MISSING: Jim Lemons-Trustee and Dick Opsal-Trustee. The Administration is made up of three sections, much like our Federal Government, the Superin- tendent's Office being the Executive Branch, the Board of Education being the Judicial Branch, and the Principal's Office being the Legislative Branch. The Board of Education is composed of seven non-salaried positions elected from members of the community. Their terms are usually for four years. The Board's meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of each month. The many problems and ideas to be discussed are coordinated by Mr. Fer- man. He is a key man although he is not a member of the Board himself. The Board, like the Judicial Branch, has the final decision on all matters. The Superintendent's office or Executive Branch, under the direction of Mr. Douglas Ferman, is in charge of the four schools in the Hudson Area School District. It's duties include; Employment of new teachers, purchasing and maintaining school equipment, and seeing that text books remain up- to-date. The Principals, like Senators, are representative from each building. They are responsible for keep- ing the Superintendent informed of the state of af- fairs on their respective buildings. These three sec- tions compose the administrative body of our school system. 6 Mr. Ferman and Mr. Swanson discuss the meeting's agenda. Superintendent's Office Mr. Ferman received his B.A. degree from Adrian College and his M.A. degree from Wayne Stale University. He has put in many years of dedicated work as Superintendent. This year something new has been added to our school system-an inter- school switchboard that controls the telephone calls. Mrs. Kinsey (LEFT) and Mrs. Shinaberry are secretaries to the Su- perintendent. Here, they are looking over the monthly reconciliation. 7 Principal's Office Mr. Duncan has been in our school system for the past three years. He received his B.A. de- gree at Hillsdale College and His M.A. at Michigan State. However he received his real education at Hudson High. Mr. Spagnoli does an impressive job at flipping pages. As Mr. Duncan's secretary, Mrs. Donaldson is kept busy all the time. MRS. ALLION Degrees: B.S. Adrian Col- lege Subjects: Home Economics I, Child Development, Jr. Hi. Home Economics MR. In Memoriam We at Hudson Area High School honor the mem- ory of Mrs. Ruth Weisenfelder who passed away on March 24,1969. Mrs. Weisenfelder was born Decem- ber 5,1905, in Archbold, Ohio. She received her B.A. degree from the University of Michigan. Joining the Hudson High School Staff in 1953, Mrs. Weisenfelder taught a variety of subjects and served as advisor for several clubs. She became yearbook advisor in 1962 and worked many hours striving to produce a better yearbook each year. Mrs. Weisenfelder will be re- membered by her students and fellow faculty mem- bers for many years. 19 Cooks and Dusters 20 The cooks were better than the food. Not you again Mr. Sheely! You probably thought that this fabulous yearbook would never be finished. Well, we the 1970 Yearbook Staff are proud to say, It's finished! . We have pulled hair, yelled, screamed, and other various forms of torture to pre- sent what we hope is a new and different type of yearbook for Hudson Area High School. Although some of us feel that we have lost a small portion of our sanity this past year, we feel it is really worth it and we hope that you will enjoy every part of this memorable book. There were ten spon- sors: M S, Metalloy Foundry, The Knights of Columbus, The Kiwanis, The American Legion, Ed Eagle, Homor Donaldson, Hudson State Savings Bank, and Thompson Bank. Boy's State was concerned with the structure of state, local, and county government, the responsibilities of a voting citizen, and the influences of party politics on the entire government system. The recreational facilities of the MSU campus were open to the Boy's State's use. Swimming, baseball, football, and basketball clinics were also provided for use. Future Homemakers of America The Future Homemakers were young ladies of the school who were interested in the role and responsibilities of the future house- wife. This group was very active this year and kept their advisor, Mrs. Zimmerman quite busy. At Thanksgiving the girls got out their Betty Crocker cookbooks and baked pumpkin pies. These were then sold to parents and teachers for a profit. During the Christmas season the organization had a sledding party and a taffy pull. They also made and donated Christmas decorations to the Thorn Hospital. Near the end of the school year four repre- sentatives were sent to Western Michigan University to participate in the state convention. The F.H.A. — F.F.A. banquet was held and well attended. The Fu- ture Homemakers also had a trip planned to Cedar Point during summer vacation. 