Throughout your 24 year teaching career you have kept many hands and minds busy searching their untapped potential for knowledge. Your patience and understanding has been most helpful in direct- ing our efforts to become useful, productive citizens. Therefore, it gives us a great amount of satisfaction to dedicate this book to you and wish you a most successful and rewarding retirement. Your dedica- tion and determination to help young people will be remembered for years to come. The 1974-75 yearbook. The 1975 yearbook staff would like to give their thanks to Mr. Duncan, Mr. Keller, and Mrs. Good- rich for the hours they devoted to the 1975 year- book. Through their efforts we are able to bring this book to you. Their willingness to help provid- ed us with the added incentive necessary to put together a story of one year of your lives. Their constant support has given us the ability to pro- duce a yearbook full of memories of the past and dreams of the future. And so, to these three people, we say “Thanks. You’ve been great!” 10 School Board Members: Mr. Shaffer, Mr. Bowman, Mr. Opsal, President Hart, Mr. Leffingwell, Mr. Decker, Mr. Freeborn. Superintendent: Mr. Ferman Pictured at right are Vice Principal Mr. Keller and Principal Mr. Duncan. We owe them a lot for all they have done for the school and for the students. 12 Here we see the counselors and secretaries hard at work. The counselors, Mrs. Storrerand Mr. Reynolds, have do- nated many hours to the students and have given us much aid and support. The secretaries, Mrs. Riley and Mrs. Donaldson, can always be found ready to help. They have also put forth a great deal of effort toward the school in all aspects. 13 14 16 Upper Left: Paul Palpant Upper Right: Lucille Myers Lower Left: Walt Keller Lower Right: Joyce Kelley 17 19 20 21 Custodian - Mr. Lieska COOKS: L. to R. - Mrs. Kaiser - Head Cook, Mrs. Sprague, Mrs. Camp, Mrs. Curtis, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Stutz. It all started weeks ahead of time when we had to think up ideas for floats to go with that crazy theme. But, every- thing was ready by the appointed day. That “day” got started off when the drama class spoofed the Homecoming complete with Elvis Parsley; The Follies’ skit raised the dead, and the cheerleaders danced nifty fifties’ style. Then we all gath- ered down town on that clear crisp night to see a parade full of colorful floats, smiling girls, and marching bands. Halftime in the game against Manchester finally came. The sophomores’ float “Tiger Twist” twisted to first place, and the seniors got second place for the third time. Then, to the strains of “Sweet Caroline”, Miss Denise Moore was crowned Homecoming Queen. It was a Homecoming to dream about. 25 Right to Left: Cindy Atkinson, Elmer Marry, Judy Webster, Matt Butts, Peggy Cisco, Brad Barrett, Cindy Berkshire, Mark Hinkle, Queen Denise Moore, Cliff Middleton, Debbie McCaskey, Gene Town- send, Deb Hart, Steve Garr, Sandy Weatherwax, Chas Belfy, Michelle Shaffer, and David Belfy. r a m u v a 30 Once more the monotony of noon hour was broken by the intramurals. It all started off with basketball. There were six teams this year: The High Rollers, Clayton Rough Riders, Bo’s Bombers, Easy Widers, DJ’s, and The Bud Company. These six teams battled each other for first place. But, the competition ended in a match between the Easy Widers and the Clayton Rough Riders. Once the dust had settled, the Easy Widers came out vic- torious and won the play-offs. Of course, they not only played basket- ball but also fought, argued, and did a few other things. But, it was as much fun for the fans as it was for the players. This year the volleyball intramurals followed the basketball intramurals. There were a lot of people who partici- pated for a grand total of seven teams. They were The High Rollers, Spikers, Carr’s Team, Higgin’s Team, McNeil’s Team, Faculty, and Bo's Bombers. These teams helped to make noon hour a little more exciting. Both intramurals deserve credit for giving us more memories to dream of. I didn’t mean it! Shazaam!!! WHERE’S THE BALL?!?! 31 ll 0 0 I p 32 Tryouts are the worst part of the play, except of course for the actual performance. We all showed up hopeful of get- ting even just a walk-on part. Then, horror of horrors, we found out “TheTruth About Cinderella” was a musical. We had to SING! Slowly, one by one, we read and then sang, some good and some bad. Finally, tryouts were over, and the long wait began to see who got which parts. It was only four days, but it felt like four months. Finally the wait was over, and the list was posted. Now each of us dreamed of becoming a star. We do it my way or not at all. Play practice was a lot of fun, a lot of work and a lot of yelling. Especially when people forgot their books, their lines or lost their minds. Everything had to be perfect for opening night, especially this year with it being a month earlier. Then there were the times Mr. Rickard or Mrs. Sheely would say “NO BOOKS ALLOWED” so everyone had to hide their books behind their backs. Then we started practicing on stage with props. Of course, everything went wrong, but eventually everything was as ready as it could be-for opening night was almost here. This is him. I’d recognize that smell anywhere! I love your accent!? It’s opening night of “The Truth About Cinderella”. Tryouts are over, practice is over, and now the excit- ing night is here. Everyone hustling and bustling. Afraid that their cos- tumes will fall apart or they’ll forget their lines or lose their voice. But through three performances every- thing went great. The play was a success; mixed with a few sur- prises. 