HUDSON AREA HIGH SCHOOL Hudson, MI 1976 INTRODUCTION Let us travel through this book of history, Let us declare our moments of independence. Search for those times of never-ending agony, Search for yet the glory and triumph that followed. Climb then into your ship of travels and sail to a horizon of dreams, 2 Climb then to the mountain peak that allows you to stand tall among men. Think back how you had cried through the endless nights, Think back how you seemed to find a rainbow after the storm. Remember your moments of fearlessness, Remember your need for a friend. Forget not how pioneers struggled for survival, Forget not your battles for victory. Let us not overlook the laughter, Let us not under estimate the talented. Search for the flag of your independence, Search for your final goal. Climb then with moving time, Climb then with high hopes. 4 Remember you’re only human, Remember you’re one among many. Forget not then, of your school dreams, and Forget not of the future. DEDICATION The 1975-76 yearbook staff is very proud to have dedicated its book to Coach Saylor, his assistants, and the record setting 1975 football team. The glory and honor which our school, community, and its citizens achieved will never be forgotten. The many years months, days, and hours which were spent in developing such an enviable position was fully completed by their setting the record! What took place in this small rural community between August and November 22,1975, w ill never be equalled by any other high school in America. We w ill always remember the film crew from New York, CBS and numerous other television stations. Sports Illustrated, and many newspapers, the New York Times included. In September of 1976 the movie about the Tigers and the town will be shown nationwide. The yearbook staff thus feels it’s ap- propriate to dedicate its book to the record setting 1975 football team. We will be forever thankful for the many lasting memories which the fall of 1975 brought all of us in Hudson Area High School! Coaches Saylor, Curran, and Kberhard. Coach Hartley. We put on the Homecoming dance and hosted the LCAA Student Coun- cil dance. We also brought in some very good and interesting assemblies, sold malts at noon, and invested in a few fund raising pro- jects. The first project was buttons. Rever- end Secrist donated his time and efforts, giving all the button profits he made to the Student Council, but when Student Council took over, sales dropped. We also purchased iron-on-transfers which didn’t sell too well, although someday these investments will bring in Student Council money. The Student Council participated in the Muscular Dystrophy Drive and established an “Almost Anything Goes Week.” Ellen Cole had one busy term in office and Jackie Wollett had a difficult time writing down all the events of the action packed meetings. The hardest office this year was Treasurer, because Rodney had to keep breaking the news that we were losing money. All in all the Student Council did all they could for the Student Body which was greatly appre- ciated. Officers: Rodney Terrill-Treas.. Karen Marry-Vice Pres.. Ellen Cole- Pres.. INTRAMURALS Volleyball The boys on the intramural teams this year did a fine job of mak- ing the noons exciting. Volleyball was played first with six teams battling for the title. The Junkyard Dogs came out on top by winn- ing the regular season championship and taking the tournament title. The other teams were: Digger’s Crew, Faculty, Huff and Co., Striders, and McCarty’s Followers. Basketball always seems to be the funnest of the two sports and this year was no exception. The Junkyard Dogs and Digger's Crew- battled for the championship during the regular season with the Dogs winning but not without a fight for the Crew!! The tournament was very surprising with the Striders pulling off a major upset by beating the Dogs and the Crew!! All the players would like to thank Mr. Cotter for directing the program and thank Mr. Curran and Wong for reffing! It's mine! Basketball Now what do we do? Jump high. This play was derived from Dicken’s Classic Novel, A Christmas Carol. The main character Mr. Scrooge (Jeremy Shinn) was particularly spiteful to his accountant. Hob Crachet (Gilbert Blanks) and his wife (Kelly Bowman). Scrooge was haunted by three spirits and of course his long lost partner, Jacob Marley (Arnold Sleutelberg). The play finally ended with Mr. Scrooge beaming from ear to ear, embracing the Cratchet children (Rick Millegan, Paula Brown, Lynette Bishop, and Ruth Shaykin). Who could forget that pan-cake flipper, Phil Potter, the three sexy southern belles, the sex hungry doctors, Klinger, the Koreans, and all the nurses. Bringing up the rear was the great Hudson Tiger himself. Later that night the parade through town was