ettiord aASmen rqani zations introductio n 2 But we’re all leaving soon, And going our own way. May all life’s pleasures Pass your way too. We wish you good luck In all that you do. Farwell now, my friends. And please may you find. Some thoughts of us Always in your mind 5 £)edicati on The 1978 yearbook staff would like to dedicate this book to Mr. Douglas Ferman. Mr. Ferman has devoted many years to this school system and we would like to honor him for those many years. Mr. Ferman graduated from Adrian College in 1949 with a Bachelor’s degree in teaching. In 1955 he received his Master’s from Wayne State University. He spent three years at Caro High School, Caro, Michigan, and six years at Trona High School, Trona, California, teaching and coaching. Mr. Ferman came to Hudson in 1959. He served as junior high and senior high school principal for one and three years respectively. In 1963 he was hired to serve as Superintendent of Hudson Area Schools. Mr. Ferman has spent the past fifteen years improving the high standards of the Hudson school system. Many times he has not received the recognition he has deserved for initiating programs and seeing that they have run smoothly. With this small token we wish to extend our appreciation to you, Mr. Ferman, for all of your hard work and dedication to this school system. Thank you. 1978 Yearbook Staff. The secret files! After many years of hard work and determination our high school days are over. Our graduation day came with clear skies and a nice breeze blowing. There had been days though when things hadn’t been quite so clear. We all have had a hard time with some things many times during our school days. There were a lot of ups and downs, but it looks like we made it. We tried our best as freshmen but we never made it to the top. As sophomores we kept right in there and with a little help we were growing up. As juniors we were almost there, we were in the top half. We only needed to hang in there one more year. It seemed like we would never make it, but finally as seniors we were the leaders of the school. Through our four years there were many changes in teachers and administration. We lived through them all and hopefully are the better for it. 16 Advisor Dale Storrer JANAEE AMES 9 Golf 3; Follies 4; Vo-tech 3; Co-op 4. With just one year to go the Junior class showed the rest of the school how great they were by claiming first place in the float competition for Homecoming. What made our float so outstanding was the fact that Mr. Evenson had so much equipment and a wife who liked to work. Our beautiful moveable tiger was so realistic that it moved right into the back of the van when it was announced that he had won first place. Miss Sally Enerson and Miss Pam Romain represented our class. They were escorted by Chris Sanborn and Rick Milligan. The Junior class also excelled in the annual magazine sale. They fell short of breaking the record for selling the most, but they are on record for selling the second most. The Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet were the last two events and proved to be a big success. Class Officers, top to bottom: Vice-President. Chris Class of 80 Caywood, Treasurer Sara Blanks. We were very proud to have these fine people represent our class on homecoming night. Ordering class rings, and taking drivers-ed was our excitement for the year. The class rings all turned out looking very nice. We all want our driver’s license, but is drivers-ed really worth it?! But after it’s all over, we’ll look back and think it really wasn’t that bad! We are now able to release that information. “A Star is Born. It had a large stork carrying a baby tiger, with the theme song “Evergreen” being played by the band. The follies led a spirit train at noon. This was highlighted by a speech given by Elmer Marry while dancing on a study hall table. During the assembly the drama club presented a skit based on “Happy Days.” Stu- dent council chose movies as the theme for Homecoming. Each class designed their own float. The Junior’s winning float was “Roller Coaster” followed in second place by the Sophomores with “The Greatest. Third place went to the Seniors for “Rocky” and the Freshmen float was “A Star Is Born.” Each of the classes was well represented in the Homecoming court. Our Homecoming Queen was Paula Pelham escorted by Dave Merriam. Homecoming was made complete with a victory over Manchester 14-0. “Jammer” performed at the dance after the game. Jammer” Emmy Jann. Barb wanted to be a sea captain. On May 1, 1978, fifteen trig students and five adults started off on a memorable trip to Chicago. We started from the school at six o’clock Monday morning in a van, a suburban, and a car. We kept right in stride with the senior ways and kept the boys separate from the girls. The girls rode in the car, while the boys took over the van and the suburban. The first real exciting event was the doughnut frenzy, when the boys attacked the girls’ car and tried to get more doughnuts. Then there was the time Itch and Grape started tearing up the van and how about when Marsha ran her head into the pool wall. She still won the race though! Grape had sticky fingers that night when we had pizza and some how walked out with the pan. The night we spent at the hotel was a long, dangerous one. Melissa. Marsha, and Bradene lived in constant fear and with good reason. While they hid in the bathroom, their room was hit hard with TP and shaving cream by an unknown group of guys. The adults were the only ones to get a good night’s sleep that night with everyone else staying up until 2:00 watching Kathreen and Company and Silver Streak. The real reason we went and the best time had was at the museums. There were many interesting things to see and do, and it was really great to have the chance to go. Whitcy was always on the phone! BYE BYE BIRDIE was the all-school play this year. It was presented April 20,21, and 22 to very enthusiastic crowds. The cast of characters was well chosen and everything was all together. Who could forget Albert’s (Jim Wilson) trials and tribulations, Rosie’s (Paula Brown) unrequited love for Albert, Kim (Karen Vickery) and Hugo’s (Rich Decker) rockey courtship because of Kim’s ‘‘Last Kiss’ to Conrad Birdie (Dave Bellfy) ? Speaking of Conrad, how can we ever forget Conrad’s fight with the pop can, his face smeared with lipstick, or the feed-back from the microphone? All in all the cast of characters made it through three great nights of entertainment, only proving once again that Mrs. Sheely and Mr. Rickard can do more than teach. 