 16 19 Sparta 6 9 Rogers 6 0 Fremont 33 Gerrit Jiggs Varsity 1st ROW: J.