34 It only weighs 100 pounds. Final bows. 35 The FHA Tea This year many of the students partici- pated in trips or activities. For two weeks, a group of boys went to Florida, in April, some seniors from the Calculus and Physics classes went to Chicago for a weekend with Mr. Palpant and Mr. Fow- ler as chaperones. And then there was the FHA Convention at Western Michigan University which lasted three days. Another FHA activity was the FHA Tea held in May. This page has pictures from some of these trips and of some special activities. This was taken at the planetarium in In the hotel. What this is, we don't know. Chicago. 37 Assemblies at Hudson High have always been a unique experience with .... Karen Jenkins showed us what she was really like. The players brought us to laughter and to tears with their farewells. Charles Basnette tried to teach Coach Saylor to sing. A Smokey Santa. Coach Curran and Coach Saylor presented the jocks . . . Coach Becker presented the “bra-burners”. 39 Polly became a mad scientist. I 0 n This year, thirty-seven students from Hudson participated in the Lenawee Mock Political Convention held at Adrian College. Janet Frees and Tab Lemons were Hudson’s chair- people. Among all the bickering and yelling between the small schools and the big schools, we drew up our rules, made resolu- tions, campaigned, and elected our state of- ficials. We even were addressed by Repre- sentative Mowatt. It all began at 8:30 A.M. Monday, November 5, and lasted until 11:00 P.M. Of course, we didn’t mind the long, hard hours. After all, it was an experience we will long remember. 40 This year’s foreign exchange stu- dents were: Ximena Lopez from Equedor, Enrique Caro from Ar- gentina, Jose Cunha from Brazil and Claudia DeCastro from Brazil. They stayed with Cole's, Moran’s, Janik’s, and Lange’s respectively. Everyone enjoyed the exchange students while they were in school with us, even though we couldn’t understand their secret little talks in Spanish. Claudia and Ximena had Miss Wollen wondering in Typing I what their jokes were really about! We will hate to see them leave, but we hope they have enjoyed them- selves while they were here! 0 Sponge Week was made up of three exciting days: Little Kids’ Day, Farmers’ Day, and Back- wards Day. Even though not very many kids dressed up, the ones that did went all the way . . . Once a kid-always a kid?!? 42 The Junior-Senior Banquet has become a tradition at Hudson High where the Juniors show the Seniors their apprecia- tion. Greg Gutierrez, President of the Junior Class, was MC for the evening. Pat Kane and Debbie Hart began by giv- ing carnation corsages to the Top Ten. The meal was then served by some of the Sophomore girls. After dinner, Arnold Sleutelberg and Cindy Jacobs put on a humerous skit which was entitled, “Who’s on First, What’s on Second, and I Don’t Know’s on Third.” The Banquet ended after the Junior Class Officers read what the Juniors will miss about the Seniors. Dig in, girls! Cindy and Arnold were part of the entertainment. 44 The exchange students were also present for the delicious food and good entertainment. The Sophomores served the meal. A dance followed the banquet. Deb Hart also took part in the program. Many students have talents in different areas of study which would otherwise go unnoticed. The abilities may be found in shop, home economics, art, and many other areas. One student had the ability to construct a clock. Many students posess the talents needed for constructii Some students have the talent to make things out of plastic Another shop student displayed clock-making abilities. The month of October found the choir members selling Christmas decorated candles to raise money for uniforms. Through the efforts of everyone, about $800 was raised for the above purchase. The month of December found the small Trou- bador group singing for civic groups in the community The Christmas Concert was a huge success with the Concert Choir performing The Christmas Story by Roy Ringwald with soloists Karen Beagle, Lori Miller, Deb Spohr, and James Dennis. The Middle School Singers and Concert Choir performed the traditional Hallelujah Chorus by G.F. Handel. In May the Choir