A call that told of freedom, A call that spoke of life, A call that lured us onward Through happiness and strife. It said we must be patient. It held our future there. Our future — for the asking — We only had to care. We were afraid to enter, Yet anxious to begin. Our minds knew not the answer To our destiny within. Some, bravely battled onward And Conquered every turn. While others drifted far away, Afraid to live and learn. For those of us who entered, We found, before too long, That shadows there began to fade As we conquered right and wrong. And now that we have reached the end, It’s time to turn around And review the past with pleasure, For that which we have found. The hall for us is lighted. We know that we have won. But as for knowing life itself We have ony just begun. Papa's in heaven. Don Smith. John Inhulsen. 2nd Row: Diane Line. Claudia Dobbins. Dan Stucky. Janice Mackey. Mary Ebbitt. Kathy Fish. Prophetically, the 1963 Hudson football season began on a Friday the thirteenth. The year proved to be one in which nothing went right for the Tigers. Injuries to key players hindered the Tigers throughout the season. Co-captains Scott Barkway and Larry Barrett were both hobbled by knee injuries. Inexperience also was detrimental to die squad: nineteen varsity football players graduated last year, and coach- es Rip Kinney and Dale Storrer had only ten seniors returning on this year’s team. The result of these factors was a disappointing sea- son for Tiger fans. The forward pass was the Tiger’s most potent offensive weapon. Quarterback Steve Barkway completed 53 out of 122 passes for 650 yards. End Chuck Brown caught 35 of these aerials for 515 yards. Roger Henning and Rick Dilyard, who rushed for 362 yards and 348 yards respectively, paced the Tiger ground attack. The best Hudson game of the season was played against a powerful Jackson St. Mary’s squad. A fired-up Hudson team matched Jack- son’s efforts throughout the game, only to lose a 20-13 decision on a Jackson touchdown in the closing minutes of the game. Roger Henning was selected by his teammates as the most valuable player of the 1963 season. Steve Malarney was the top defensive player with 71 tackles. Chuck Brown and Steve Ma- larney were named to the L.C.A.A. offensive team, and Scott Barkway was named to the L.C.A.A. defensive team. Phil Lawrence be- came the first freshman in ten years to win a varsity letter. Steve Webster, Stan Hathway, Ken Poe, Jim “The main strength of this year’s J.V.’s lay in the fact that there were no stars, but rather a group of boys who like competition.’’ This statement by backfield coach Jack Zimmer- man sufficiently explains the reason for the success of the 1963 Junior Varsity football team. This opinion was seconded by line coach Ray Curran: “The boys did a tremendous job; it was a fine team effort.’’ An incomparable defense combined with an explosive offense to produce a 7-0 season re- cord for the little Tigers. The defensive team performed almost unbelievably as it held all opponents scoreless and prevented any team from penetrating within the Hudson twenty yard line. Hudson opponents averaged only 96 yards rushing per game. The defense was spear- headed by Bill Inhulsen and Joe Exe, the de- Jacques. John Turczin. Dale Harris. Charles Deter, Dave Double, Aaron Salinas. Mr. Curran. Row 3: Mike Brennan. Rick Kimling, Terry Reams, Bill Ellis, Phil Meredith, Char- les Pear. Steve Daugherty. Jack Redder. Larry Day. Richard Rinck, John Steele. Alan Fish, Ron Newlove. fensive captain. Although often outweighted by its opposition, the defensive unit relied upon quickness and desire to effectively stymie all adversaries. Although overshadowed by a superlative de- fense, the J.V, offense performed creditably. The team scored a total of 144 points for an average of 20.5 points per game. Halfback Perry Stutz was the team’s leading ground gainer and leading scorer. Quarterback Bob Mayer, fullback Larry Clouse, and halfback Larry Hanna, offensive captain, rounded out the starting backfield. The future looks bright indeed for Hudson football fans. The spirit and competitiveness shown by the 1963 Junior Varsity football squad seem to indicate that these young ball players are willing and able to play an exciting brand of football. 54 Varsity Cheerleaders 1st Row: Janice Mackey. 2nd Row: Joanne Bice. Joe Serafim Row 2: Mr. Hinkle. George Davis, Allen Eady. Jim Distler, Chuck guards Brown. From the fans’ point of view, the 1963-64 season was a dismal one. However, for the team members, the season was far from being a wasted one. This year was a rebuilding year, evidenced by the fact that three sophomores — George Davis, Bruce Lewis, and 6’8” A1 Eady — won varsity letters. There was no definite starting five throughout the season; competition was keen and almost every team member started at least one game. There was an excellent spirit of cooperation on this year’s team, and the season’s successes were definitely achieved through team effort. The only returning starter from last year’s team was 6’4” center Larry Barrett. Barrett, the team captain, had quite a year: he led the team in scoring 258 and in rebounding 309. His rugged work on the boards won him the admiration and respect of opponents and team- mates. Following Barrett in scoring was junior guard Chuck Brown, who totaled 211 points for the season. Junior Jim Distler and senior Don Smith both passed the century mark in scoring. Distler was also second in the rebounding de- partment. Senior forward Steve Barkway and junior Dave Evenson, Jim Taylor, and Joe Serafin rounded out the squad and were valuable assets