held. There were floats, bands, and pretty girls. Half-time was filled with the strains of great music of the Tiger Marching Band and the procession of the Queen’s Court and Class Floats. The Class of “76” again won first place, with the freshmen com- ing in second. From three senior candidates, Mary Austin, Ellen Cole and Deb Hart, Ellen was crowned queen. Cassie Swailes, Sara Blanks, Tina Schutte, Melissa Gregg, Ann Webster, Julie McNair ‘‘Coming of age” could best describe the Tiger golf team. But. being young and deter- mined to win the league, they fought extra hard to finish the season 15-6 overall and 9-3 in the league. The expected ups and downs of a young team were apparent in the early season. Only an unexpected upset to Grass Lake and a disasterous round against Onsted stood between Hudson and a league championship. Second place was in order for the Tigers, despite the League Meet, shooting a fine 333. The 12 man squad was headed by senior Mike Zimmerman and juniors Terry Chil- cote and Jim Curtis, who received great sup- port from a fine group of sophomores and “freshies”. The list is headed by sophomores Kirk Bailey, Carey Swanson, Mark Duncan, Rich Decker, Randy Braun, and Rick Mc- Neil; Freshmen Rick Milligan, Rusty Braun, and Scott Gilpin. The regional tournament escaped Hudson again as 3 strokes kept Hudson from quali- fying for the state tournament. Four golfers were named to the All-league team. Kirk Bailey was named to the first team, while Carey Swanson, Mark Duncan, and Mike Zimmerman made the second team. GOLF i «Illi .«I ',I Coach Prange « %«• w •iliiiilSS-i The True Side of Golf!!! They finished 4th behind state finalists Addison, Grass Lake, and Manchester in the LCAA. Rick Gutierrez finished 13th and qualified for the state finals for the second year. The Harriers were 6th out of 19 in the regional at Trenton. Ed Petkus and Rick Gutierrez received their four year awards. Phil Potter received his three year award, and Brian VandeZande his second. 66 COUNTRY GIRLS VARSITY This years Girls Varsity Basketball Team put forth a fine effort, finishing second in the L.C.C.A., with a fine record of 9-5. All five losses were squeakers, dropping them by a total of five points. The girls lost in the closing minutes of the District Tournaments by dropping another close game to Clinton, 38-35. Seniors who have played their last game are: Marj Ames, Becky Barnhart, Vicki Duncan, An- gie Hackett, Brenda Moore, and Deb Shaw. Three of the girls were named to the L.C.A.A. All League Team. Steve Brownfield was the leading rusher and Gilbert Blanks was the top scorer. Dave Bellfy led the tenacious Tiger de- fense with 115 solo tackles and 3 fumble recoveries. Travis Cramer intercepted 3 passes, returning two for touchdowns. He also blocked two punts, returning one for a T.D. Before the season started, a blow was struck to Mark Bade when he suffered a shoulder separation. Tim Higgens, a freshman, stepped in and did a very commendable job thus earning the first “Man of the Hour” award. The “Most Improved award was shared by Dan Rowley, a defensive lineman, and Pieter Marshall, an offensive lineman. The “Most Valuable Player” award was earned by center Mark Monahan. Mark was second in tackles, intercepted 2 passes, returning one for a T.D., and recovered one fumble. His leadership on and off the field exemplified the fine team spirit of the '75 Hud- son Junior Varsity. Dave Bellfy and Mark Monahan were the co-captains. The team was coached by Ray Schmidt, Dave Rickard, and John Redding. J.V. GIRLS It takes only five to start the game, but oh what a long bench! The girls had a decent season for a team with a lot of young, first year players. Once they got their attitudes together, they came out with a record of seven wins and six losses. Tempers flared, tears were shed, smelling salts were used and some liked cold showers. All in all it was a season one would not forget too easily. This year’s team tri-captains were Chris Daugherty, junior; Wendy Warner, sophomore; and Connie Marry, freshman. On Saturday, November 22, 1975, in front of 7,000 screaming fans the mighty Tigers were finally beaten by the Ishpeming Hematites 38-22 after years of endless victories and much success. The loss came in the fianls of the first state playoff ever. The Tigers outscored their oppon- ents 315 to 114. The men doing most of that scoring were: Greg Gutierrez, Mark Luma, Terry Carr, Terry Camp, and Marcus Kelley. The reason those people could score was the offensive line which was led by: Paul Stoyk, Dale Miller. John Miler, Keith Milli- man, Bob Hackett, John Barrett, and Mike Hackett. I)an Salamin was an excellent running quarterback, who switched to split end when Chris Lu- ma came in to pass. They both com- bined for 11 completions for 217 yards, an