YOLE DEDICATION As we stop by your door ond see you teaching one of your classes, we are aware of your untiring efforts on our behalf, which have left us with a deep appreciation of man's love and ability to render service to others. Your understanding of our problems and the unerring advice in the solving of these problems has been of major importance in making our journey thus far through education an easier and more rewarding one. Our debt to you is manifold; your material assistance as well as your moral guidance can only be repaid in small measure as we dedicate the 1961 Hermes to you, Mr. Yole. 5 THE DOOR TO OUR FUTURE Four years ago a group of students passed through the doors of Hudson Falls Central School to begin what seemed a long four years of learning. Some of those students have left, while others have taken their places. Now, at the end of their senior year, it is time once again for these students to pass through the doors of the school — this time to begin another task. We hope that the experiences which they have had these past years have prepared them for their future roles. We wish them luck and congratulations on their graduation. Here then, leaving our doors, are our seniors. s E N I O R S DONALD ALLEN Boys' Glee Club 9,- High School Choir 10; Junior Prom Dec- oration Committee; Chess and Checkers Club 12. She must have found a solution to the problem, as she was an attendant to the Queen. Other happy couples begin to arrive, and the dance is in full swing. From arrival 'til departure after the last dance, the smiles seen here reflect the mood of the evening. 34 Gilded trees, a sparkling fountain, spring flowers, and a park bench — who could resist such a setting? The time, worry and work which went into our Junior Prom was rewarded when, at the end of the evening, we realized that everyone who attended the dance would long remember the evening they spent at Twilight Time. 35 19 HERMES EDITORS SEATED: G. Department Head Dear Underclassmen, As we are preparing to pass through the doors of our Senior year, we would like to thank you for helping to make our memories of our school days here such memorable ones, for you contributed as much to them as we did ourselves. We'll remember you in future years as we come to the section of our Hermes labled Underclassmen. We shall remember the black and blue marks we received from the hustling eighth graders in A wing; the inquisitive, effervescent fresh- men and our thinking to ourselves, Were we ever like that? (And of course we were); the little Caesars and Cleopatras of the sophomore class as they digest their first Shaksperian play; the juniors, always preparing for the Prom, but never for Monday's math test. We'll remember these things and many more long after we've passed through our doors, and if we were able to leave whatever we wished behind us, it would be the wish that you, as you take our places, could have as nice an undergraduate group as we have to spend your school days with. We may only wait to see what they hold for us. Sarah Jane Blair has already passed through the greatest and most blessed doors of all. We, the class of 1961, know that we have lost a gentle friend. Linda Munoff and Dayle Ryder 57 If you glance through the doors of some of our classrooms, you will catch a glimpse of the primary function of our school in progress. Here we gain the knowledge and understanding of our world and our place in it. Each book, each class, and especially each teacher that we have brings us a step nearer the door through which we must soon pass — into society and new responsibilities. Our curriculum provides not only an excellent scholastic program, but also complete vocational training in the fields of business, agricul- ture, auto mechanics, woodworking, beauty culture and homemaking. Whatever one's plans for his future may be, he can receive the nec- essary preparation for his vocation here in Hudson Falls Central. c u R R I C U L U M Donna Johnson! Although the room we enter may be the same one which we dreaded entering two hours earlier, it now represents the chance to make our studies work for us in certain clubs and to enjoy our favorite pasttimes in others. Our school provides a varied program of extra-curricular activities to help us become more well-rounded individuals,- these organizations give us the opportunity to develop an interest in and knowledge of new fields as well as to develop skills in activities with which we are already associated. Our activities have provided us with many hours of enjoyment and satisfaction. 67 A C T I V I T I E S KEY CLUB FRONT ROW: D. Vormette, R. Karig, G. Van Aer- nem. SECOND ROW: W. Troueber, W. During the past year, if one were to look either into the gym or out onto the athletic field, he coula have seen his school's athletic teams hard at practice. This practice led to seasonal victory in several sports. The time and work of both the teams and the coaches was rewarded. Hudson Falls Central High scored another victory in the field of sports which too often goes unrecognized. Although our first thoughts concerning a game or meet are usually, What was the score? we should not overlook two equally important facets of the game: 1. did the team show good teamwork, and 2. did Hudson Falls fans exhibit sportsmanship. Fortunately we can say yes to both these questions. It is as easy to be a good sport when our team is ahead as it is to pass the ball to a teammate when there is no danger of losing the game. But what happens when we are behind and the referee calls a penalty or a foul? What happens when the pressure is on and time is starting to run out? We know that these factors can lead to poor sportsmanship on our part and hogging the ball by the fellow who thinks he is the only one who can score the extra points. This year both the sportsmanship and team work have been outstand- ingly good, even during hard to take losing streaks. It's been a good year for sports and sportsmanship. THAT’S THE SPIRIT GALS ... GET UP STEAM! Barb, Virginia, and Fran with our banner, a familiar sight to sport fans. It is difficult to decide whether the enthusiasm of our cheerleaders inspired our boys to fight their hardest this season or the fine playing of the Tigers encouraged the cheer- leaders. It could well be a combination of the two. Our athletic teams made a fine showing this past season, and these gals added a great deal to the color and excite- ment of the contests. This was accomplished despite the fact that the Tigers began the season with approximately