28 F.F.A. The F.F.A. is an organi- zation designed to devel- op the fundamental prin- ciples of scientific farming in the school. Under the leadership of Harold Fox, the F.F.A. has expanded immensely. The corn and beans sown by these boys produced a high yield. Among the numerous educational trips taken by the F.F.A., was a venture to the Chicago Interna- tional Livestock Show. They will also be going to Cedar Point during sum- mer vacation. In the spring, to help finance activities, the F.F.A. sold seeds. To honor these fine young leaders of tomor- row, a banquet was held in April. FIRST ROW: Steve Potter, Perry Curtis, Harlod Fox, Dave McCullough, Mr. Godfrey, advisor. They were selected by the American Legion Auxil- iary and sponsored by various clubs in Hudson. The girls spent a week learn- ing how our city, county, and state governments are run. Each was as- signed to a certain city and county. Then city and state officials were elect- ed to serve for the week in the various offices. The girls listened to many speakers on todays world and its prob- lems. They greatly enjoyed and actively took part in the campaigns and elec- tions. The girls representing Hudson were: Claudia Hackett, Colleen Mere- dith, Nancy Middleton, and Linda Norris. Science Club The Science Club was one of the richest clubs in the school. It was under the professional leadership of Miss Miller. The Science Club investigated, observed and recorded the animal population in the school swamp. This was the beginning of a yearly project to develope a natural science lab. The club was more active this year than last year. They bought white mice. The purpose of their experimentation with these mice was study their heredi- tary traits. The club consequently was called the Mickey Mouse Club . In the spring work on the natural science lab was continued while the mice pop- ulation grew to fantastic dimensions. At the end of the year, the club donat- ed the mice to the school cooks to serve them as micesickles at lunch next year. The National Honor Society is an organization within our school that most people have heard of but few know anything about it. Students are chosen as members by the faculty. To receive this honor, an individual must be on the honor roll and maintain a high grade point average. The individual must dem- onstrate leadership and qualities of a responsible citizen. Pupils can become members during their sophomore, junior, or se- nior year. This year the N.H.S. was in charge of running the bookstore. They offered a variety of books including: fiction, classics, non- fiction, biographies, language dictionaries, and other refer- ence materials. A successful Book Fair was conducted just be- fore Christmas recess. Besides having the privilege of belonging to this society members were further honored by wearing a special stole over their gowns during graduation. Student Council The Student Council is the governing body of the school. There were sixteen with one representative from each and one alternate from each elected by the students. The presiding offi- cers were: President — Barb Ireland; Vice President — Cary Goodsell; Secretary — Cora Sanford; and Treasurer — Bill Evenson. Mr. Spagnoli proved to be a very qualified advisor. The Student Council is in charge of many student oriented programs. Topics and speakers for assemblies were: Paul Cauldwell and the Cauldwell singers, an assembly on drugs presented by Deputy Snyderm, a patriotism assembly, and an assembly on reptiles. The Council provided pencil and paper machines for student use along with a malt machine at noon hour. One of their con- tributions was to the YFU program this year. As the school year slowly passed, the Student Council trea- sury quickly diminished. Sweaters, sweatshirts, and T-shirts were sold, in an effort to raise non-existing funds. The biggest contribution of the Council was the acquiring and funding of all-weather letters for the front of the school. This was an attractive addition to the school grounds. 34 Ski Club This year the ski club had a new advisor, Mr. Tinney, as well as an overwhelming number of new, enthusiastic club members. Every Tuesday night one could encounter some brave soul trying to master the art of skiing, either for the first time or for competi- tion practice. Conditions this year were exceptional with many fine weeks of near-perfect weather in lower Michigan. The new chair- lift greatly added to the facilities available at Irish Hills Sports Park. Varsity Club is composed of boys who have earned their letter through partici- pation in any sport. Through the year they raise money to pay for their Tiger blazers. They sell programs at the different sports events. The New York Saturns vs. Faculty Game was sponsored by the varsity club. This year the boys reviewed and set up a new constitution for the organization. 35 Youth For Understanding We have all, at one time or another, dreamed of traveling to some far away place to see new and ex- citing things. Six of our seniors had this dream come true as they traveled to Europe and South America with the Youth For Understanding Program. After many hours of work on various money rais- ing projects, Merilee Jay, Marianne Commenator, Karen Liesman, Kit Enerson, John Locke, and Dale Berglund departed, for their various destinations, last June, Besides seeing famous tourist spots, these students were able to become a part of a family, to learn the customs and language of their country. Two months never went so fast. Merilee's Irish family lived in a large stone farm house out in the country. Kit's German father owned a hardware store. John enjoyed a vacation at the summer house of his Danish family. Dale was the only American on his brother's baseball team in Hol- land. Karen had a second winter near the mountains in Argentina. They all learned many things that summer, such as how to eat new foods, what to do when a girl un- dresses on the beach, what other people think of the United States, how to get through U.S. customs in less than one hour, and how to communicate in an- other language. Most of these wonderful experi- ences were due to the great help and devotion of Mrs. Bertha Oyer. This truly was an experience in understanding between people and between countries. It is hoped that Hudson will always be able to say that they had a hand in bettering the relations in this troubled world. 