Jfudsan glIffS ,New Vlffk Is the test that bad, Mr. Kelly? We didn't know you liked to swim, Mr. Kelly You aren't facing defeat are you, Mr. Kelly? Mr. Kelly poses with his wife and daughter, Nancy. We ffrflfzvr Throughout our high school years we have encountered many personalities who have helped mold our lives and whom we will never forget. Foremost in many of our memories, however, will be one who has guided and advised us through- out our last year at H.F.HIS. He has instilled in us all a sense of responsibility, integrity, and given us a desire to take an intelligent part in world affairs. In addition he has spent many hours as our class advisor helping us reach the many decisions We have been faced with before entering the world as adults. For all this, Mr. Kelly, we dedicate the 1960 HERMES to you as a small tribute of our appreciation. 5 1 -silall i ll l -WMM? One of the things most familiar to all of us at l'l.F.l-l.S. is the Hudson River along whose banks our town was established. Because it is so familiar to us, we have chosen it as the theme of our 1960 HERMES and charac- terized it as the Stream of Knowledge. Lake Tear of the Clouds, the beginning of the river, high in the Adiron- dacks symbolizes our class at the start of our freshman year four years ago. During these four years, we- moved down the river guided by the willing faculty. As the river widens so does our knowledge until at last we reach the mouth of the river and the end of our high school education. Now, as we leave the mouth of the river and enter the ocean of adult life, we look back on our trip as the most worthwhile venture of our lives. ,fri A fi. 3 'H' ,gi E, ,dh Wwwsmsff if i L 3 'iii 5 , E :Qu .IQ- mi 1 f, fm ,, v 3 K fx .vi asm :am A -2.-:a 1 yfi ff .vhwgzL:s,Afef'Q2'Ws:wi?12i' S 3 A M. As June 1960 grows nearer, we all find ourselves reviewing the happy memories and accomplishments of our four years in high school. Although we will be graduating soon, we feel that we should share this, our past, with others. In September of '56 we took our places in the student body as the freshman class. It wasn't long before we acquired fame throughout the halls as the 'froamersf' An important task was soon put before us--election of class officers. Capable, responsible leaders were chosen to guide us through our first year in high school. Melanie Brom- ley proved to be an excellent president as did Natalie LaPoint, vice-president, Bob Carpenter, secretaryg and Bob Pratt, treasurer. The officers along with several committees organized our Freshman Frolic which was enjoyed by many upperclassmen as well as the freshmen. The election of Student Council put Terry Turner in the spotlight as treasurer. Having had a year of experience, we entered our sophomore year a little less frightened. We again elected com- petent officers: Jeff Bogart, presidentg Ann Butterfield, vice-presidentg Pat Bailey, secretaryg and Bob Carpenter, treasurer. In keeping with the tradition of the school we presented the f'Soph Hop. We were allowed to hold this big event in the new gym which was decorated to the theme of Around the World in Eighty Days. Music was provided by the Stompers. Student Council elections again drew near and Terry Turner was once more elected- this time as secretary. Our Junior year meant more activities and work for us. This didn't worry us, however, because we had respon- sible leaders. We elected Linda McKernon to represent our class as president, Terry Turner was our vice-president, Joanne Perkins became our secretary, and Bob Van Aernem filled the treasureris position. We hold the honor of being the first class to change the class rings since 1949. Our prom proved a big success and brought the largest attendance of any preceding prom. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Ann Butterfield and Evan Neff as king and queen. Bob Carpenter represented us as vice-president of Student Council, Evan Neff attended Boys' State and Mike Peterson represented our school at the United Nations Pilgrimage. Nearing the end of our journey through high school we now find ourselves as stately seniors. Our president, Evan Neff, vice-president, Linda lVlcKernon5 secretary, Dave Barber, and treasurer, Pat Blinn, have been efficient respon- sible leaders of our class. Under their capable leadership, we presented the Senior Ball. Joanne Perkins was chosen to receive the DAR Award while Bill Butterfield filled the all-important position as president of Student Council. We feel that our four years at H.F.H.S. have been profitable ones filled with many lasting memories. 