The Hudson High School Instrumental Music Department really got a head start this year by appearing at the Canadian National Exhibition at Toronto, Canada during the last week of August. We have a concert band of 56 members who have appeared at many programs throughout Michigan and Ohio. The marching band under the direction of Miss Joan Guss, Drum Major, was a feature of the half time activities for all the football games. The Board of Education purchases new band uniforms for the group and the Band Booster Club contributed with new majorette uniforms. Marcelle LaFallette, Jule Sweezy, Jean Lyons, Maureen Westgate and Dean Guss were selected on try out basis for majorettes. During May, the annual Band Bounce was held sponsored by the High School Band, also we sponsored the Jackson High School Symphony Orchestra and con- cert band in a delightful program. The beginners and junior band in our grade school have been a real asset to our senior band. An acappella choir of 64 voices was organized for the first time this year. The choir meet for five rehearsals per week. Out of this group the students themselves organized sextets, quartets and trios. These groups as well as the choir performed for high school assemblies and service clubs. The choir presented a two act operetta. An Old Kentucky Garden. The students making up the cast were as follows: Kim Speer, Joan Guss, Charles Stucky, Terry Speer, Wilma Korte, Shelia Sprague, Harold Robinson, Carol Hart, Delmer Marry, Tom Janick, Joan Freeman, Clinton Gibbs, Shirley Parker, 39 Kay Gosnell, Gloria Lyons, Mary Marowelli, Albert Wilson, and Harry Herd. The team rolled up 164 points while limiting the opposition to 52. Only three teams were able to cross Hudson's goal line. It was a hard challenging trail leading to the championship as nearly any team in the league was capable of beating anyother, and upsets were not uncommon. Significant among the season's games was the rough bruising 7-2 victory over a powerful Clinton eleven; the 26-0 smashing of a highly regarded Blissfield crew; and ask any lad who wore a Tiger jersey if he will ever forget the Morenci game. Although ending up on the short end of a 13-18 score, the Hudson team showed the more than 4,000 spectators why they deserved to be the champions, as only the winged legs of Marcus Cisco kept victory from the Tigers. Their only loss came at the hands of a heavy Tecumseh eleven. This was the first year that games were scheduled for a reserve squad, and it gave boys who were young and inexperienced a chance to compete with other schools instead of being just âscrimmage meat for the varsity. Several of the boys on this team will be playing varsity ball next season, and should help the team con- siderably. 54 Junior Varsity First Row-I. tor. The boys had height, rebounding ability, were good shots, and had plenty of scrap. The ex- perience gained during the past season plus practice should place several of these boys on the first team next season. After posting a mediocre regular season, highlighted by two close games with league champions Clintion; and a 48-45 victory over a much taller Blissfield team, after being sixteen points behind at halftime. Hudson went into tournament play with a 6 won 9 lost record, with 6 of the defeats being by no more than 4 points. The first and semi-final game was a breath-taking sudden death overtime 32-31 triumph over Manchester, a Huron Valley League team. In the district final the Tiger cagers employed a tight zone defense and con- trolled the backboards during most of the game against Morenci, but the Bulldogs had a hot third quarter and coasted from there to a close finish 34-31 to eliminate Hudson from further competition. 57 Baseball First Row Left to Right: Dick Knapp Bill Malarney, Steve Sweezey, Jack McGill, Bill Ashbeck, Coach Swift Noble.