went to the First Annual Lenawee County Choral Directors Association Concert at Adrian High School. The 60 member choir sang two songs and then sang with the 400 member mass choir A full day of singing was tiring, but was enjoyed by all. In May. the Troubadors were again singing around the community. May 22 brought the Spring Concert. We should ali be proud of the Choir's accomplishments in the field of vocal music. The 1974-75 Student Council had a very good year with many activities. They sold Looney Fruits, were in- volved in the LCAA Student Coun- cil, and raised money for muscular dystrophy. One of the projects for muscular dystrophy was an ugly toes contest. This year, they also revised their constitution after much quibbling and arguing. All in all, the student council did an ex- cellent job for the school. 60 LCAA Representatives: Karen Marry, Michelle Shaffer, Tabb Lemons, Angie Hackett. senior Representatives: Brenda Hawkins and Lisa Secrist. They were 8-6 in league competition, good enough for 5th place in the league. For the second year in a row, the standings were decided at the league meet. The golfers shot a 361 at the regional for a 7th place finish. Greg (ace) Bailey became the first golfer in Hudson’s history to record a hole in one during competition. Greg hit a 4 iron on a 185 yard par 3 at Giant Oaks on his way to an 82 for the round. Along with Greg, Bob VanHemert and Ed Carr were the only senior golfers. Mike Zimmerman represented the Juniors. Terry Chilcote, Kirk Bailey, and Carry Swanson rounded out the varsity squad. For the first year there was a JV squad which ended up 2-3 for the year. Rich Decker, Rick and Randy Marks, Rick McNeil and Jim Curtis composed the squad. With 10 of the 12 golfers returning, we are looking for a promising future. 79 Phil Potter, Brian Vandezande, Bill Mullaly, Rick Gutierrez, Coach Reynolds, Chris Earles, Ed Petkus, Manager Mike Madell. The Tigers host- ed the second Hudson Booster Invitational”. 15 schools participated with the Tigers finish- ing 7th. The team placed 4th in the Regional at Hadlett. The team finished fifth in the LCAA meet (4th overall-Final Standings). Rick Gut- ierrez was Team Captain. Phil Potter was most improved runner. Mark Ferman received his 4th award for Cross Country. Nine fine opponents on nine thrill-packed Friday nights found the 1974 Hudson Tiger football team just as tough as always as the Tigers fashioned another perfect season as they scored 322 points to their opponents’ 49. Dan Bell- fy and Mark Luma led the Tigers with 64 points each. Greg Gutierrez had 54, Rich Cramer 28, Dan Salamin 26, Mike Hackett and Steve Austin 18, Terry Camp 14, Marc Kelley 12. Still another six players figured into the Tiger scoring machine. Statistics such as these point out the super team effort and team spirit that the squad possessed. It has never been a one man show at Hudson, and it cer- tainly was not in 1974. Defensively, 31 players made the tackle chart. Dan Bellfy with 79, Bill Deo 72, Chris Mona- han 67 and Brad Hart 58, led the long list. The top games were against Addison, Grass Lake, and Hillsdale. Six thousand people jam-packed Thompson Field to see the Tigers come back and overcome a 13 point deficit at the end of the first quarter of the Addison game and go on to win the game 26-21. At Grass Lake the game was not de- cided until the gun went off and smoke cleared, to find Mark Luma in the end zone with the ball. Once again, another thrilling victory, 14-8. Hillsdale High gave the Ti- gers all they wanted as the season ended in front of 4,000 fans. Again team pride and hard work payed off as the mighty Tigers out-lasted the determined Hornets, 16-14. Much credit for the team’s success must go to the fine leadership of the 14 seniors led by captains Bill Deo, Dan Bellfy, and Brad Hart, who played their final season. Guard Dennis Smoke, halfback Richard Cramer, defensive end Tom Gentry, tackle Dennis Rose, linebacker Rick Donaldson and end Mike Komarynski were the other seni- ors who started for the Tigers and will be missed next sea- son. Along with these fine men, the Tiger roster will lose these outstanding seniors: backs, Dave Curtis and Mark Goodlock; ends, Mike Meredith and Jeff Pelham; and tac- kle Leland Wolf. So another chapter of “A Trail of a Cham- pion” comes to a close and with it reads Keep it alive in 75”. 