The people have the element of surprise . . . ... A tragic and comic two-face: Hero and hoodlum: phantom and gorilla . . . The people learn, unlearn, learn, A builder, a wrecker, a builder again, A juggler of shifting puppets . . . . . . Changing from hammer to bayonet and back To hammer, The hallelujah chorus forever shifting its Star soloists. In the drive of faiths on the wind today The people know: ‘We have come far and we are going farther yet.’ ” But do we know? “In the darkness with a great bundle of grief The people march: ‘Where to? What next? Where to? What next?’ ” Carl Sandburg We are intense and imaginative . . . . . . industrious and creative . . . . . . whimsical and capricious . . . You counseled us in those difficult situations that we’ve en- countered through the course of our school years, and your great willingness to listen was tremend- ously appreciated. The realization that you were behind us all the way, the necessary push that you set forth to make us “hang in there,” and the friendly smile that was always available for us will never be forgotten. Therefore, we, the Class of 1970, dedicate this HERMES to you, Mr. Thomas (Coach Chick) Chickanis. Board of Education J. Bernard Labourr, Superintendent J. W. Juckett R. Heil M. Greenburg 20 W. We tried our best to produce a yearbook that the Seniors would remember and the underclassmen would cite as a prime example. Giving up many afternoons and Saturday mornings to work on HERMES, we never could have made those insidi- ous deadlines without the inspiring guidance of Mr. Gerald Matson and Mr. Robert Dingman. As Editors, we attempted to make this yearbook not only a vivid account of school life, but somewhat a literary work as well. We’ve worked hard and we hope you approve . . . HERMES Editorial Staff This is the vital organization that, in its entirety, produced this yearbook. It was a hard working staff consisting of “typists, croppers, planners, photogra- phers and stampers.” (What a crew!) Nevertheless, the 1970 HERMES Staff would like to wish future staffs good luck. Latin Club is affiliated with the Junior Classical League, a national organization, the purpose of which is to encourage among young people an interest in and appreciation for the civilization, language, literature, and art of ancient Greece and Rome and to give them an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of classical antiquity. This year’s Latin Club also hopes to provide helpful background information to ten of its stu- dents who will be taking part in the Classical Pil- grimage Spring Study Tour to Rome and Sorrento. These students will in return supply much first-hand knowledge to the club about the “Eternal City.” 108 Members: S. Aiken, P. Ashe, M. Bernard, P. Binns, P. Bly, M. Breeyear, B. Broderick. I). By providing an opportunity for selected high school students to serve their school and commun- ity, the Key Club has earned the respect and ad- miration of the many groups and individuals it serves. Its many service projects during this year included a large donation to the March of Dimes, regular help during Bloodmobile visits and ushering at all home basketball games. We sincerely hope that next year’s club upholds the standards that have made the Key Club an outstanding service organization. no Future Teachers of America seeks to introduce interested students to various aspects of teaching and the education of teachers. The year’s program usually includes a day of observation for seniors in a local school of their choice, a trip to a college, discussion between students, teachers, and student teachers, a project in connection with Education Week, and illustrated talks by outside educators. Composed of members of the Student Body, and under the leadership of Vincent Ritorto, the Council is the “voice of the students.” Representatives are chosen from every homeroom to speak out for the improvement of the school. On February 25, Hudson Falls sent a team to compete on WRGB Television's “Answers Please.” This was only the second time that Hudson Falls had appeared on this show. All interested high school students were eligi- ble for the team. These students took a written test and the eight highest scores from this test competed in an ex- citing school assembly. After this assembly, the four team members and one alternate were chosen. They were: JoBette McCann, Ellen Nuffer, Brien Murphy, Gary LaBrum, and Deborah Lewis, alternate. Mr. Gary Gonrick supervised this and again became the team’s advisor. This time Hudson Falls avenged the loss of five years ago as the team tied with Keveny Memorial of Cohoes 170-170. On March 2, Hudson Falls returned to challenge Keveny Memorial for a second time. With twenty seconds left. Hudson Falls trailed 180-170. With less than ten seconds left. The project was enthusiastically supported by the student body and faculty. The Grub Chairmen included Glen Pratt, Terry Rabine, Mary Joan DePalo, and Tim Borden. We were very pleased to present the over $600. accumulated to Mr. Robert Cackener, Chairman of the March of Dimes in our school district. Of this amount, $178. was netted by Key Club through school and basketball collections, and Grub Day resulted in approximately $450. It was a productive (?) and fun day, and there are hopes to do the same in the future. Members: P. Altizio, L. Austin, C. Barot, M. Belisle, I). Boyer, K. Brayton, S. Cain, M. Carlisle, F. Clark, V. Varsity Football We’re No. 1 A lot of people were saying that 1969-70 would be the “Year of The Tigers”, and our football squad was one of the first teams to prove them right. Under the guidance of our coaches, Bill Andrews and “Chick” Chickanis, the Tigers came through with a sparkling 7-0 season. From Greenwich to Johns- town, Hudson Falls was undefeated. Two games that climaxed the season were the Glens Falls and Johnstown games. At Glens Falls we emerged victorious, and for the first time in two years we were able to bring home the “jug”. With the defeat of Johnstown, Hudson Falls earned the title “No. 1”. This game ended our season with pride and a few celebrations. Many thanks to Coach Andrews and Coach Chickanis for taking the time to help our Footballers along a perfect season. 134 Football Row 1: 0. Smith, T. Sexton, R. Yarter, F. Chadwick, R. Daniels, L. Carte. Varsity Basketball We’re No. 1 The 1969-70 Basketball season was the most successful one for the Tigers since the beginning of the decade. The powerful Tigers scored a rolling 17 consecutive wins. The only blemish on their almost-perfect record was in the season finale against a strong Saratoga team. The 1st major challenge for the Tigers was against the favored G. F. team. Exploding from the opening tip off, the Tigers romped to an 81-57 victory as Carte and Luciano combined for 51 markers. When the Tigers ventured forth to a full house at Whitehall, they brought home a hard earned 75-72 overtime victory. With Daniels scoring 26 points and grabbing 25 rebounds, the Tigers annexed their 2nd straight A-division crown over South High. At this print- ing, IT. F. will journey south to Linton trying to capture the title for Class 13 of Section 2. With the return of 8 veterans, the 1970-71 season looks to be most promising for the Tigers. 138 J.V. Undefeated in dual meets, first place in the Queensbury Holiday Festival, first place in the Glen Falls Invitational, and second place in the Northern Conference Tournament, the HUDSON FALLS GRAP- PLERS, under the guidance of Coach “Chick” Chickanis, have truly maintained a high respect from all area schools. Individual honors were won by Joe DePalo, Jim Willis, Craig Fawcett, Pete Schermerhom, Jim Cicone, and Dave Davis, who captured first place in either or all of the following: the Queensbury Holiday Festival, the Glens Falls Invitational, and the Northern Conference Tournament. In March this year the Honor Society made a trip to Williamstown to tour William’s College and see the Clark Museum. Ear- lier in the year, its members nominated Mike Freebern and Debbie Lewis for the annual Asso- ciation of Secondary School Principals Scholarship. They also provided an oppotunity for the faculty and student body to view Debbie Lewis’ slides of her stay in New Zealand as an exchange student.