27 I MOST ATHLETIC WITTIEST Sue Malan, Terry Turner BEST DRESSED Pat Bailey, Dave Barber Linda lVlcKern0n, George Mayotte Serzirfr BEST ALL-AROUND MOST MUSICAL Linda Nassivera, Bill Butterfield C9-thie Nifleslillgv Tony SiU1i011C MOST INTELLECTUAL MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Judy Cornell, Alan Forrest Joanne Perkins, Jeff Bogart Zzvnriies MOST POPULAR Ann Butterfield, Evan Neff 1 MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT MOST ATTRACTIVE Margaret Bombard, Robert Van Aernem Bob Carpenter, Noreen Mahan 9 A d am ni dn I 5 f I' H I I 17 lfl ma- ' N4 FRE VQW1, Q Q 1., W ,Q w 1 w I we yi 1 1' 2 - L may 3 3 i?,Sf.s,L 'QI ,walk ? Our first duty was to elect the treasurer of Student Councilg Jim Carpenter was our choice. The class was guided by its officers under the leadership of the president, Dottie Johnson. F rom Me to You was the theme of the F rosh F rolic held in February at the Margaret Murphy School. Cupid and heart decorations accented the theme of the dance which still brings pleasant memories to all who attended. Liz Haskins won a plaque in a national essay contest, and Marsha Jones represented us in two productions of the Dramatics Club. The Class of '61 ivas respected for its spirit and participation in all activities. On Moving-Up Day, Carolyn Finger led us in a spirited rendition of Sugartime,' as the class assumed its new status as sophomores. Ben Baudin headed the class as president, and Jim Carpenter was elected secretary of Student Council. The Class of '61 once more exhibited its dynamic personality by gaining prominence in the scholastic, athletic, and social fields. The Soph Hop was held at the Junior-Senior High School. Fairy tale characters and settings highlighted the mys- tical, magical qualities of Dreamland, our theme. While visions of sugar plums danced in our headsf' we mistily dreamed of our Junior Year. As juniors we were privileged to select our own Committee of Ten. For the third consecutive year, Jim Carpen- ter was elected to Student Council this time as vice-president. The class offices went to Ben Baudin, president, Jim Michelucci, vice-president, Paul Chapman, secretary, and Barb Lemery, treasurer. This was the year to show our mettle! Sports, music, majorettes, and cheerleading became our exclusive domain. We were now pressing the Senior Class for scholastic honors. What finer way to end a glorious year than a successful Junior Prom? The Month of May is best remembered as the Month the Junior Class 'acame of agevg our dance is only an indication of what to expect of us when we become seniors. Scholarship and maturity are our goals as we anxiously await our senior year. 42 BOTTOM ROW, left to right: L. Chadwickg C. Bollmang A. Bakerg M. Camerong -G. Caracciolog M. Balfourg A. Beldeng D. Because we were in high school, all our work was fun. The first thing we did was elect George Van Aernam treasurer of Student Council. Our hard working class officers were led by Judy Taylor, president. The first big event of the year was our Freshman Frolic held October 24 in the Margaret Murphy School. The theme, 6'Autumn Silhouettesf' was carried out in decorations of autumn leaves, flowers, and dancing silhouettes. The dance proved successful, and everyone had fun. Mary Ann Cardinal was chosen actress of the year, and Synthia Woodcock won first prize in a national essay contest. Moving-Up Day always highlights the end of the school year. On this day our class took top honors, our banner was chosen as the Hbestf, Getting off on the right foot for our second year we elected Judy Taylor, president, Sam Wicks, vice-presidentg Peter Patten, secretary, and Barbara Maxon, treasurer. The theme of the soph hop was Deep Purple. The decorations included a huge white heart with purple streamers which was suspended from the ceiling. Lavender lights were played upon the heart to further accent the theme. The beautiful setting and pleasant music made the dance a success. Several members of the class play varsity sports with distinction. We are looking forward to the next two years in high school in the hope that they will be as wonderful as the first two. This seemed an impossible challenge at the time, but proved to be the spur that was needed to carry the team to