forty-five inexperienced turnouts. The Tigers were sparked by the fine outside running of backs Jim Carpenter and Jim Steele, with line-smash- ing Harold Steele running out of the fullback slot. The remaining key position was taken by Bill Bennet. Of course a team could do nothing without a fine coaching staff. The team members will tell you that we have the best possible. Head Coach Heindorf has been the drive behind many title teams. He has the knack for getting results and admiration at the same time, which is quite a feat. Ned Jefferies as backfteld and offensive coach and Tony Luciano on line were responsible for the strong defense which won our championship for us. Coaches Young and Chickanis led the J.V.'s to a four and one season. Three cheers for our coaches! FRONT ROW: B. Davies. D. Pelkey, J. Forgozzi. T. Smith. SECOND ROW: W. Gregoire, J. Pecue, M. They have gained Both the Northern Conference Title and a bid for the Sectionals which will begin March 10th. To date, the Tigers under the coaching of Tony Luciano, have defeated every Con- ference team once and are well into the second round of play. The sectional bid was decided before a sold out gym in Hudson Falls on February 10th, with the 54—39 victory over Glens Falls. The J.V. squad, under the guidance of Coach Chickanis is having a slower season than usual, but they had their taste of glory when they beat the Glens Falls Five for the first time in four years. These boys have developed the desire to become good varsity players in the future. The season began with a hard-earned victory over Whitehall and ended in defeat at the hands of Corinth. The Tigers ended the season with an overall record of four wins and eight losses, and a conference record of two wins and five losses. This year the boys will be out once again under the able coaching of Coach Chickanis, striving to improve last year's tally. With the return of veterans LaPan, Pat- ten, Nelson and Hunsperger and the addition of several capable new men, this season should prove more profitable. The Tigers will certainly be out there trying. 96 TENNIS TEAM ’60 FRONT ROW: James Brown. SECOND ROW: John Huckle. THIRD ROW: Alan Forrest, Cooch Thompson. FOURTH ROW: Wallace Balcom. FIFTH ROW: Paul Chapman, Terrance Turner, William Troeber, Sam Wicks, Jeff Bogart. TENNIS TEAM SCORES HIGH IN CONFERENCE PLAY Last spring, the net men of Hudson Falls could be seen hard at practice under the experienced and watchful eye of Coach Glen Thompson. Led by such outstanding players as John Huckle, Alan Forrest, Jim Brown and Jeff Bogart, the tennis team en- joyed a winning season as they compiled a Northern Conference record of five wins and three losses. This spring, Balcom, Chapman, Troeber and Wicks will return to the courts, along with the new members of the team. We hope that once again Hudson Falls Central will produce a tennis team to watch for. 97 TRACK TEAM -’60 FRONT ROW: D. Giles, Coach Luciano. SECOND ROW: D. Dashnaw, J. Powhida, W. Bennett, L. The Hudson Falls Track Team had a victorious season last spring. Our boys won eight out of nine track meets, the Northern Conference Track Meet, the Glens Falls Invitational Meet and the Class B, Section II Championship. This spring our squad will be composed of nearly the same men which formed last year's unbeatable team. Jim Michelucci and John Wilbur will concentrate on the one mile events, Jim Car- penter the 100 yard dash, and Jim and Harold Steele will specialize in the 440 and 220, respectively. Dick Rourke will be striving to break his own high jump record of six feet. The Tigers racked up a neat fifty eight points in the Northern Conference Meet. In yet another display, Hudson Falls ran their score up to ninety one points as compared with the second place total of twenty eight points. Coach Luciano certainly has good reason to be proud of last year's team, and will be working with his men again this spring, trying to maintain the honors won last season. 98 99 He looks determined, Jim. As we look through these glass doorways of the First National Bank of Hudson Falls, we think of all the merchants who have helped us make this Hermes a success. Without the money received from their advertisements, our funds with which to work would be limited. In order to produce a yearbook of superior quality, a tremendous amount of money is needed. You, the businessmen of this and neighbor- ing Communities are the ones who supply us with the lion's share of this income. All of the factors which make this book one in which we may be proud are made possible through your generosity. In return, we thank you for your cooperation and hope that you will be repaid through the advertisements which you purchased. 0 u R A D V E R T 1 S E R S 1961 BOOSTERS Mildred H. Griffin, Raymond E. Heil. President of the Board; Bertram J. Dube, Clerk; Sylvester Sullivan. 126 WE EXPRESS OUR GRATITUDE Our Board of Education has now completed plans to provide for additional expansion in our school system. This has been achieved by the passing of a controversial bond issue by the voters of this school district. The Board and several Citizens' Committees fought what at times seemed a losing battle as the opposition to the issue became stronger. After several open debates on the needs of the recommendations, the voters were convinced of the necessity of passing the issue. Briefly, the bond issue provides for: 1. Additional cafeteria ond classrooms for the Junior-Senior High School. 2. The old Margaret Murphy School section which was erected in 1865 and is now considered to be unsafe and inefficient to operate, is to be renovated. 3. Additional classrooms will be added to the Maple Street and Moss Street Schools. 4. The Number Nine School will receive two classrooms, a principal's office, and an all-purpose room which will serve as cafeteria, auditorium and gymnasium. Those most directly responsible for the acceptance by the voters of the bond issue are the Board of Education, members of the Citizens' Committees, and members of the high school faculty. We would also like to express our thanks to Ralph Romano, vice- president of the WWSC radio station. Miss Mason, reporter for the Post Star, Mrs. Cooper Rhodes, who organized a group of women for the purpose of eliciting public opinion and revealing the story to the citizens, and the numerous members of the community who worked on this campaign. The Class of 61 salutes all who devoted their time to this issue, which has helped unlock the door to future knowledge. 127 DOORWAYS TO LEARNING . ..