60 Even Mama swoons over Conrad. The boredom of noon was broken again this year when the intramural season started. This year there were both basketball and volleyball intramurals. Basketball started in January with five teams participating. These include: Teachers, Bagleys, Lakers, Drunks, and Sixers. The Teachers ended up in the number one spot in regular season play. They also grabbed the tournament title by beating Bagleys in an exciting final game. As spring came so did the end of basketball and the beginning of volleyball. Many students participated in volleyball. There were two divisions this year. The Teachers were the first place team in the orange division and Bagleys were number one in the black division. Other teams were U. of T. Brownies, Drunks, Freshmen. Vets, Tokers, and S.S.S.T. Again it was the Teachers winning the tournament over Bagleys. Maybe these teams weren’t the most professional but they certainly put a little comedy into the noon hour. All of the teams would like to thank Mr. Hanlin for directing the Intramural program, Mr. Borton for setting up the equipment, and to all who helped referee. Southeastern Michigan Invitational Political Youth Convention was the name the delegates finally agreed upon. Some of the other issues discussed were decriminaliza- tion of marijuana, capital punishment, teaching birth control in the schools, legalization of laetrile. and reverse discrimination. For the first time in the history of the Convention, a Hudson delegate was elected to an office. Tournament action was also a big success for the Tigers. A fifth place at the White Pigeon Christmas Invitational was a start for the young wrestlers. A fourth place at the Union City Invitational was a step up the ladder for the Tigers as they gained more experience. Also a second place finish at Blissfield brought home a trophy and added more pride to the Tiger team. And the biggest tournament victory was the first place finish at the very tough Napoleon Invitational. The LCAA league tournament, which was hosted by Hudson this year, was a struggle right down to the last two minutes. However, the Tigers placed second behind an excellent Addison Panther team. But the Tigers did have three league champions: Jim Akinson at 98 lbs., Elmer Marry at 138 lbs., and Pat Wollet at 155 lbs. The Tigers placed third behind the powerful Dundee and Pontiac Catholic at the districts. The Tigers that placed in the top four were: Jim Atkinson at 98 lbs. - 2nd; Dave Merriam at 132 lbs. - 2nd; Elmer Marry at 138 lbs. - 1st; Pat Wollet at 155 lbs. - 3rd; Dan Rowley at 178 lbs. - 4th; and Mark Duncan Hwt. - 4th. The regional competition was excellent and though they wrestled hard only one wrestler finished high enough to qualify for state final competition. Pat Wollet at 155 lbs. finished 3rd. Pat wrestled three times winning one and losing two. but he gained a great deal of experience at the state tournament level. 88 Front Row L-R: Randy Daugherty. Harold Moses. Randy Chilcote. At the Sports Banquet Mark Kingsley and Randy Chilcote were named most valuable players. Steve Guest was the most improved, and Harold Moses had the most splinters. The Tigers looked tough and held the Aggies scoreless. As they went into the seventh inning the score was tied 0-0. Jim Atkinson stepped up to bat and hit a single and then stole second. As Jimmy stood on second base, the rain began to come down. The game would have to be finished at a later date. The team traveled to Blissfield next. After much tough playing they dropped to the Royals in the eighth inning. The Tigers then made their way back to Sand Creek to finish the first game and to challenge the Aggies to another game. Jimmy went back to second and Peter Shaffer hit him in to make the score 1-0. Due to a fine defense the Tigers held the Aggies scoreless and won their second game of the year. The team went on to defeat Sand Creek in the next game, also. The season ended with Matt Shaffer and Brian Gilpin receiving the MVP award, Chris Bade the Most Improved, and Steve Morse, Mr. Hustle. Under the direction of President Hazel Marry, V. President Gilbert Blanks, Secretary Michelle Shaffer, and Treasurer Mark Monahan the Student Council provided many services and activities for the student body. This year’s Homecoming theme was “Movies”. The Junior class won the float competition with “Rollercoaster” and Paula Pelham was crowned Homecoming Queen. An auction was held one noon to get rid of old items collected around school and lost and found junk from the office. Some students paid good money for really dumb things. Sponge week was a huge success again this year. The students really look forward to Farmer’s Day, Occupation’s Day and The 50’s. Assemblies sponsored by Student Council were: a former professional player. Bill Glass; The Sound Image Edition; and a speaker who thrilled us all with his reptiles. The 1977-78 Yearbook Staff put a lot of hard work into the book in hopes that the memories captured here will forever remind you of great moments in your high school years. We worked very hard this year to get the yearbook done on time so the books could be handed out at the first football game. Each student took some pictures which was a new experience for many. Most of the pictures were pretty good, when we remembered to take off the lens cap or turn on the electric eye. Write-ups were another problem. Why is it that any other time you can think of many things to write, but when it’s time to make a deadline your mind goes blank. The class started as an experiment. As you can see from the book, th e experiment was a success. 121 ona i jj. onor Tapping-in Ceremony First row L to R: C. Allshouse. S. Kope. K. Stoyk. M. Gregg. B. Gerkin. A. Ashley. B. Barry. S. We must leave now this snug harbor and embark for a strange new shore. We must leave that which is familiar, and sail toward that which is new. So powerlessly we watch and wait as our harbor fades slowly from veiw. Straining, we try to recapture, the moments which are slipping away. But the progress of the ship is steady only memories are left to us today. We should not linger at the stem, for we must hurry to the bow. Only there may we hope to catch a glimpse, of the life which beckons us now. What will this new life mean for us? What events does it secretly hold?
