Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1974 volume:

HUDSON 2 Like the twilight in the road up ahead They don’t see just where we’re goin’ And all the secrets of the universe Whisper in our ears and all the years Will come and go. We may never pass this way again. Dreams ... so they say Are for the fools and they let them drift away. Peace . . . like the silent dove Should be flying but it's only just begun. Like Columbus in the olden days We must gather all our .courage Sail our ships out on the open sea Cast away our fears and all the years Will come and go And take us up . . . always up. We may never pass this way again. So come walk with me and try to REMEMBER WHEN . . . 5 To Mrs. Oyer: The staff of the 1973-74 yearbook is very pleased to dedicate this book to Mrs. Bertha Oyer. As you complete your 18th year with the Hudson Area School system and begin a new segment of your life, may it be a very rewarding one. You have been a big help to all the students during your years at Hudson. As you progressed through the teaching of General Math, English, Latin One, Latin Two, and into guidance, you have always willfully and cheerfully helped any one who desired help. Now, may the good Lord bestow upon you many rewarding years during your retirement. It is with reechoing congratu- lations that we present this 1973-74 yearbook to Mrs. Oyer. The 1973-74 Yearbook Staff 7 I LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Jack Shaffer. Mr. H. L. Bowman. Mr. Dick Opsal, Mr. Phil Hart. Mr. )ohn Decker. Mr. Arthur Freeborn. DiJ The Hudson Area Schools serves an area of approximately 76 square miles. There are two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school for the 1570 young people of the Hudson area. University of Michigan accreditation was acquired in 1893 and North Central Association accredition in 1914. All schools provide hot lunch services for the youngsters and 14 buses travel ap- proximately 126,000 miles a year to bring the students to school. 9 Mr. Douglas Ferman-Superintendent Coffee break again? If she had lived, she would have been a member of the graduating class of 1974. As a student she was involved in many activ- ities. The students who were fortunate to have known her will never forget her warm personality and cheerful smile as she walked down the halls of HHS. The senior class felt very unfortunate to lose Sue as a stu- dent in their Sophomore year. 21 Senior Activities?!? Remember when you finally became a senior? You never thought you’d make it, but you did. Your float still wasn’t a prize winner, but you came in first in spirit and determination. Remember Sherman and his Delta Dawn”, and the long days in government, when we had income tax and current events quizzes. Remember how the year went by so fast and how you felt when you finally 22 became the graduated class of 74”. Senior Class Officers: Denise Hepker. Treasurer; Pam Duncan. President; Dan Mullaly. Vice President; Sue Baxter. Secretary. Future government teachers? When you’re last, you try harder. DAVID ABLING Track 1,2, F.F.A. 1,2,3,4, F.F.A. Offi- cer 3,4, Chorus 2, Co-op 4, Vo-Tech 3. Champion for the 7th year in a row, Class “C” State Champion for the third year in a row, and establisher of the Michigan High School All Class Record of the most consecutive wins (53). You can say plenty, plenty about guts, desire, ability to play under pressure, ability to never give up, and the most important, the ability to play as a team. The 1973 Tigers started the season 37 strong, 15 returning lettermen among them. Their first encounter of the season held more pressure than any other game in the history of Michigan High School Football. Their task was to win the game that would break the states long- est consecutive record of wins. (44 held by the great Morenci teams of the late 40’s and 50’s). Just imagine, if you can, the pressure on the great young men prior to that game, the waiting, the sleepless nights, and the long hours of preparations that went into this his- torical game. It was an evening 37 young men will never forget, as was the entire season. From that 30-0 win of the Blissfield Royals to the 9th win of the year, a 22-0 defeat over a very powerfull Homer team. The seniors; Gary Miller, Brian Saliman, Wayne Guttierrez, Ron Guttierrez, Bill Kelley, Jim Harris, Don Hoover, Chuck Smith, Dan Mullaly, Steve Esterline, Park Atkinson, Rick Beagle, Pat Luma, Rick Sherman, and Steve Ames were the heart beat of the Tiger. It was, and must always be, the seniors who lead the team through the trying times by showing they are willing to pay the price no matter the cost. But they did it with just a little more at stake, just a little more pressure, and just a little more TEAMWORK. The underclassmen were super. Striving with every moral fiber of their bodies to keep in step with their hard nose highly experienced hard hitting co-captains, Steve Ames and Pat Luma. The Junior Varsity Football team had an outstanding 8 wins and one loss season record, while fielding the largest J.V. Squad in history. They also played the toughest schedule ever played by a Junior Varsity team. The little Tigers learned that EFFORT meant giving 100% and never quitting. The team had many outstanding players and will provide the Varsity with much depth in the years that follow. The Most Improved Player was Sophomore Keith Milliman who was outstanding line play on both offense and defense. Eight teams competed in it. The team placed 8th in the state regional and 4th in the LCAA meet. Blaine Baker was the team captain. Rick Gut- ierrez and Chris Earl were the most improved runners. The Varsity team had a very successful season. They made up for their lack of height with their determination and their desire to win. Their effort paid off, and the Varsity girls ended the season with the first place title. The J.V. squad also had a good season as they tied with Morenci for first place. This was the first year for the girls to play fall basketball, and the first year for girl round bailers to have a state tournament. Unluck- ily, Morenci was the first rival, and they defeated our girls 56-35. Because of in- juries, illness, and broken bones, there were only five weeks in which all twelve boys were able to practice together. The high point of the season was a thrilling overtime victory with North Adams who were eventual- ly Class D Quarterfinalists. There were also two big victories over arch rival Addison. Senior D. Mullaly led the team in scor- ing, assists, and steals while senior D. Hoover was the team leader in rebounds and the second leading scorer. The team finished third at the Blissfield Relays, and then ripped off” three straight LCAA victories over Morenci, Clinton, and Sand Creek. At the Tecumseh Relays the team finished 5th out of 10 Class C teams. Addison and Onsted then overpowered the Tigers in their last two league meets of the season. The team finished 4th in the league and qualified Senior Rick Beagle for the state final at Mt. Pleasant. The Tiger Track Team set four new records in the 1974 season. Dan Mullaly pitched and played centerfield. Dan was given honorable mention on the all league team as an outfielder. This season Dan had the best pitching record of all Tiger pitchers. He batted .341 for the year. A1 Roney, catcher, is currently batting .300. A1 has done a fine job this year cutting down runners attempting to steal second base. Greg Bailey, second baseman, was elected second team all league infielder. Greg batted .448 for the season, scored 22 runs, had 18 RBI's, had 22 stolen bases, and had 3 doubles. Lack of experience, knowledge and money shook the fibers of this book as we began the layout. It was only through pure determination and co-opera- tion that we kept it all together. And, as it turns out, we are very proud to present to you this year’s book. We, the yearbook staff, are greatly indebted to Mr. Robert Duncan and Mr. Walt Keller, for without their leadership there would have been no book. When everyone else had lost all con- fidence. they stood firmly behind us. Many valuable hours of their time were given up to staff work. So to Mr. Duncan and Mr. Keller, we give our deepest thanks. The yearbook staff would like to thank Mr. Potter of the Post Gazette and Mr. Sheely for their co-operation for our photography department. Also, a special thanks to all the coach- m WALSWORTH Marceline. Mo . I .S.A. i?