82 0 0 The Junior Varsity football team rolled over eight straight teams this year to give them their first perfect season since 1968. The Junior Tigers had a strong of- fense and outscored their foes 290 to 78. Matt Butts topped a well balanced scoring effort by the Junior Tigers with 60 points on ten touchdowns followed by Charles Bellfy with 52, Dave Salamin-44, Scott Kin- sley-38, Chris Luma-28, Mark Duncan-26, Bill Sey- moure-16, Gilbert Blanks-12, Dave Bellfy-10, and Brad McCaskey-6. Chris Luma had an extremely fine season from the signal-calling post as he completed 36 of 64 passes attempted for 800 yards and 17 touchdowns. Leading the ground game for the Tigers was Charles Bellfy who carried the ball 114 times for 806 yards and a 7.07 average. Dave Salamin was the number two ground gainer with 477 yards in 59 carries for an 8.08 average. Salamin also led the defensive effort with 84 tackles. He was followed by Dave Bellfy with 74, Charles Bellfy-72, Bill Seymoure-47, and George Atkin- son-46 to round out the top five tacklers. Dave Bellfy and Scott Kinsley each came up with three fumble re- coveries while Elmer Marry topped the team in pass in- terceptions with 2. Rocky Sheldon had 4 blocked punts to his credit while Leonard Beaubien got 2 more. The Junior Varsity team was coached this year by three fine coaches. They are: Assistant Coach Dave Rickard, Head Coach Ray Schmidt, and Assistant Coach John Redding. 84 Hudson HS Page 85 Hudson ludson Mich. The Varsity Basketball team had a very success- ful season, posting 13 victories and 8 defeats. The team Included one senior, seven juniors, and three sophomores, the youngest team In the LCAA. The “fighting tigers” were able to finish third behind Addison and Manchester. The Ti- gers had an explosive offense, featuring a rocket- like fast break but lacked the big man to pull off the rebounds, yet were only outrebounded in 5 games. The Tigers were led all year by their three juniors: Salamin, Luma, and Garr. The other starters, both sophomores, played above all ex- pectations. Bailey was the only senior on the team. He helped to win 4 or 5 games with his hustle and desire. Mike Hackett was our swing man who could play any position. Bob Hackett surprised us all with his Improvement. Members of the team were: Arden Frey, Dan Borck, Scott Kingsley, Terry Chilcote, Bob Hackett, Mark Duncan, Matt Butts, Ron Byers, Terry Camp, Rick Deisler and Chris Luma. The most thrilling highlight of the season came in a game at Adrian Madison as the Tigers prevailed, despite trailing by 12 points early in the fourth quarter. Their final record of 14-2 ranks in the top 4 in Freshman annals. This years squad shows the promise and potential to bring excitement to Tiger fans in the future. 87 a s This year girls’ basket- ball was led by our fearless captains Mary Barrett and Kim Sher- man. We had an excel- lent season with all wins and no losses except to a non-league Blissfield. We almost lost to our rival Moren- ci. We were behind be- fore the half but man- aged to get together by team work, and to win by one point. In the District tourna- ment, we won our first game against White- ford. The team members together won 60 medals in Tournaments, ten of the wrestlers won 20 or more matches, with Steve Austin and Bill Deo winning 32. There were six seniors in the starting line up, Ed Carr, Jeff Ireland, Rick Donaldson, Dan Bellfy, Bill Deo and Dennis Smoke. These young men carried the team into many exciting matches and memorable moments that they, their coach and fans will long remember. Remaining team members who deserve recognition are Freshman Dave Marriam, Sophomore Brad McCaskey, Juniors Rocky Sheldon, Steve Austin, Steve Bishop and Greg Gutierrez. Terrific effort out of these boys all season long, made Hudson known around the state as a fine wrestling town and brought a great deal of attention to themselves and their community. 91 Two school records were broken in the 1975 track season. Scott Kingsley broke the high jump record which was set by Jack Tomer in 1956. The new school record is now 5’11”. A new 440 Relay record of 46.8 was set by Kevin Duncan, Mike Siegfried, Terry Camp, and Rick McCormick at the League Meet. The old record was held by Steve Ames, Tom Fowler, Terry Camp, and Greg Gutierrez in 1974. Kevin Duncan placed 8th in the State Final track meet on May 31,1975. The Track Team Members of 1975 were: Gilbert Blanks, Terry Camp, Gary Chil- cote, Bill Deo, Kevin Duncan, Keith Duncan, Chris Earl, Jim Gutierrez, Rick Gutierrez, Bob Hackett, Terry Higgins, Scott Kingsley, Rick McCormick, a Dennis Meredith, Mike Meredith, Bill Mullaly, Perry Patton, Phil Potter, Bill Seymoure, Mike Siegfried, Perry Swailes, Brian Vande Zande, and Jerimi Shlnn' c Coach Peltier and Assistant Coach Webster. 