The cafeteria staff is ably headed by Mrs. Kaiser, who is assisted by three experienced cooks. The rest of the staff is made up of high school students who earn their lunches by assisting in the cafeteria. The cafeteria serves about two-hundred a day. It has the latest equipment which includes a walk- in freezer, a complete steam table, diswasher, and stack ovens. A1 the food is prepared here and transported to the other schools. This cafeteria receives five cents or foodstuffs amounting to that for each meal served to students. Mrs. Oyer has been head of the guidance-counsel- ing program since it originated here in 1961. She assists the students with any questions they might have concerning colleges or their futures in gen- eral. Mrs. Oyer helps the student study the ad- vantages and disadvantages of various careers. The guidance-counseling room has numerous folders and brochures on different colleges and also trade schools. Mrs. Oyer deals mainly with juniors and seniors. Mr. Kinney, our newest counselor, was added to the guidance-counseling program last year, because of the increasing needs of our students. He assists the students with any of their personal problems. VARSITY FOOTBALL The teams of 1962 had a sign of ven- gence in their eyes after a sudden upset for the league title in 1961. The Tigers started this season with two, one point losses to Haslett and Blissfield. They then bounced back with five straight wins over Clinton, Pittsford, Jackson St. Marys, Addison, and Onsted. Hudson beat Addison in the game that everyone thought would decide the L.C.A.A. title, by the score of 26-19. Addison played a hard game all the way, but the Tigers were not to be stopped. The last two games were very thrilling. The first being at Hillsdale, where the Tigers met the team that handed Hudson their third defeat of the season. In the traditional rival game at Morenci, the Tigers won the game without being threatened. In this game the members of the line went into the backfield and the backfield went up to the line, still the Tigers roared on to win the L.C.A.A. Championship. Led by the co-captains Chuck Barnes and John DeLine the Tigers scored 211 points overall to 93 for their opponents. Varsity In Action First row (left to right) Mr. Zimmerman, Perry Stutz, Terry Barnhart, Aaron Salinas, Art Barnhart, Steve Malarney, Tony Kingsley, Bill Inhulsen, Bob Malarney, Bob Malarney, Mr. Curran, Mr. Chilcote. Third row: Jim Bailey, Phil Rinck, Gene Campbell, Elwood Penfold, Jim Smith, Bob Holmes, Jack Wirick, Bob Cregg, Larry Hanna, Richard Rinck. Fourth row: Leslie Hutchison, Chet Hill, Pat McCullough, Ben Bowers, Barry Becannen, David Poe, Bob Whittaker, Joe Exe, Steve Daughtery. Junior Varsity Football The Junior Varsity football team finished the 1962 football season with a fine record of five wins, one tie, and one defeat. The “little tigers 9 beat Onsted, Clinton, Pittsford, Blissfield, and Addison before their winning streak of five was topped by a fine Hillsdale team. Even though this team lost its last game to Morenci, we still think that they improved greatly as the season progressed. Led by their co-captains Steve Malarney and Art Barnhart the Junior Varsity scored 134 points to 26 for their opponents. They were held scoreless only once. Ross Hinesman is shown here with the league standing scoreboard that he made. Paul Double constructed this realistic tiger head for the gymnasium wall. School Spirit 1st row, left to right; Wesley Hutchison, Judy Camp, Judy Mettler, Gary Teske, Carol Hanna, Gerrie Hassenzahl. 2nd row; Sue Michael, Larry Atkin, Steve Hathaway, Tom VanAuken, Sue Merillat. 3rd row; David LaForest, Tom Miller, Bill Goodrich, Don Smith, Bill Mackey, Gary Merillat. VARSITY BASKETBALL Kneeling, left to right; Jim Rickner, Chuck Brown, Jim Garr, Chuck Barnes, John Hartley, John Inhulsen. Standing; Mr. Hinkle, Randy Borton, Ray Hanna, Larry Haight, Lee Daugherty, Larry Barrett, Steve Barkway, Gordon Baker, Alan Baker. The 1962-63 Hudson Basketball Team won no trophies, but they still came out with a fine 12 win 3 loss record. Hudson was stopped in their second game by Hillsdale after breezing past Pittsford. The Tigers came back to win the next two games only to be stopped by a power- ful Addison team. The team was deter- mined to make up for this costly loss, and they followed with six straight wins. The team’s next game was with Addison. A win would mean a tie for the L.C.A.A. Championship; a loss would mean second place provided the Tigers won all of their remaining games. The Addison Hudson Opponents 60 Pittsford 26 59 Hillsdale 64 55 Madison 38 60 Onsted 42 42 Addison 50 72 Pittsford 36 66 Clinton 32 63 Morenci 42 67 Madison 55 game ended as a loss for the Tigers, but they ended their regular season with three more wins, one being a win over a new opponent, Jackson St. Mary’s. Two regulars missed this game, but Hud- son’s bench helped win this tight game. The Tigers, although favored to win the districts at Hillsdale, lost their first game to Michigan Center. The tream greatly missed the help of their top rebounder and most valuable player, Jim Garr. Larry Haight ended the season with 304 points and was the team’s high scorer. 77 Onsted 40 62 Hillsdale 41 52 Addison 68 68 Clinton 49 60 Morenci 48 57 Jackson St. Mary’s 49 Tournament play (Hillsdale districts) Hudson 55 Michigan Center 57 Aetion Shots Junior Varsity Basketball Kneeling, Left to right; Philip Goodrich, Jim Taylor, Junior Gutierrez, William Davis, Joe Serafin, David Evenson, Stephen Isenhower. The freshmen played the toughest schedule in recent years, opening their schedule with wins over Madison and Onsted. Following Onsted, they played Addi- son, Adrian, and Hillsdale, which were ex- cellent games. After Christmas, the fresh- men hit the winning road again by defeating Madison for the second time. Following Madi- son, they again played a very determined Onsted team which caught the freshmen off guard and defeated our boys. The Tigers then came to life and played one of their best games of the season beating Hillsdale by a margin of 30 points. Next they lost to Adrian, a much larger tream, and completed the sea- son with a victory over a fine Morenci ball club. The Hudson freshmen were led by co-captains George Davis and Chuck Peltier. This is his first trip to America. Paul was born on July 11, 1945 in Bad-Driburg, West Germany. He was raised in Vicht, a town some thirty miles from the Belgium and the Dutch borders, Paul attended schools in Vicht, which he said were harder than Hudson Area High School. He liked our school for the shorter hours, shorter week, and the longer vacations. When Paul returns to Germany, he will attend high school for about seventeen months, after which he intends to join the German military service. When he completes his military obligations, Paul will spend five years in college studying to be a mechanical engineer. Paul received excellent grades during his stay here. In fact, he was given honorable mention on the Top Ten list. He participated in track, specifically in the mile run. Paul said that he enjoyed his stay in this country very much.
