This yearbook is a record of the good times which we have enjoyed, yet it could never begin to in- clude all our memories of the 1961-62 school year at Hudson High. The staH has worked diligently in order to give you a new and diferent yearbook in a short period of time. We hope that you will enjoy it, and we wish you, the underclassmen, much luck and happiness in the future. 2 3 DEDICATIO It is with pnde that we dedicate the 1962 issue of the LOG to Mrs. Betty Campbell. Mrs. Campbell is a veteran of twenty years of teach- ing here at Hudson High, and is head of the mathe- matics department. A graduate of Akron University, she has a Master of Arts Degree in Education from Western Reserve University. She is active in national, state, and area teachers, organizations and is an avid sportswoman. She enjoys any sport in which she can participate. We hope that she will continue to supply Hudson's math students with top caliber instruction for many more years. 4 fr Q, ., .f I 1 s Q g la . FGREKHJEXCHANGE STUDE T At Hudson High School this year we have had the great privilege and experi- ence of having Christiane Braun as a foreign exchange student from Hamburg, Gennany. Her enthusiasm, vivacity, and charm have contributed much to our in- ternational understanding. When she re- turns to Helene-Lange Schule High School to finish up her last two years of education, we know that she will be missed greatly. Her wide range of activi- ties and interests include swimming, ten- nis, dancing, music, photography, paint- ing, languages, politics, people, and many more. Here at Hudson she has actively par- ticipated in the Student Council, Choir, Y-Teens, Pep Club, and Drama Club. We are very proud to have her as a friend and student and know that she will have many successful years, which will include studying languages, travel, and marriage. n ADMINISTRATIQN , L, i SUPERINTENDENT To the Student Body and Log Staff: This is the year of men in orbit around the earth, the Berlin crisis, super bombs and fall-out shelters, and a world that is almost completely unpredictable. We of the present adult generation can hardly point with pride to the world we are passing along to you. I hope you will find many of the answers in human relations that have escaped us. I want to tell you how much I admire your poise and confidence in the future. You have gone ahead with your studies in the same spirit as Abraham Lin- coln when he said, I will study and get ready and the opportunity will come. Congratulations on your efforts in producing a splendid 1962 LOG. In future years, may it remind Hudson students of the year of building a larger high school and a greater opportunity to prepare themselves for the challenges of the new generation. Sincerely, flkivdl.. On the second Thursday of each month, you can Hnd the Hudson Board of Education hard at work in the high school library trying to make our good schools even betterf' The search goes on for ways to keep improving the quality of instruction. With an enrollment two and a half times greater than ten years ago, the Board of BO Education has been busy planning for new buildings both at Evamere and Hudson High School. New teachers, textbooks, and educational supplies have to be pro- GF vided. A special effort has been made to hire more teachers so that more written work could be assigned in English and all major subjects. EDUCATION First Row: Eugene D. Whiteg Mrs. Ada C. Miller, Presidentg Miss Gladys Parsons, Clerk. Second Row: Charles D. Miller, James F. Handg Harry D. Bubb, absent. PRINCIPAL Seniors of 1962: Early in the school year, mention was made of the line example set by our senior class. As the year comes to a close, it is quite easy to see evidence of the many accomplishments of this class--excellent scholarship, sound and positive leadership, active participation in many activities, and above all the spirit of enthu- siasm that the class of 1962 possesses for the future. Opportunities for the future could be no greater. Today our people graduating from high school have the advantage of being a part of a great advanced training program. You are the foundation upon which this pro- gram is building. Your ability to stand firm and not disintegrate will lead you to further advancements in your life time. As you leave high school to enter your chosen A fields of work or further schooling, it is my sincere hope that each of you will continue to carry on in the excellent manner that you have demonstrated during your secondary school years. In her absence Mr. David E. Milliss taught for a year at Hudson. She taught at Burwood Girls' High School near Sydney, Broken Hill High School in the country, and at suburban Tweed River High School. She not only instructed classes in art, but also filled in as a substitute teacher in physical education and ancient history. During her vacation she visited other parts of the country including the Great Barrier Reef and Canberra. We are sure that she gained much valuable knowledge of the country and at the same time represented our country well. Here she is pictured with a Koala bear in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. 