Treasurer Catherine Hartley Junior Editor Activities Mary Hutchison Joan Patterson Sports Business Manager Assistant Dennis Brinkerhoff Rex Lickly Scott Jackson Marie Frese Bonnie Huffman Carol Grafe Faculty Editor Joyce Lillywhite Senior Editor Marjie McCombs Senior Activities Barbara Joughin Sophomore Editor Keith Yeutter Freshman Editor John Knauss Hudson Area High School Hudson, Michigan Dedication and Memoriam Ron Shiffler The staff of the 1961 Hudsonian wishes to dedicate this book to the memory of our friend and classmate, Ron Shiffler. Ron, a member of the class of 1961, lost his life June 4, I960. He was born in Hudson on April 8, 1943, and attended Hudson schools. While Ron had a deep interest in horses and ponies, music was his life. He played first cor- onet in our high school band and often acted as conductor of the band. He was a member of a local barber shop quartet, and he sang in the Methodist Church choir. Ron had won a scholar- ship to Interlochen National Music Camp, which he would have attended in the summer of I960. Ron will always be remembered in our school and in our community for his fine musical talent. Ron’s talent was truly a gift from God, and Ron devoted his life to the perfection of this gift. A d m i n i s School Walter Graves-secretary, Preston Town- send-vice president, Russel Leffingwell- treasurer, Edward Engle-president IT IS MORE BLESSED” Centuries before Christ gave the world the Golden Rule”, Plato said, The strength of a democracy is judged by the quality of the services rendered by its citizens.” Both of these thoughts must be most seriously considered by you who take your place in the adult community. Service to your fellow man and service to your country are extremely important today when many seem to feel that the quality of services rendered by government to citizens indicates the strength of a democracy. Our democratic society will grow to new heights of spirit- ual and economic strength and quality as you and your fellow graduates throughout the country take up the torch of service to God and to mankind and only as all of us adopt the philos- ophy that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Joseph S. Zapytowski Superintendent We wish to express our thanks to the Board of Education for the fine work they have done. Their task is not always an easy one. They spend many hours making decisions for the betterment of our futures. Mrs. Juanita Welch Secretary t r a t ion Joseph S. Zapytowski, Edward Hackett- trustee, Richard Goodrich-trustee, Rich- ard Berlin-trustee. Vie sincerely appreciate the op- portunities they have created for us; and we believe that in the future, they will provide the students of Hudson Area High School with even greater opportunities. The Hudsonian” is a yearly record of the most exciting times in one’s life. In the future you will reflect upon the school, activities, joys, and sorrows that occurred during the 1960 - 61 school year. Unfortunately, Miss Osgood was unable to be with you because of her illness, but I am sure her Hudsonians” will bring many fond memories to her in the future. Likewise the graduates of 1961 will find their Hudsonian” full of memories in the years ahead as the challenge of the Sixties dawns. The responsibilities that face each and everyone of you are tremendous. All must be aware of their environment and find enjoyment as well as motovation to meet the daily prob- lems as well as reaching future goals. Develop all of your potentials as one never knows when they will be needed. Mankind has struggled for thousands of years to develop a democracy for men to live in freedom and to enjoy it’s blessings. However, do not forget freedom will exist only as long as each individual accepts the responsibilities to his fullest. What will the future be for you? Who would have believed forty years ago that man would be flying at more than two thousand miles per hour ! Your life is before you. Make the most of it! Success to each of you in the future. Onsted edged the Tigers 13-6 to clinch the LCAA, but the Tigers again came back and de- feated Addison and Hillsdale. Jackson St. Marys, a real foot- ball machine, visited the Tigers and took home a 48-6 victory. In the season finale, the Ti- gers took on traditional rival, Morenci, probably the best Mor- enci team in years. The Tigers ran up a half time lead of 32-6, and coasted to a final score of 38-19. 1960 was the year the Tigers were supposed to be in the dol- drums, but twenty four hardwork- ing football players kept the Hud- son tradition intact. This squad, led by co-captains, Bob McNett and Carroll Jones, was always in contention for all possible honors. In the opening game. Bliss- field scored with 1:11 left on the clock to beat the Tigers, 6-0, but then Ypsilanti-Roosevelt, Clin- ton, and Pittsfield, in turn, fell victim to the mighty claws of the Graduating seniors Co-captains, McNett and Jones Carroll Jones, John Marry, Bob McNett, and Jim Rickner were chosen to the All-LCAA team, and Larry Gifford, John Goll, and Verle Carpenter re- ceived second team honors. John Marry was chosen as most valu- able player of I960. The Hudson Junior Varsity football team finished the I960 season with a record of three wins and four losses. After an opening game loss to Onsted, 7-6, the Little Tigers” divided the remaining six games by beating Addison, Clinton, and Morenci, while losing to Brooklyn, Blissfield, and Hillsdale. The team im- proved considerably as the season went along and the boys played their two best games against Hillsdale and Morenci. De- spite a 33-70 loss to Hillsdale in the second game, the Tigers returned to take three in a row as Madison, Onsted, and Addison, in turn, fell to the Tigers. Next in line, Summer- field successfully defeated the Tigers 72-59. Pittsford took the return game on their own floor 73-54. The next four games were zig-zag victories. The Tigers beat Clinton, lost to Morenci, defeated Madison, and lost to Onsted. The return game with Hillsdale was more or less a repeat of the first. The class C” Tigers battled hard against the class B” Hornets, but, even though they tied at the end of the half, Hillsdale came out on the top to win 78-56. The second game with Addison was the most exciting game of the whole season. The Tigers came from behind in the third quarter to win 66-56. The Tigers then defeated Clinton, and the end of the season found Hudson and Morenci battling it out