HERMES 1969 VOLUME 52 HUDSON FALLS CENTRAL SCHOOL HUDSON FALLS, NEW YORK I DEDICATION When we first entered your class, we ex- pected to find nothing more than another unin- spired teacher. We had heard that you were a good” teacher, but we were totally unpre- pared for your teaching style. There was an air of excitement as you explained the mysteries of science to us, a feeling of revelation as you unveiled the secrets of the atom. We realized that, in order for you to teach this way, you must think of teaching science as much more than just a living. This intense interest in what you teach will always inspire us. Even we, as students who did not have the privilege of learning from you in class, were not left un- touched by your work, the results of which often affected an entire wing of the school. It is for all this and for your constant striving to improve our learning experiences in Hudson Falls that we dedicate this 1969 HERMES to you, Mr. Robert Chatel 2 3 4 SENIORS ■■m m? •;-V m m §£§ si $8 Hi V:- i - I J5 ? The resulting decorations beautifully emphasized the theme, Days of Wine and Roses. The evening was climaxed by the crowning of Nancy Doyle as Queen and Donato Iannucci as King and the royal couple waltzed to the music of Ernie LaRouche. 54 UNDERCLASSMEN P. Altizio K. Arlington H. VARSITY BASEBALL Coach Dick Young’s spirited young stickers showed considerable potential as they secured a second place tie in the Northern Conference’s tough A-division. Two close heartbreaking losses at the hands of South High kept the championship from the Tiger’s grasp. The forthcoming year appears very promising with the return of ten veterans: pitchers Steve Stephens, Don Daniels, and Tony DiChiro; infielders Matt Cronin, Mike Battiste, Tom DeCamilla, and Guy D’Angelico; and outfielders Bill Caprood, Pete Ber- trand, and Cosmo Sciancalepore. 102 J.V. BASEBALL Row 1: J. Monrian, R. McCann, K. Reed, G. Pratt; Row 2: D. Morency, P. Oleary, W. Nichols, S. Joiner, Coach Chickanis. The aggressive J.V.’ers under the competent guidance of Coach Chickanis finished a disappointing fourth in Conference play and broke even overall. However, it was a case where record belied a team’s ability, as the Tiger Cubs suffered numerous bad breaks and close decisions. TENNIS The Tiger tennis team, despite a small turnout, completed the 1968 season with a 3-6 record under the skillful influence of Coach Don Marshall. The fine play of Marc Benack, Jim Levison, Mike Freebern, and Jim Dumas constituted most of the team's efforts. The team looks forward to an improved record this season since only one letterman has been lost. TRACK - 1968 For the fifth straight year the Tiger trackmen of Tony Luciano finished on top of the Northern Conference Dual Meet circuit. Led by two of the best trackmen ever at Hudson Falls, Jack Toole and Bob Slater, the green and white rolled up a 6 and 0 overall mark, extending the H. F. record since 1949 to a phenomenal 135-14-3. New school marks were set by Slater, with 14’ y2 in the pole vault, Toole in the 880 and mile, with 1:57.3 and 4:19.5, and Curt Guardiola in the two-mile, with 10:29.3. Toole, Slater, Frank Rayno, and Phil Belisle won North- ern Conference and Sectional titles and the first three went to the State Meet with Toole finish- ing fifth in the mile. 104 Row 1: C. Led by Curt Guardiola, Phil Belisle, Larry Haskill, Roger Chadwick, Jim Wood, and Bob Maranville. The Tigers also placed second in the Sectionals. Despite a lack of experience, the Tigers earned a commendable record as they registered a hard earned victory over Ticonderoga, and they gave rugged St. Mary’s a fierce battle before losing 7-6. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Guided by Coach Car- penter and Coach West, the Freshman football squad posted its second straight undefeated season. Their 6-0'record led them to a first place finish among freshman teams in the area. 13 SOCCER As the 1968-69 sports season began, Coach War- ren Dunham faced quite a challenge in building a winning soccer team, but with a turnout of over 40 men he produced Varsity and J.V. squads. Led by the seniors, the H.F. hooters posted upsets over es- tablished soccer powers. With the return of half the starters, the Tigers will be definite title contenders next season. Pressure had been mounting toward the climax of a season that had seen the H.F. cagers climb through the standings to win A Division honors with a decisive victory over St. Mary’s Academy. But trailing the B Division winners, Whitehall by 13 points at halftime, a gloomy Tiger walked back to the locker room. Then that Tiger roared. Led by the steals of Mike Battiste, the fast break hoops of Mike Binetti, the great shooting and rebounding of Beefer Daniels and Jim Hartpence, balanced by an outstanding defensive effort by Tom Grow, and the backing of the best bench in the Conference, the green wave overtook a stunned maroon in the final minutes of play and hung on for a much deserved Conference Championship victory. Then the Tigers also broke their Christmas Tournament jinx, which previously denied both the N.C. Championship plus the Glens Falls Christmas Invitational, with victories over the host Indians and SMA in the title game. So, along with the loyal student support they received all year and their 15-3 record, the champs will journey to Linton for the sectional playoff. 117 1968 Basketball HF HF Whitehall . .. . 63 53 St. Mary’s . . . 54 50 Corinth . 42 93 Saratoga .... 63 61 Fort Edward . . ■ ■ 43 48 Queensbury . . 62 87 Granville .... .. 39 94 South High . 46 76 Glens Falls . . . . . 55 61 Glens Falls .. 55 61 Ticonderoga . . . . 29 63 Queensbury . . 54 104 South High . . • • 39 76 Saratoga 46 74 ♦Glens Falls .. . .. 59 69 St. Mary’s ... 53 69 ♦St. Mary’s .... . . 43 54 ♦♦Whitehall . . . 66 68 ♦Christmas Tournament A-B Division I 18 Deak Eag 120 Lins P. Finishing in a second place tie in dual-meet compe- tition, our young aggressive team went on to capture the Northern Conference Tournament Championship, being the first squad other than South High to ever pin this prestigious meet on their list of victories. Individual titles were won by Joe DePalo, Pete Schemerhorn, and Frank Rayno, while Scott Barry, Dave Larrow, and Jim Ciccone captured runner-up spots. Our star wrestlers also were kings of the Queensbury Holiday Tournament, and as eight of twelve weight classes were filled by underclassmen, Hudson Falls can anticipate a wrestling dynasty. 24 Varsity Dual Meet Record Warrensburg 6 H.F 40 Scotia 36 H.F 17 Ticonderoga 16 H.F .... 36 Glens Falls 25 H.F 17 Colonie 30 H.F ....20 Queensbury 19 H.F 25 Whitehall Saratoga 16 21 H.F. . . . But your education is far from complete. It is just beginning. Yesterday’s lectures don’t always apply to tomorrow’s problems. Yesterday the most important thing you learned was how to learn. Tomorrow brings college, the draft, a mortgage, marriage, parenthood, success — or failure. From now on you are playing for real, not for marks on a report card. So to the Class of ’69 we can say this: You can look upon your education as a tough, grinding accomplishment and sit back to ask, “Now where’s my reward?” or you can look upon it as preparation for the uncertain reality which lies ahead. Choose now. The message above has been adapted, with permission, from material provided by Newsweek Magazine. Many graduates of your school now enjoy interest- ing work with the Glens Falls Insurance Company. If you would like to discuss your qualifications with us, please contact the Personnel Division, 291 Glen Street, Glens Falls. DALE VARNEY In politics, like after death, you either go up or down. We, the previous alphabetically listed SENIORS, members of what may have been Hudson Falls' greatest SENIOR class of all time, the CLASS OF '69', bought this page as a tribute to ourselves, our class, and our school. We realize that the eyes of Hudson Falls are upon us and all other SENIORS, as we, each in our own individual way, attempt to make this world a success. We have been inspired and guided by our fellow Hudson Fallonians, both classmates and adults, to such an extent that we feel it only appropriate to pool our meager resources and express our sincere gratitude. We feared that our appreciation might otherwise have passed unheralded. 153 We Eleven, the Pensive Tigers GROWS SERVICE STATION FLOYD'S MARKET 22 Main Street, Hudson Falls, N. Y. PEEPLE'S GARAGE Ext.