to the team. Both Barrett and Brown received post-season honors. Barrett was named to the firstL.C.A.A. team and to the second Lenawee All-County team. Brown was named to a second team L.C.A.A. berth and received honorable mention in the county voting. The 1963-64 Tigers played many exciting games. In only two games were they decisively beaten. In all of the other games, they fell just a few points short of victory. Two games stood out as season highlights. In February, a fired-up Hudson squad almost up- set the league champion Addison Panthers. On March 4, in their only tournament game, the Tigers put on their finest exhibition of the season. With Captain Barrett sweeping the boards, the battling Hudson Tigers led a power- ful Chelsea team throughout the game only to see their victory snatched away in the last twenty-five seconds. The tournament game with Chelsea was high- lighted by the fine performances of the junior and sophomore players. It seemed to prove that the inexperienced team which had started the season had matured into a team which must be reckoned with next year. 56 57 $uuior Varsity Basketball Row 1: Mr. Chilcote, Mike Brennan, Mike Borton, Ron Hanna, Jim Smith, Allen Eady, Steve Daugherty, ChuokPeltier, Ball, Perry Stutz, Mike Mitchell. Row 2: Jim Bailey. Larry David Dulworth. The 1963-64 Junior Varsity Basketball Team compiled a creditable six wins and five losses season record. “Erratic” is perhaps the best word to use to describe Coach Gordon Chil- cote’s squad. At times, the J.V. Tigers showed flashes of brilliance and played in a snappy, well-organized manner; at other times, they played well below their capabilities. They im- proved tremendously as the season progressed and were developing into a fine team as the season neared its end. The campaign was hurt, however, when A1 Eady was called up to the Varsity for the last few games of the season. Eady had been the Junior Varsity’s leading re- bounder, and his vacated position was never really filled. Although it is difficult to evaluate the 1963- 64 season from a team standpoint, it is not at all difficult to appraise some individual per- formances. Guard Ron Ball was the most impressive ball-handler and playmaker, and guard Perry Stutz was the team’s outstanding defensive player and top hustler. Center A1 Eady was a strong rebounder on both the J.V. and Varsity squads. Forward Larry Hanna improved markedly as the season progressed and ended the season as the strongest J.V. rebounder. Forward Chuck Peltier was a steady performer throughout the year. Steve Daughtery, Jim Smith, and Jim Bailey were ready to come from the bench and give the team a lift. All of the 1963-64 Junior Varsity basketball players were sophomores. They should all prove to be important members of next season’s varsity. 58 Jrcshmen Basketball On the statistics sheet for the 1963-64 fresh- man basketball season, freshman coach Ray Curran wrote this comment: “Tough man for man defense won these games for our team.” The players’ defensive efforts attested to the fact that they spent many hours throughout the season working on the finer points of this phase of the game. The Hudson freshmen held opponents to an average of only 33.5 points a game while compiling a record of 10 wins and 3 losses. This year’s squad had plenty of offensive punch, too. The freshmen Tigers averaged 48.3 points a game and made 37% of all shots from the floor. Forward Jack Veneros led all scorers with a total of 168 points for the season, an average of 13 points per game. Following Veneros in this department, Ken Poe had a season total of 123 points and John Donaldson added 116 tallies. Rebounding, also stressed in practice by Joach Curran, was another strong point of this year s squad. Center Jim Jacques grabbed 174 of the 582 rebounds recovered from the backboards during the season, and forward Ken Poe hauled in 168. Dale Harris was considered by his coach to be the team’s finest defensive player. John Donaldson was the floor leader and playmaker. Alan Whitesell and Phil Lawrence did a credit- able job as sixth and seventh men on the team. The season record could easily have been an unblemished 13-0. The two regular season losses were handed the Hudson five by Hills- dale, and the last game between these two rivals was decided by only one basket (50-48). The Hudson freshmen’s other loss was received in the Clinton Freshman Basketball Tournament. Onsted defeated Hudson in overtime. By de- feating Clinton and Dexter, Hudson still took third place in this post-season event. These young ballplayers can be extremely proud of the record they compiled. Inconsistency is usually the mark of a young ball club, but consistency was one of the keys to the fresh- men’s performances in the 1963-64 season. By their showing, the freshmen have given an indication of things to come in the years ahead. Row 1: Jack Bracey. Bill Elliott. John Donaldson. Mike Exe, Allen Whitesell. Row 2: Mr. Curran. In the Solo and Ensemble Festival at Addison, band members took seven first divisions and six seconds. The band traveled to Jonesville Band Clinic and entered in the State Competition this year. Four new instruments — a baritone saxo- phone, a bass clarinet, an alto clarinet, and a French horn — were added to the band this year. The band shows great potential, and by next year it will be one of the best in the county. Majorettes Carole Hanna. Jorge, who is sixteen, is staying with the Arthur Freeborns of 424 Oak Street. He is sponsored by Youth for Understanding. A fourth year student in high school, Jorge would have graduated this year from his school in