average of 197 yards per catch. The Tiger defense was just as awe- some when led by Digger Monahan, who led 118 tackles for the year. The other linebackers were Steve Austin, Mark Luma, Charles Belfy, and soph- omore Elmer Marry. The front four consisted mainly of Bill Parks, Bob Hackett, John Barrett, and Scott Kingsley. The defensive secondary was led by hard hitting Whack Deck- er, Wong Mullaly, and Dan Salamin, who set a new scool record with 8 in- terceptions. Steve Austin led in the fumble recoveries with three. Marcus Kelley had the only punt return for a touchdown, which came against Grass Lake. John Barrett had an av- erage of 36.8 yards per punt. Steve Austin averaged 45.6 yards per kick- off. Greg Gutierrez was the leading rusher with an average of 6.1 yards per carry. The team elected Mark Luma and Paul Stoyk as co-captains. The M.V.P. award was given to the team! Receiv- ing post season honors were: All- State; Dan Salamin, Chris Monahan, Greg Gutierrez, and Mark Luma, Jackson Area Gridiron 44; Dan Sala- min and John Miler, All-County; Paul Stoyk, John Miler, Greg Gutier- rez, Digger Monahan, Dan Salamin, and Honorable mention went to John Barrett, W'hack Decker, and Mark Luma, All LCAA; Keith Milliman, Scott Kingsley, Chris Monahan, Tim Decker, John Miler, Paul Stoyk, Mike Hackett, Greg Gutierrez, Dan Sala- min, and John Barrett and honorable mention; Mark Luma, Keith Milli- man, and Terry Carr. The Tigers increased their state record to 72 games and set the nation- al record at 72. The team was led by Tom “Coach of the Year Saylor, Ray Currna, Phil Eberhard, and rook-, ie John Hartley. The national record was set on November 15th 1975, in Grand Rapids against Kalamazoo Hackett in the semifinals of the state playoffs. Then, unfortunately, exact- ly one week later the Tigers fell to Ishpeming, 38-22. 1975 is surely a year to remember!! BASKETBALL The junior varsity basketball team shared the same success that their varsity brothers did this year, while en route to a fine 18-2 season. The little Tigers showed great team balance while winning the LCAA title. Five players scored over 100 points and took down over 100 rebounds on the year. Highlights of the season included defeating two J.V. powerhouses in Clinton and North Adams. Our J.V.’s handed Clinton their first loss ever on their home court. The Tigers ended the season with a fourteen game winning streak. Only one Hudson J.V. team has ever w on more games than this year’s club. This was truly a grrrreat season for Coach Fberhard’s Tigers. VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1975-76 Varsity Basketball team had an out- standing year. The mighty Tigers finished with a 20-4 record. The Tigers picked up the schools first LCAA championship in 12 years with an 11-1 league mark. In March the team won a District title by beating Napo- leon in the District finals. The season came to a bitter end on March 10 in the Regionals at Jackson Parkside by losing to Stockbridge 66-64 in 2 overtimes. With- out three fine young men the season might have been a sad story, but with Garr. Luma, and Salamin leading the way the Tigers were very successful. Replacing this terrific trio w ill be a tough job for first year coach Ray Reynolds. Two other seniors who helped out were Mike Hackett and Tim Duff. Seven juniors who all can shoot and score will provide Reynolds with a good nucleus to build from. The juniors are John Barrett. Bob Hack- ett, Ron Byers, Terry (’amp. Matt Butts, Bill Mullaly, and Chris Luma. Post season recognition went to Mark Luma: second team LCAA, first team all county, and honorable mention all state. Steve Garr: second team LCAA, and second team all county. Dan Salamin was second team all LCAA, and honorable mention all coun- ty. Bill Mullaly and Bob Hackett received honorable mention all LCAA. Rick Milligan, Doug Earl. Lloyd Applegate, Tony Hackett. Jeff Moses, Coach Prange. The ’75-’76 freshman basketballers completed a very exciting season with an 8-6 record. They won 6 out of their last 7 ball games. Of their 6 losses, 5 were by a total of 13 points. These 10 young men may have appeared small on the outside, but inside they w’ere as big as they come. Being outsized, the “Freshies” relied on team- work, quickness, and all-out effort. They hit a season high of 88 points against Manchester in the 10th game of the year. As any good basketball team, these guys showed remarkable improvement throughout the season. Tony Hackett and Lloyd Applegate led the team in scoring and rebounding, while Tim Higgins dished-out the most assists. Tony averaged 15 points and 16 rebounds, Lloyd 18 points and 16 re- bounds, while Tim had 75 assists for the season. But it took all ten team members to make it a very enjoyable season. JV VOLLEYBALL The JV’s record of 3-8 was not really indicative of the spirit that all of the girls put forth. Wins came against Onsted (2) and Grass Lake (1). They lost to Clinton (1), Addison (1), Bliss- field (2), Pittsford (2), Morenci (1). and Manchester (1). The JV’s improved tremendously as the season went along. Those leading the JV team were Connie Marry with the most spikes, Lynn Mullaly with bumping and setting, Marcia Baker with setting and Janette Jones with serving. 