A special feature of this building was the courtyard, which was an uncovered space surrounded on four sides by classrooms. The auditorium occupied a prominent place near the center of the building. ln the fall of 1940, this building was destroyed by fire. Immediately, construction was begun on a replace- ment, but in February, 1942, iust weeks before it was to be occupied, it, too, was razed by fire. Students continued to gather at Hudson each morning, then board assigned school buses for Granite Falls, Sawmills, Whitnel, and DavenportCollege in Lenoir. It was occupied in January, 1952, and is still considered modern even by present standards. The first tiled fl oors and pastel walls in Hudson's buildings appeared inthis addition. It stands between the teacherage andthe 1943 structure. These two buildings, located on a six acre tract, comprise the present elementary school. Because every foot of available space is taken up by buildings and playgrounds, it became necessary to find a new lo- cation forthe erection of a senior high building. A sixty- six acre tracton the Lenoir-Hickory by-pass was secured, and plans were made for further expansion. 472 Page ll? fzomeoaminq acfoim 4, 1957 green 20 ihegueen Me main! of hence Zheclawiwpaaemfaizuw mm mum dm mm ,mm 01444 BRENDA HERMAN BETH KIZER PATTY HOLLOMAN DIANA OXFORD g 122 feam DORIS AGNER THERESA CHANDI ER REBECCA CLOER Sponsored by George Puett Sponsored by Don Simmons Sponsored by Ray Adkins PATSY CRUMP BETTY ANN HAIG LER Sponsored by Bobby Saunders Sponsored by Everetre Clark WANDA COX Sponsored by Neil Scruggs Lpnmc-fred My denidft fc-alba!! plaqm NANCY MATHIS Sponsored by Wayne Honeycutt , Y Y JUDY PRICE MITZI ROBERTS JOYCE WALDROP JUDY WOODS Sponsored by Tom Price Sponsored by William Jarvis, Sponsored by Eddie Woodie Sponsored by Paul Bumgarner Manager Page l23 1 M waumecf Student Body President, Monroe Teague, crowns Luna Gueene Homecoming Queen as Drum Mojorette Carolyn Townsend looks on.
