At half-time the gala festivities came to a cli- max as the band played the famous nursery rhymes of the themes of the class floats and the winning float was announced. Excitement grew in everyone around as the crowd hushed to hear the announcement of the 1972 Home- coming Queen. To remind any failing memories: Theresa Shelle was crowned Homecoming Queen with her escort Rick Garr, and the Seniors had the winning float entitled Sing a Song of Sixpence . That year his team earned a 6- 0 record. In 1965, he moved to the JV team and in 1966 became Hudson Varsi- ty Head Football Coach. From the be- ginning, he has emphasized TEAMWORK. His first varsity team earned 5 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. In 1967 the Tigers claimed the first of six consecutive LC AA Championships with a record of 8-1. The 1968 season kept that record, and in 1969 the Tigers had their first unde- feated varsity football season and the first of three consecutive second place state rankings. Since then, they have remained undefeated. In 1972, the team remained undefeated, captured its' 6th LCAA Championship, and became 1972 State Champions. Coach Saylor has received several awards, but this years honor-Michigan Class C Coach of the Year - was the pinnacle. However, Mr. Saylor feels strongly that this honor is not only a personal one but a school and communi- ty honor, for none of it would have been possible had it not been for the remark- able TEAMWORK of all the players, coaches, cheerleaders, students, par- ents, and citizens over the past seven years. Coach Saylor thanks all of his past team members for their outstanding effort and the assistant coaches for their many hours of dedication. Coach Curran has 14 years, Coach Deline; 5 years, Coach Eberhard; 5 years, Coach Schmidt; 1 year, MnMalarney; 2 years, Mr. Tin- ney; 2 years, and Mr. Peltier; 5 years. Mr.'Saylor realizes that all honors and awards that have come to the Tigers have been won by the TEAM with its tremen- dous dedication and hard work. Assured that this valiant Tiger TEAMWORK will continue, he has set the following goals for 1973: to beat the state record of con- secutive wins, to retain our state title, and to bring home our seventh consecu- tive LCAA Championship. 27 ro 00 CLASS C STATE CHAMPIONS Front row: Coach Tom Saylor, Tom Mullaly, Mick Curtis, Charlie Meredith, Perry Cisco, Co-Captain Steve Hepker, Co-Captain Greg McCasky, Tom Edinger Brent Moore, Jim Wollet, Roger Webster, Coach Ray Curran Middle row: Coach John DeLine, Dan Bellfy, Pat Luma, Jeff Pelham, Jim Harris John Moyer ’ Greg Rozelle, Jerry Nickelsen, Chris Booth, Chuck Smith, Steve Esterline Back row: John Monahan, Chris Decker, Ed Austin, Rick Beagle Steve Ames Dan Mullaly, Dennis Rose, Bill Deo, Rick Sherman, Parke Atkinson, Bruce Vanderpool, Richard Cramer Standing L to R: Coach Reynolds, Wayne Gutier- rez, Jeff Belknap, John Enerson, Jim Goodrich, Bob Lange Kneeling L to R: Ed Austin, Rick Gutierrez, Ed Petkus, Mark Ferman, Blaine Baker Again this year Coach Reynolds was able to rely on the Three Musketeers: Lange. Enerson, and Austin, to set a pace for the rest of the team. From the looks of the rest of the team there should be several more success- ful seasons to follow. 29 Left; Bottom Left-Rocky Sheldon, Kevin Lordon, Steve Bishop, Steve Austin, Rick Donaldson, Middle Left-Rick Sherman, Steve Ames, Greg Gutierrez, Jim Harris, Top Left-Parke Atkinson, Jim Wollet, Greg McCaskey Below: Ed Austin, Bill Deo, Wayne Gutierrez, Pete Thomas, Coach Malarney This year was an exciting one for wrestling fans: and the Tiger Matmen did their best to keep the crowd on the edge of their seats. A team receives one point for every track meet it wins during the regular season. The L.C.A.A. track meet, which concludes the season, also helps determine the standings. A team receives five points for being first in the L.C.A.A. track meet, four points for being second, and so on. According to this sytem. Coach Dave Hinkle’s track men finished in a tie for fourth place with Clinton. The Tigers won two of the five regular league meets and finished fifth in the final meet. During the regular season, the Tigers soundly defeated Madison and Clinton; they tasted a defeat themselves at the hands of perennial track champs, Morenci. Larry Barrett was the most valuable track man and the high individual scorer for Dale Harris, Chet Hill, Lyle Hutchison. Alan White- sell. Brad Butts, John Meyer. 3rd Row: Mr. Hinkle, Larry Day. Barrett was three-fourths of an inch shy of a Hudson high jump mark. Lyle Hutchison was the second leading scorer. Lyle ran the 220-yard and 100- yards dashes, the 880 relay, and also pole valuted. Steve Malarney, who ran the low and high hurdles, was the third scorer. 440- yard dash men Gene Campbell, miler Bruce Lewis, and runner Roger Henning were other outstanding performers. This year’s track team, like other athletic teams this year, was a young one. Only three seniors were on this squad. The team has a large array of promising fresh- men. Boys like Bill Elliot, Jim Jacques, Larry Day, and Larry Clouse, will make the future Hudson track teams especially good ones. Baseball 1st Row, left to right: Perry Stuttz. Mac Gutierrez. Don Smith was the only senior on the team, but the Tigers still managed to finish third in the L.C.A.A. with a record of five wins and five losses. This marked Coach Kinney’s second year as the baseball coach. Tiger pitching chores were handled by Chuck Peltier, Jim Distler and Joe Salinas with Peltier picking up five victories. Jim Toole was an able receiver with some catch- ing help from Gordon Miller. Smith did a very creditable job at first base. Lyle Camron, Perry Stuttz and Phil Lawrence all handled the second base duties at differ- ent times. Mike Mitchell was the shortstop, while Dave Evenson continued his outstand- ing play at third base. Outfield duty was capably handled by Joe Serafin, Chuck Brown, Bill Davis and Mac Gutierrez. The Tigers best played game of the year was probably a 3 - 1 victory over Onsted. A high-light of the year was a ten inning 6-5 loss to Morenci. It marked the second straight year Morenci had defeated the Tigers in ten innings. Peltier was named the team’s Most Val- uable Player, even though only a sophomore. He earned the honor by getting five pitching victories, leading the team in batting with a .367 average, in hits with eighteen, in doubles with five, and in runs-batted-in with eleven. Evenson led the team in triples with three and in runs scored with twelve. Pel- tier, Smith and Serafin led in stolen bases with six each. With twenty members of the twenty-one man squad of Tigers returning next spring, a banner baseball season could be coming. forensic Zeam 1st Row: Claudia Dobbins. Lynne Freeborn. Kathleen Fish.