victory. Football 'practice started during a sweltering week in early September with about sixty boys answering the first call. By the end of the first week it was evident which boys had the makings of sturdy football players. After successful scrimmages against Port Henry and Fort Edward, Hudson was ,ready to roll, The first scheduled game was at Ticonderoga. After the long ride, the team completely outplayed their opponents and won by a 19-0 SCOTC- The following week the squad traveled to Corinth for a night game. At Corinth a surprisingly stubborn defensive game was VIEIPIYCC1, but OUT forces were ready for the occasion and won 14--0. A rock ribbed defense, along with a seventy yard touchdown by erry Turner stood out' for the Tigers. As the victory wagon began to roll the team next smothered Whitehall 40-0 and Granville 40-7. In both g2fm6S the passing of Bob Pratt and the running of George Mayotte spearheaded the offense, while the defensive line of Neff, Bardxn, Fitzgerald, Henderson and Bob Carpenter kept our foes from the goal line. As the momentum of the schedule picked up, the team' prepared for the always tough St. Mary's game. Playing before a capacity crowd the Tigers once more were victorious, this time by an I8-6 margin. Defense again sparkled in this key win. The next week South High was defeated 29-0 by the rampaging Tigers. Pratt's passing to ends Fred Ross and Jim Carpenter was sharpg the fine defensive work of Butterfield, VanAernem, Cronkhite, and Lathem also stood out. Glens Falls was the last hurdle to overcome, and the team's Splrlt Soared .to a new peak. The Tigers hadn't beaten Glens Falls in seven years-this was the game to win. The final score of this iapofilal 1?IillTl13t1CC Day game was 38-0. in favor of Hudson Falls, and the Tigers were undefeated Northern Conference Champs! Again Bob alra t, ekllnd bthe excellent protection of the offensive line led by Pete Marine, was terrific with his passesg but Turner'and Mayotte Fsod sgar e y scoring five touchdowns between them. The defensive team led by an alert secondary of Bob VanAernem, Bill Butterfield, .ff OSS and .lim Carpenter was magmficent in holding the Glens Falls Indians within their own fifth yard line. This was a fitting finish to a tremendous season. C iltlgqgh il fllio team effort was necessary, everyone must realize that a large part of the credit belongs to the team coaches. The team started the season by splitting two non-league games, defeating Warrensburg, and losing to Mechanicville in a close game. The next week in -the team's first conference encounter they defeated Granville 53-51 in an overtime thriller. Bill Butterfield was the hero- with a sudden death basket that brought victory. After that, the team defeated Corinth and South High by large margins, but fell again to Mechanicville, this time by 58-48 score. Continuing our winning ways in the conference, the Tigers easily defeated Fort Edward and Whitehall on sucessive weeks. At this point our team possessed a 5-0 record in conference action, this was identical to the record of our next foe, Glens Falls. Playing before a full house in our gym, the team was defeated by a score of 49-40 in a very well played game. Following this disappointment, St. Mary's and Granville were defeated by scores of 59-43 and 69-45 respectively. Glens Falls was next, and this time the Tigers fell by a 46-38 score. Picking up again the team defeated Warrensburg, Corinth, South High and Fort Edward to bring our conference record to a respectable 12 wins and 2 defeats. With only two games remaining to be played on the 1959-1960 season, this year will definitely be a success as Hudson Falls will be solidly stationed in second place. Our Junior Varsity team under the guidance of Coach Thomas Chickanis had a very sucessful seasong they have lost only three games to date. The I. After a dismal season in 1959, our baseball tea1n is looking forward to improving on our record of last year. This year under Coach Chickanis, our veteran squad should be in the running for league honors. Last season we finished with a record of four wins and sixdefeats. We started the season in brilliant fashion by winning our first three games. In the first game at Fort Edward we defeated the highly regarded Flying Forts, 9-2. The next week, Whitehall fell 6-41 as Don Cronkhite hurled a one-hitter. In continuing our winning ways we next took on exciting 3-2 game from Corinth.
