MUSIC PAGE Our music program gotoff to a slow start this year. We lost our last years music instructor, Mr. Hagen, to Harisburg High School. The school board had not been able to procure another by the time school had started last fall. Our Commercial teacher Mr. Davidson, kept our music department together. He directed band practice two or three times each week and on the alternate days he- held mixed chorus and boys and girls glee club practice, In October the school board procured a senior from the Univer- sity of South Dakota music department to teach band and start be- giners to fill in the vscancies in the band. He was Mr, Charles Roberts from Faulkton, South Dakota. Mr. Roberts came to Hudson on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. He gave individual lessons to be. ginncrs all through the day and held a full band practice once a day. Mr.Davidson bft us and Mr. Roberts then took charge of full music program. Mr. Roberts then began to get ready for the music contest. He was a pioneer with the boys glee club as it had been many years since boys glee club had been organized and taken to the contest. He had a large group of beginners in the band and it did not sound well when the contest music was brought out. After several weeks of practice however, the band sounded very well considering the large number of beginners. The mixed chorus and girls glee clubs were both groups of considerable experience. There were two small groups that were taken to the contest. These were the mixed ensemble and the girls ensemble. The mixed ensemble consisted of Marian Paulson, Alice Vipond, Carol Larson, Darly Anderson, Gerald Krause, Frank Myers, Roger Evanson and Darrell Fowler. The girls ensemble consisted of Darly Anderson, Carol Larson, Marian Paulson, Lois Paulson, Charlotte Hagen, Alice Vipond, Doris Fowles and JoAnn Krauses These groups both received seconds at the music contest. These are the soloists who went to the contest and their rat- ings. Baritone Solo Frank Myers 2, Baritone Solo-Gerald Krause-1, Contralto Solo-JoAnn Krause-3, Baritone Horn-Frank Myers-l, Mezzo Saprane-Lois Paulson-2, Cornet solo-Craig Lee-2, Trombone Solo- Riehard Ferris-2, Saprano Solo-Jean Crowther-3, Tuba-Royce Miller -l-, Bass Solo-Roger Evanson-2. The ratings of the large groups are as follows: Boys Glee Club-l- Girls Glee Club-2- Mixed Chorus-2- Band-2-. Considering the difficulties we encountered during the year it was general thought the department did very well in the music contest. New that we have a very good music instructor who will will be able to help the students in many ways,we are expecting greet things of our music department in the future.