93 M b 94 The girls’ varsity volleyball team completed their first season of competition with a 3-6 record. Wins came against Sand Creek (2) and Onsted (1), with losses against Addison, Mor- enci, Pittsford, and Blissfield. Although their record was not impressive the girls made a good showing against teams that had much ex- perience. The J.V. team, made up of all ninth grade girls, did a fine job against teams made up of upper class girls. They had wins over Sand Creek (2) and Pittsford (2). Their overall record was 4-5. Next year volleyball becomes a league sport for which points will be awarded toward the league trophy. Bottom: Judy Webster, Jill Eagle, Pat Roney, Jackie Wollet, Carrie Goodrich. The 1974-75 Girls’ Track Team had a very success- ful year considering the inexperience of the team. Also, the league was much tougher and more competitive compared to last year. Hudson had the smallest team in the league—but one of those with the largest spirit. A big accomplishment of the year was that this year’s track team set 10 new school records out of 13 track and field events. The overall dual meet record was 2 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. The Hudson Girls Track Team was placed 4th in LCAA. Hudi n HuAn-at f (3 0 D 0 0 f s «u iUM . Who says there is nothing strange about Freshmen? Remember our Freshmen year and our first days of high school when we thought we were so-o-o cool, but the upperclassmen reminded us we weren’t and they were. And what about our first dance with a real live band? But where were the freshman boys? Then came Homecoming and the Fabulous Freshmen Float”. It was pretty good considering only 5 people came to work on it and we had almost $25.00 in our treasury. Oh well, we got disqualified anyway. Remember the first time you skipped, the first time your study hall was grounded and your first trip to the tree? And what about those other firsts which weren’t supposed to be revealed to the whole school but somehow everyone knew? Oh! Being a freshman was fun, but we’re sure glad It’s over. Impeachment almost occurred as a result of the inability of our class president to appear at class meetings. The magazine sales were a success-we top- ped all magazine sales records ever set at Hudson. When scheduling time came, every junior worked feverously to make his schedule easy. After all, senior year is for partying down, not for homework. Re- member that, Mr. Curran! ill M2 Well, Seniors, we finally made it. Did you ever have any doubt? Together we have travelled through four years of trial and tribulation, and we still came up on top. Bits and pieces of high school seem to stick out in our minds. Remember our freshmen year when we won top prize for our Homecoming float? And how could we for- get our initiation by the sophomores. Next we were sophomores. The big event of that year was getting our class rings. We thought they would never come, and they almost didn’t. Finally, we were juniors, and we really had to act like it. We had to do things like sell magazines, write outlines for Mr. Malarney, put on the Junior-Senior banquet, and say good-bye to the class that had been our leaders for three years. There were a lot of sighs when we realized we had only one more year to go. Now we’re seniors, and everything seems to go by in a whirl: Homecoming queen Denise Moore, the grass- ers, 62 wins, Mr. Curran, taxes, skip day, concerts, par- ties, invitations, banquets, more parties, and finally graduation day itself. Now, when everything is over, all we have are our memories of yesterday and our dreams of the future. 1 14 Our fearless leader. Now what are we supposed to do? Treas. Tab Lemons Sec. As we sit here so patiently, Thoughts come of how this could be. After all our time together, We will be apart forever. We have no one to tell us now What time to do things and just how. We will do these on our own, And we will do them all alone. Our paths may never cross again, But we won’t forget how it’s been Remember all the good times we have shared To show each other how we cared. But, now the day is finally here. It’s time for all to give a cheer. So raise your glass up to the sky, It’s time for us to say good-bye. We will walk our paths silently, But each will have their memory. Each will remember what he's done, All of the sorrow, all of the fun. For now our day is finally here. And everyone has given his cheer. At the beginning of the year, we ex- citedly talked of expanding the yearbook by at least thirty pages. It was only through your loyal support that your dream became a reality. Thank you. The yearbook staff would also like to thank the following people for their help in our photography department: Mr. Sheely, Mr. Potter of the Post Gazette, Mike Siegfried, The Adrian Daily Telegram, and Hillsdale Daily News. Also, a specail thanks to Mrs. Riley and Mrs. Donaldson for putting up with our running in and out of the office on Tuesday nights. Once again, we, the yearbook staff members are greatly in- debted to Mr. Keller and Mr. Duncan for their valuable time and unlimited support in our work. It is with sadness that we extend this thank you. With this year’s end, their job as our advisors ends also. We will always remember the help and support they have given us. It is due only to them that the Hudsonian exists today. We chose this year’s theme “It was but yesterday we met in a dream” because we feel that this is an appropriate theme. What are our memories but dreams of yesterday? The year- book staff hopes that its goals have accomplished by im- mortalizing your dreams of yesterday. m WALSWORTH Marceline. Mo.. t'.S.A. .