13 STAFF Melissa Hathaway Secretary to the Superinlendent Anne Parmelee Nurse Donna Statts Secretary to the Principal Audrey Stewart Prudence Carlsen Cafeteria Worker Catherine Thomas Cafeteria Worker Cafeteria Manager W 1 4 SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS-Earl Hartz, Al Statts, Foremang Dwight Ellett, Delbert Stew- art, Robert Thomas, Wm. UNDERCLASSMEN The junior class operated the concession stand in the cafeteria as a major source of income to finance their activities during this and the coming year. In the fall they sponsored the annual Pigskin Prom as well as several after-game dances. During the spring, the juniors were hosts to the seniors and the faculty for the annual Junior- Senior Prom. They closed their activities for the year when they presented each senior with a red rose during the graduation ceremony in June. We, the sixty-five members of the 1962 LOG Staff, have worked extra hard this year to give you a yearbook of the best quality. There have been many areas to cover, everything from taking sub- scriptions to the actual planning of the LOG. We hope that we have succeeded in producing a yearbook that you, the students of Hud- son High, will thoroughly enjoy. Staff 60 . ,., E fm. 52: 2 ---, Aw , -'ff gl f PQ? fi? W. This was their most permanent accom- plishment. They also performed the regular coun- cil functions: the magazine drive Ctop- ping all previous totalsjg supervision of individual picturesg Back-to-School, Fun- vs.-Vandalism, and Flunk-and-Forget-It dancesg Homecoming festivitiesg the Tur- key Day raceg the Christmas Sharing projectg noon moviesg student electionsg foreign exchange supportg and the moni- tor system. The purposes and goals of the group are personal growth, growth in friendship, and religious and spiritual growth. The Hudson chapter also seeks to help build a better com- munity and school. In order to fulfill these purposes, the Hudson Y-Teens donated gifts to orphan children, and presented a gift to the school. Other Y-Teen activities this year in- cluded planned monthly meetings, weekly cabinet meetings, basketball and volleyball, sponsorship of the Christmas Formal, participation in the Thanksgiv- ing and Christmas assemblies, the annual Mother and Daughter program, and co- operation in the Akron Area Spring Formal. 01d Members Y-TEE Old Members Cabinet The objectives of Key Club Interna- tional are the building of home, school, and community, service to the nation forces and God, and combating the which tend to undermine these institu- tions. Being a strictly non-proiit organi- zation, all proceeds of its projects are donatedsto charity. As part of a great service organiza- tion the Hudson Chapter of Key Club International assisted in painting the Stu- dent Lounge, planted trees with the Garden Club, donated canned foods for the Student Council Christmas project, and provided patrolmen for the home football games. The Key Club also had four dinner and five recreational meetings during the past school year. 65 ' Tom Watts, Presidentg John Pol- ovick, Secretaryg Hal Kummerow Treasurer, Ned Luce, Vice President. This year students inter- ested in gaining a little more experience in outside art work formed an art club. They gave their time and effort to improve the caliber of their work. The club met every Fri- day at 3:15 and Sunday at 2:30 either outside for sketching or in the art room for special projects. M e m b e r s experienced more valuable forms of art as well as producing more qualitative work. RT CLUB Ron Fenn, Treasurerg Dick Tomlinson, Secretaryg John Pol- ovick, President, Stan Caniglia, Vice President. SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club was formed to give an opportunity to work on group or in- dividual projects. Members presented lectures and demonstrations at the after- school meetings. The club took several field trips to laboratories and other places of interest and occasionally industrial scientists gave demonstrations or lectures to the club. FT Members of the Future Teachers of America at Hudson High this year, as in past years, substituted for regular teachers when it was necessary for the teachers to be absent from school. The purpose of the group is to provide first-hand teaching experi- ence for those who are interested in a teaching career. Members must maintain a B average. They teach at both the elementary schools and the high school. TEACHER ' SSISTAN 67 I I VISUAL AIDES LIBRARY AIDES OFFICE ASSISTANTS HALL MONITORS CAFETERIA ASSISTANTS DRAMA CLUB The Hudson High School Drama Club, this year under the direction of Mr. Richard Fawcett, was much more active than it has been in past years. In addition to presenting The Diary of Anne Frank last fall and an original musical in collaboration with the band and choir, they held several business meetings and planned several program meetings in the spring. All work on club productions was done by club mem- bers. Some of the club's eighty members attended a drama clinic at Kent State University on February 3, where they attended lectures and demonstrations on make-up, acting, publicity, etc., and saw a short play. They also attended a play given in the spring by Kent State students. Scenes from The Diary of Anne Frank First Row' Maril n Peaki' Sue Martindale Carol n Row' John Polovickf, Don Saunders?
