Bailey, have been exceedingly active, working hard to retain the fine reputation the high school has en- joyed for years. ln order to stimulate keen interest and to bring out the acting ability of the members of the society, there have been given from time to time one-act and two-act plays, which have been a prelude followed by longer plays requiring strenuous rehearsals as well as aptitude. The two major plays of the year were Light Competitionu, the Christmas production, and Anne of Green Gables , the spring play. Anne of Green Gables was considered one of the best plays ever enacted by pupils of the school. Not only was it outstanding with its attractive, quaint costumes, but also it was a great financial success. The profit has been set aside for new stage property. The club. newly organized in 1940, has now established itself as a definite part of the extra-curriculum. A membership which began with an even dozen has increased its number to twenty-five. During the year, the library club was fortunate to hear many guest speakers. Among these were Mr. Kaemmerlen, Miss Groves, Miss VVaid, and lNIr. Bailey with his blagic Club. The club members also assisted Miss Chace and bliss Sickles in ar- ranging a miniature circus for Book XVeek which took place in November. A new feature of the club was the Federal Survey of libraries in which the club members played an active part. Each girl was required to Hll out a time sheet for each period that she worked in the library. At the end of each week, these sheets were sent to the library branch of the Education Department in VVashing- ton, D. Page 69 3 MAGIC CLUB The Magic Club was organized under the leadership of Kenneth Bailey in October, 1940. Quoting from the constitution, the club has as its purpose to install and promote interest in the pursuit of magic as a worthwhile hobbyg to afford ample opportunity for the study of its his- tory, presentation, and recreational possibilitiesg and to provide oppor- tunity for the student to express himself magically before sizeable groups. During the year, much magical apparatus has been built, and a number of brief out-of-school presentations have been given. The officers for the year were president, George Vickers: vice-president, VVilliam Shriver: secretary-treasurer, Robert Lyman. MINERAL CLUB A new club has been added to the extra-curricular activity list this year called the Mineral Club. The suggestion for this type of organiza- tion was advanced by Richard Atkins, whose hobby is collecting minerals. This club was organized under the supervision of Robert Schmucker. YVeekly meetings were held for the study of rocks and minerals. The club work was connected in part with the regular courses of chemistry and physics. For the club's use, Mrs. Alfred B. Chace, Mr. Schmucker, and Richard Atkins donated a variety of minerals. The officers were president, Richard Atkins: secretary-treasurer, Alfred Hitchcock. BUTTON CLUB Added to the extra-curricular activities this year, was that organiza- tion called the Button Club under the direction of Miss VVaid. The eleven members of that club studied buttons from every angle. They learned how buttons are manufactured, of what they are made, types of designs, and the historical background connected with many of them. The collections of buttons shown in the hobby show greatly added to that display. The officers for the year were: president, Rose Abitabile: vice-presi- dent, Patricia Hallenbeckg secretary-treasurer, Rose Dejoy.