79 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL The Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team put out a great effort all year long but always seemed to fall a few points short. Their record was 4-8. The Varsity had wins against Fittsford (2), Manchester (1), and Grass Lake (1). They lost to Clinton (1), Onsted (2), Morenci (1), Blissfield (2), and Addison (1). Pat Roney and Annette Shelle led the team in points, spikes, and bumps. Deb Hart made the most unusual point all year as she used her head to re- turn a ball for a point against Morenci. Probably the best game of the year was against Morenci in the playoffs for the district tournament. The second game went right down to the final seconds before Morenci took that needed two point lead to win the game, and ended the season for a scrappy Tiger team. HI WRESTLING Varsity Wrestling Junior Varsity Wrestling 82 Those weeks of Hard Work- The 1975-76 Tiger wrestling team post- ed another great season. The team’s dual meet record was a fine 10 wins and 3 losses at the hands of schools who did very well in competition throughout the season. The season highlight was winning the L.C.A.A. championship for the second consecutive year. The team pulled a first in school history by placing all twelve wrestlers in the top 1 in the league tour- nament. Taking first places were Brad McCaskey, Steve Biship. Steve Austin, and Joe Austin. Placing second were El- mer Marry, Dave Hawkins, and Tim Shaw. Third places were taken by Phil Potter. Keith Duncan, and Gret Gutierrez. Carl Paid off And determination— Stoyk and Jim Gutierrez both placed fourth. This year’s team did not have a great deal of experience going for them, seven of the starting regulars were in the Var- sity uniform for the first time. Many of them will return to next year’s team with more experience behind them. Lack of ex- perience is the major reason the team did poorly in the State District. Steve Austin, the one wrestler who had the best chance of faring well in the state tournament missed most of the second half of the sea- son with a torn knee cartilage, that re- quired an operation at the season’s end. Steve was also chosen by his teammates as their outstanding wrestler for the sec- ond year in a row. In the opinion of his coach, Steve is the finest and most com- lete wrestler to come out of Hudson High School. Again, congratulations to the 1975-76 Hudson Tiger Wrestling Team. “No one ever said it would be easy!” 83 J.V. BASEBALL VARSITY BASEBALL Standing: Mark Bade, Bill Mullaly, Tim Kuhn. Kandy Braun. Terry Chilcote. Kirk Baily, David Bellfy, Assist. Mr. Lawrence, Coach Mr. Cotter. Sitting: Carey Swanson. Steve Kerr. Mike Zimmerman. Mark Monahan. Dale McFaul, Tim Decker, George Atkinson. Chris Monahan. Bad luck was the problem with the Tiger Varsity this year. The Tigers lost 3 extra inning affairs and lost several others after leading in the early stages of those games. The final record was 6-14 overall and a 4-8 record to finish 5th in the LCAA. The season highlight came against Grass Lake when we won 2-1 in 8 innings after some weird happenings occurred. The team had only 11 members and two coaches, Greg Cotter and Phil Lawrence. There were several outstanding individuals who helped the team con- siderably. Tim Decker (Whack) was MVP, tied for team lead in doubles, and 3rd best hitting percentage. Bill Mullaly (Wong) was honorable mention all LCAA catcher, team leader in at bats, triples, hits, runs scored, stolen bases and tied with Whack for doubles. Kirk Baily was the team’s best pitcher with a 4-4 record, he was all LCAA second team infielder. Mark Duncan had a fine season and was a 2nd team all LCAA pitcher. Steve Kerr started hot with a bat but cooled off. Even though his average dropped off Steve played great ball all spring. Randy Braun was our RBI leader with 15 and he tied for homers with 1. Mark Monahan tied with Randy for homers and was second in runs scored. Carey Swanson did a good job at second base and he broke up a no-hitter against Morenci with the team’s only hit which saved much em- barrassment. Whitey Bellfy did a remarkable job at first base and led the team with a .306 batting average. George Atkinson was a great reserve who kept the team alive with his jokes. Mark Bade contributed to the team with his hustle and desire. With 10 of 11 players back the fans should look for big things next spring. 