The freshmen differed considerably from the rest of the students and with few exceptions most of them were standing by themselves, looking for someone to talk with, yet afraid to talk when spoken to. To eliminate this “lonesome feeling the student council sponsored a freshman-sophomore mixer as a welcome gesture. Now that the year '55 - '56 is over they have become a group well-established in the school, and next year they will return ready to take an important part in student life. 35 M. Aalberts M. The Eagles had their ups and downs in winning eight games and losing the same number. The team, however, benefited by having a starting Senior, Rolland Schut, who broke the Kc-New-Wa League record by scoring 440 points in sixteen games for an outstanding 28 point-per game average. Rolland was named center on the Grand Rapids Herald Ke- New-Wa All-Conference team and was also a member of The Detroit Free Press All-State Class C team. The Eagles won their first tournament game by de- feating Unity Christian, a strong town rival. The Eagles lost the second game to a strong and determined Hop- kins team by a two-point margin. Although our team of last year shared a championship, this year’s team was probably the best that Hudsonville has produced since the League was organized in 1952. Our star player, Harriet Keizer, also won League honors as high scorer with 131 points in 7 games for a game average of 18.7. We congratulate the team and their capable coach. Miss Newland. on the fine job they have done this year. 49 Kneeling: Coach Newland. Manager De Vries. Sitting: L. Beaudin, S. Luurtsema, E. Mohr, J. Van Dyke, C. Nagelkirk. H. Keizer, J. It is a large team built around veterans Rolland Schut and Roger Bytwork, pole vaulters; Ron Brandt, a 440 man; Jim Mohr and Gale Newell, Hurdlers; Bob Wind, shot putter and dashman; and Ed Wondergem, a miler. The rest of the boys will provide many points in the team’s five dual meets and will form a nucleus for next year’s squad. 52 Row Three: H. Zeutenhorst. D. Katerink. G. Visser, D. Hall. S. Venema, T. Coach Roy Gerkin has only two returning lettermen from last year’s second-place club. Around these men. shortstop Norman Schut and first baseman Wendell Borrink. Coach Gerkin is building a young, eager squad; Using determination rather than experience. Coach Gerkin and his boys hope to go through their stiff ten-game schedule with another of the fine records which have characterized Hudsonville baseball teams in the past.