36 This year's exchange students at Hudson Area High School were Beate Meiser of Germany, Helena Haapalainen of Finalnd, and Olli Pakkala of Finland. Beate Meiser lived with the Robert Ciscos. She not only enjoyed observing the games but also partici- pated in many American athletic sports. Helena Haapalainen, who lived with the Frank Lockes, enjoyed skiing at Irish Hills and participated in the activities of the G.A.A. Olli Pakkala, a member of the Art Capper family, not only did well in academics but also participated in Intramural Basketball. All three enjoyed the friendly surroundings of the Hudson Community. All agreed that nowhere else had they been shown so much respect and warm hospitality. Mrs. Oyer proved to be an enthusiastic and dedicated advisor. The student aide has many responsi- bilities. He checks papers, takes attendance, makes quizzes, and does odd jobs. The student aide is at the disposal of the commanding teacher. The teach- ers always tried and enjoyed keeping their student aides busy. The large turnout of students to fill the limited number of student aide positions demonstrated the willingness of our high school students to sacrifice their study halls and free periods in favor of hard let. The student aide was left on his own many times. Some of them seemed to be wandering the halls, either lost or forgotten. Mrs. James liked the ayde plan. Mr. Blackburn's student aides were known as band-aides. The student aide program was an asset to the school and to the teachers. The students performed well in the face of many great temptations. The stu- dent aide program was a valuable asset to the school curriculum. 38 Office Practice FRONT ROW: Linda Goodlock, Debbie Vanderpool, Janice San- born, Linda Ireland, Wendy Ames, Kathy Wright, Sally Wright, Rosalie Moore, Claudia Hackett. Students who wished to donate their time in service to the school, could enroll in the Office Practice program. The students were under the adminis- trative leadership of Mr. Duncan and Mrs. Donaldson. Students were chosen for their dependibility, willingness to work, and ability to follow directions. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors were usually accepted in the Office Practice class. They received one credit for this course. There were usually three stu- dents working in the office each hour. The students received first-hand experience concerning the workings of the school office. All types of clerical duties were performed and the stu- dents were kept continually busy per- forming many jobs. The office practice program is small, but it demands an immense desire on the students part to accept responsibil- ity and to contend with many hardships. I didn't know we had to type! Where's the ball, John??? Lunch loan!!!! There is no doubt that this was the year of the Tiger. A great season, said Coach Saylor. There were no super-stars, just a great team effort. Years of hard work payed off, as the Tigers ended the season with a perfect 9-0-0 record, their third straight LCAA Championship, and No. 2 ranking in the United Press International (UPI) Class C poll. This year's Tigers were led by sixteen seniors. Tom Serafin, Sam Stucky, Gary Goodsell, Keith Baker, Randy Jones, Steve Kingsley, and Dale Bergland were the out- standing senior offensive linemen while Mike Opsal and Pat Monahan rolled up yardage in the backfield. Other seniors lost by graduation were Bruce Hartman, Mark Graves, Blair Campbell, Mark Butts, Tim Freese, John Hepker, and Greg Sword. The underclassmen added great strength to the Ti- gers of 69 . The leading star winner was Jeff Sherman with 24 stars followed by Willie Joe Biggers and John Wollet with 12 apiece. Other starters that will return next year are Mike Hepker, Bill Johnston, Dick San- ford, Mike Butts, and Tom Goodrich. Coach Saylor was aided by three fine assistant coach- es. The line coach was Mr. Ray Curran, while Mr. Rob- ert Tinney taught the offensive backs and black dots, and Mr. Ron Spagnoli taught the defensive backs. This year John Wollet led the Tigers in rushing. He rushed 144 times for a total of 1008 yards averaging 7 yards per carry. Close behind John was Tom Goodrich and Pat Monahan. Pat Monahan led the team in tackles for the second year in a row with 61. Willie Joe Biggers and John Wollet were close behind. Although the Tigers were mostly a running team rushing for 2,466 yards, the Tiger passing game was very effective. Mike Opsal passed for 730 yards and 50%. Dale Berglund hauled in 13 of the arials for 351 yards and 4 touch downs while Tom Serafin caught 12 for 204 yards and 2 touch downs. This year many of the Tigers gained recognition. John Wollet also made All State Class C along with Sam Stucky second team, and Pat Monahan and Dale Berglund honorable mention. Our boys have proved that Hudson truly is Number 1.