Montevideo. After the Urguayan completes his high school years, he plans to attend the university in Montevideo. His parents are both dentists and he also intends to become one. When Jorge was asked what he liked about our school and its students, he replied, “The people are very helpful and friendly, the class- es are quite informal, and the students are not as formally dressed as those in Uruguay. Jorge says he likes the United States of America very well and wants to return. Carl Moppett, who is staying with Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Balser of 507 Grove Street, is one of two exchange students from Uruguay. Carl arrived here at Christmas time; therefore, he will spend approximately six months in Hudson. Mr. Moppett, who is eighteen years old, likes Hudson very much and thinks the people are very friendly. Asked how he liked school, Carl replied, “The schoolwork is about the same, but in Urugury there is no homework.! Carl also enjoys the basketball games, especially the cheerleaders. When Carl returns to Ur- uguay he will continue his education to become a lawyer. The students and faculty certainly enjoyed having Carl be a part of Hudson High School Carl Moppett this year. Claudia Dobbins and Peter Dentler MlldsOH Hosts Joreign Exchange A new boy on campus this year is Peter Dentler, our exchange student from Germany. He comes to us from a small town near Lue- beck, where his father is an insurance ex- ecutive. Young Mr. Dentler is staying with Mr. and Mrs. Orron H. Pebbles, who own a farm near Rollin. He enjoys his family and says that he is treated just like a son. This is his first experience on a farm. He says, “At first I was scared by the cows and now they are scared by me.” Peter likes our school very much and says he particularly likes the informal relationship between students and teachers. He also en- joys the pep meetings, which are unknown in German schools. When our exchange student returns to Ger- many, he will complete one-and-a-half years of high school after which he will probably have three years of military service. Studying at the university will follow. Peter says that he would like to attend an American college, majoring in languages. At this time Peter states that he would like to be a journalist but also declares that this is subject to change. Peter is an excellent student whom we all enjoy. Student The summer of 1963 found Hudson’s first student abroad. Claudia Dobbins spent two months in Dortmund, Germany. Hudson Area High School which sponsored Claudia’s trip was very pleased to be represented in the ex- change program. Claudia, who stayed with the Oskar Kleine- Kolkers, learned to speak the German language by the end of the summer. She also learned the German customs, which she enjoyed very much. When Claudia was asked about her summer, she replied, “It was a wonderful experience that I would be glad to repeat next summer. She continued, “Because I can not go back next summer, I urge everyone who is eligible to participate in the program. I feel that anyone could benefit from such a trip.” 67 Student Council 1st Row: Carolyn Lawrence. Kathy Fish. Sally Julian. Connie Sally Rozelle. Beth Coleman. Jim Driskill. Peter Dentler. Kunkle. The Hudson High School Student Council, under the leadership of President Carolyn Lawrence, was composed this year of thirty- two members, representing the respective classes and clubs. The Council was again responsible this year for selling candy at noon, scheduling activities, directing Home- coming activities, and promoting the general welfare of the student body. During the school year the Council was engaged in many activities that were complete- ly new. It investigated the possibility of placing a Coke or malt machine in the cafe- teria. It studied Parliamentary Procedure and sought to find ways to improve and stream- line Council meetings. The Council also pro- posed an amendment to the Student Constitution to enable each class to be represented accord- ing to its size but still enable each class to retain equal voting strength on Council. Other council officers were Kathy Fish, Vice- President; Sally Julian, Secretary; and Connie Kunkle, Treasurer. Two seniors and two juniors represented the Hudson Student Coun- cil on the L.C.A.A. Student Council. These members were Carolyn Lawrence, Don Smith, Mac Gutierrez, and Sue Onweller. 68 yearbook Staff The yearbook staff of 1964 was comprised of thirteen students all of whom worked especially hard. Perhaps one incentive for this hard work was a new yearbook room, which has belonged exclusively to the yearbook staff. This was something new for all previous year- books since 1958 have been produced in a room shared with the Student Council. The Yearbook funds were more plentiful than last year’s because of the staff’s ambition. While participating in the magazine drive, one of the staff became top salesman for the whole school. Also several dances were held to raise money and to disperse yearbooks and summer supplements. 69 I - -TkJ—_ j Ni Cibrarij Jrt Show 70 Varsity Club Row 1: Gene Campbell. Scott Barkway. Phil Veneros. Then they bowled, play- ed basketball, and went swimming at the Adrian College pool. To raise funds the girls had a bake sale, sold Hudson Tiger sweatshirts, and held a carnival. At Christmas time, the group went caroling which was followed bv a party at the school. Judy Dailey was chosen queen for the evening. She was presented a red carnation corsage. Miss Burgett was given a box of candy by the girls. The event was a great success. This year was a very enjoyable one for the members of the organization.