86 The game is going well? BOYS TRACK Hudson trackmen posted a 4-2 record in the L.C.A.A. for a 4th place finish in a tough league struggle this year. Their overall record was 6-6. Although our re- cord was not impressive in the win loss column, we can point with great pride to the development of a fine team attitude that led to the breaking of 8 school re- cords during the 1976 campaign. The record breakers for 1976 were: Rick McCormick: 100 yd. dash 10.15 Terry Camp: 440 yd. dash 52.0 Kevin Duncan: 120 yd. Harv. VARSITY SOFTBALL The Varsity Girls’ Softball team had a very successful sea- son with a record of 8-4 and second place in the league. They made it to the finals of the district but were then defeated by a good Onsted team. They had previously beaten Clinton 6-2, and Manchester 16-15 to make it to the final game. Leading the team was Lynn Mullaly, with the most at bats, runs, dou- bles, triples, and home runs. Jane Rupp had the most hits, singles, RBI’s, and stolen bases. Annette Shelle also had the most hits. Becky Barnhart had the most assists, while Deb Shaw had the most put outs. The best batting average was held by Deb Hart. Connie Marry had the most walks and w as “Miss Hustle” on the team this year. The JV’s record was 2-1-1. They did not have many games but they did have a lot of fun and gained much experience under Coaches Becker and Badders. 90 Kneeling, Left to Right: Lynn Mullaly. Denise Parks. Hazel Marry. At first Sue Woodford we were kind °f scared, but soon we became Jenny Wotring the rowdiest class. We participated in many Beverly Young things. Our first Homecoming was a good ex- oung perjence Cassie Swailes and Julie McNair were the freshmen representatives. Our float was a success considering not many people showed up at Mr. Cotter’s to work on it. In spite of our inexperience in float making, we won second prize. At Christmas time we decor- ated the back hall. It looked great until some uppetclassmen tore it down. We were repre- sented in the National Honor Society Rock-a- thon by four girls who made it through 24 hours. Our only real failure came when we were co-sponsors of a dance with the sopho- mores. All in all our freshman year was a really rewarding experience. 99 100 SOPHOMORES Tim Adams Patti Allen Roxanne Allen Cherie Allshouse Janaee Ames Karen Ames Suzanne Anderson Brad Atkin Cindy Atkinson Mark Bade Ron Bagley Kirk Bailey Marsha Baker Mary Barnes Cathy Beal Clenneth Bell David Bellfy Ann Belote Kathy Benjamin Janice Blair Gilbert Blanks Terri Bohlke David Borck Linda Borton Andy Brighton Randy Braun Patsy Brown Joel Burcroff Diane Burns Ed Byers Charles Campbell Rick Carr Earl Conklin Robert Court Barbara Cramer Mary Cross SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: Left to right: Advisor-Miss Livingston, Sec.- Michelle Shaffer, Pres.-Debbie Moore, V. Deb Moore and Paula Pelham were our Queens Court representatives with their escorts Earl Con- klin and Mark Monahan. We really got it together when we won the Christmas Hall decorating contest, but then came back in our usual way and lost the money when we didn’t get our sleigh out in time. But, our magazine sale was a smashing success, coming close to the high school record. We also had a dance featuring Rampant and almost made money on it. We decorated the Study Hall this year for Christmas, with stars, bells, and other decora tions. Unfortunately our marvelous decorations went unrewarded. Five Juniors participated in the Rock-a- Thon for Muscular Dystrophy. Now we have one more year in high school and it’s sure to be a good one. At times we thought we’d never make it. Most of us did. As freshmen we often wondered if we knew where we were going. All we could see was the diploma at the end of our senior year. There was more to it than that. Our last year was filled with memories of the na- tional championship. Losing the first game in ages. The 200th birthday of the nation. The thought of vot- ing in a presidential election. Each event impressed upon us the sense of respon- sibility that one little paper offers. “Do you know where you’re going to?” I)o you like what life is showing you? Where are you going to, do you know?” Simple words, but challenging. Why do we sing them? “My interest is in the future-because I'm going to spend the rest of my life there.” The yellow rose, representing hope, promise, and love, assures us of the brightness of tomorrow if we but look for it! A lot of time and effort were used to put this together and we thank everyone that helped. We would like to express special thanks to Tom Goodrich, Powell Studios, Mike Siegfried, Lynn Mullaly, Tom Fow- ler, Dave Sheely, Mr. Potter and the Post- Gazette, and the Hillsdale Daily News for assistance with pictures.