for the LCAA championship. After a tough battle, Morenci came out on top 71-58. In the district tournaments, Hudson successfully eliminated Pittsford 53-40, but they lost to Camden-Frontier 55-50. The 1961 co-captains were John Goll and Neil Gerry. The leading scorer was John Goll (267 points), with Neil Gerry coming in second (155 points). Bob McNett and Carroll Jones are the only two graduating seniors. The Tigers finished second in the league with seven wins and three losses. We can all be proud of our Tigers. Congratulations, Boys. A fine job, well done. The Junior Varsity basketball team finished the 1961 season with 10 losses and 5 wins. They lost their first six games to Pittsford, Hillsdale, Madison, Onsted, Addison, and Sum- merfield respectively. The return bout with Pittsford was their first win of the season. They defeated Pittsford by a score of 40-50. The Little Tigers” took the next game from Clinton 47-40, but then dropped the next two to Morenci and Maddison. The next five games were more or less a see-saw bunch. The 'Tittle Tigers defeated Onsted, lost to Hillsdale, defeated Addison and Clinton, but lost the season finale to Morenci 46-50. Although the 1961 season proved not so fruitful, we are sure that the boys can and will bring us a better season next year. The Hudson girls basketball team, a group of inexperienced ball players who lacked confidence, faced Onsted with their opening game. They made many mistakes but they ended victorious by a slim 4 points, 39 35. Trying to correct their errors, the girls traveled to Hillsdale and won the scrimmage 2-0 by default. Next in line was Addison. The girls wanted very badly to win this game because Addison defeated them twice in the preceding year. The girls displayed much spark, they controlled the ball well, and they defeated Addison 38-19. The fourth game, with Napoleon, was strictly a defensive battle. The girls shooting percentage was about 23%. They managed to win 20-17. When the return game with Na- poleon came, the girls knew that they definitely had to play better ball if they were going to win. This proved to be the best game of the year. W'hile Napoleon concentrated on keeping Jackie Graves from scoring, she did get two free throws, Martha Hutchison poured in twenty points. The game ended with Hudson on top 45-27. The return game with Addison was a repeat of the first one. The girls held a tight zone defense and repeated the score 38-19. The girls had another scrimmage with St. Joseph Academy. This game belonged to Nancy Shelle of Hudson. She stopped her sister, Mary Lou from St. Joseph, from scoring more than 18 points. Martha Hutchison, 'Big Hutch”, dropped in twenty four points to give the girls another victory of 54-42. In the return scrimmage with Hillsdale, our girls defeated them 34-20. Kay Gifford did a beautiful job of stopping their six foot Morlock. The first game with the Girls’ Training School of Adrian was the most enjoyable game for the girls. They defeated them 39-14. In the return game with Onsted, the girls played both good defensive and offensive ball. They defeated Onsted 42-33. The girls hit over 75% of their shots. The last game of the season ended once more victorious when the girls defeated the Girls’ Training School on their return trip. This was the game for the seniors because it was their last game, and Mary Hutchison, 'Little Hutch”, popped in fifteen points to win 40-13. Freshman Basketball was initiated to the Hudson Area High School athletic program this year. The team played seven ball games: two against Hillsdale, two against Addison, two against Adrian Catholic Central, and one against Morenci. The team started slowly losing its first three games to Hillsdale, Addison, and Adrian Catholic Cen- tral. Then the boys came back to win three ball games against Hillsdale, Morenci, and Adrian Catholic Central. They lost their last game to Addison by a very close score. The team showed improvement and we hope to see a lot more of these boys on future Hudson basket- ball team. The Tigers then defeated Pittsford 59 2 3 to 49 1 2, but lost to Onsted 66 to 41. In a triangular meet, Jonesville scored 100 points to Hudson’s 34 and Madison’s 2. Addison then defeated the Tigers 57 to 52. In the league meet, Hudson finished fourth as Morenci, as expected, far out-distanced the field. The winner receives a small trophy, and his name is placed on a large trophy that will be placed in the school. The winner is chosen by the members of the Varsity Club and the high school coaches on his athletic ability and his work as an athlete. The 1961 winner of this award was Carroll Jones. Carroll was co-captain of the football team and an all-LCAA selection in his senior year as well as being a member of the basketball and track teams. The year of ’60-’6l has seen many changes in the cheerlead- ing squad. The Varsity girls have become very enthusiastic and have portrayed a great deal of spirit. They organized and elected Karol Redding as their captain, which proved very ben- eficial. These girls have con- tinually worked for better morale among the student body. The Reserves have really dis- played much agility, skill, and form in leading the students. They chose Cherie Haight as their captain and have worked together most satisfactorily. It is certain that in the future Hud son High” will have some excel- lent cheering leadership. The Hudson High School Band has many purposes and objectives that could go on to infinity, but a lew of the more prominent or evident ones are as follows: (1) Most important is that the band student develops an understanding and appreciation for music that can only be gained through performance. (2) The band is an organized group contributing to the morale and spirit of the entire student body and community. A few goals of the band other than those with educational implications are fund-raising campaigns to obtain new instruments and uniforms. This is important because next year band membership is expected to increase to forty-five pieces. The following year (1962) there will be at least a sixty-five piece band. Although the band has not increased in size from the past years, it has matured and has proved to be an organization for all of us to be proud of. The friends we made; how true we know they’ll always be. Till end of time; these Hudson girls and boys. Orange and black our colors will remain divine. As fighting tigers, ever will be known.
