Jtudson Jails Central School Jiudscn Mis, flew ork Many events of this world often change the course of life and the opportunities that life has to offer, but these changes have not kept the CLASS OF ’59 from graduating in the fourth year of our new school’s” existence. We are taking memories with us, but our written ones are left in the metal box behind the school’s cornerstone for posterity. In the future, when we are old and gray, we will think back to the times we had at H.F.S. and then take the old yearbook from the shelf and reminisce . . . Dedication It seems only yesterday that we heard Mrs. Sonn say, Look at all the enthusiasm. Every- one wants to give his book report today.” Her jolly laugh, quick wit and candid manner has made her a favorite with us all. Thank you, Mrs. Sonn, for your interesting classes, the untiring energy you gave to junior Joltings and Green Echo and most of all, for your far-reaching personality. Contents faculty....... Under the leadership of our officers, we sponsored a Sadie Hawkins dance and later a Freshman Frolic, which will never be forgotten. Our activities were made more outstanding by the athletic abilities of Janice Niemer, which led her to win the Girls' Tennis Tournament, a feat rarely accomplished by a freshman. Dave Digamus was our first representative in Student Council when he was elected treasurer. In our sophomore year we chose for our class officers: Marie Michelucci, president; Gerry Stockman, vice- president; David LaPoint, secretary; and Tony Piscitelli, treasurer. Marilyn Earl took her place in Student Council as secretary. Our Soph Hop proved to be one of the best. The gym was gaily decorated to the theme of Autumn Leaves.” It was at this dance that Judy Bronk and Ernest Hunsperger were crowned Mr. and Miss Holiday by our officers, Marie and Gerry. During our year as gay young sophomores, the National Honor Society was es: tablished in our school. We, the class of '59, are proud to say that we hold the largest membership in this organiza- tion. Soon our high school days were half over. However, we were eagerly looking forward to our year as Jolly Juniors. During our junior year in high school, Marie Michelucci took her position as vice-president of Student Council. Don Lewis was elected president of our class; Tony Piscitelli, vice-president; David LaPoint, secretary; and John Day, treasurer. For our Prom the gym was decorated to the theme of Stairway to the Stars.” The moment arrived when Marie Michelucci and Bill Collins were crowned as monarchs for the evening. Well, the fall of '58 finally arrived. We entered high school this year as Grand Old Seniors. We realized that we would soon be facing the cold, cold, world but that didn’t stop our activities. Marie Michelucci again took her place in Student Council, only this year she moved to the top and took the office of president. For class officers in our senior year we elected: Ellen Ninesling, president; David LaPoint, vice-president; Judy Davis, secretary; and Gerry Stockman, treasurer. Under the capable leadership of our officers, we put on a Senior Ball which will long be remembered at Hudson Falls High School. 18 Ellen Beth Ninesling Band 1, 2, 3, 4; Orchestra 1, 2, 3, 4; Choir 1, 2, 3, 4; Pep Club 1; Green Echo 1; French Club 3; Junior Scholarship 3; Hermes Photography Editor 4; Girls’ Hi-Y 4; Senior Class President; Green Echo 4; Ensemble 3, 4. The blue sky of the gym was covered with sparkling stars that made our eyes shine. On one wall was a castle covered with glittering stars. Around the gym were various garden scenes with beautifully decorated flower carts. In one corner there was a star suspended from the sky which had stairs leading to it. This completed our decorations as we carried out the theme of Stairway to the Stars.” Chairman of our decorations was the ca- pable Anne Solenski. Our first star to take her place on the royal throne was Enid Bollman escorted by Norman Cardinal. Next came Ruth Ann Brown who was escorted by Tom Wilcox. Then Nancy Taylor stepped out of the star escorted by Jeff Davis. Nancy Remsen came next with her partner Bill Powhida, and Sue Canti- ello escorted by Lester Lee. Antionette Catone and Brian Daniels were the next couple to take their place on the throne. Judy Davis escorted by Peter Clear was next in the line of attendants. Bonnie Floyd and her escort Jerry Stockman then took their position on the throne. At last it came! The coronation of Miss Marie Michelucci as queen and Bill Collins as king. Nancylee Monroe and William Finger conducted the crowning, which was witnessed by many parents and friends. This was indeed a very happy moment for our lucky couple. The queen and her attendants were attired in gowns of various colors and styles. Marie and her court carried colonial bouquets. Everyone danced to the music of Chris Discenza until the magic hour of one o'clock. Our chaperones, Mr. and Mrs. Michelucci, Mr. and Mrs. Solenski, Mr. and Mrs. LaBourr, Mr. and Mrs. Catone, Mrs. Bollman, Miss Dolan, Mrs. Chartier, and Mr. Struth couldn't have done a better job for us. We, the class of '59, will never forget this memorable evening of May 2 as a good time was had by all. 39 Class Officers Left to right: B. Van Aernmen, L. McKernon, T. Turner I Perkins. J {juniors In the fall of ’56, we entered high school as pea green freshmen. Although this was our first year in high school, we were all pretty well-known as the roamers. Our first big task was to elect capable, responsible leaders to be our class officers. We did just that by electing Melanie Bromley, president; Natalie LaPoint, vice-president; Bob Carpenter, secretary; and Bob Pratt, treasurer. Our officers and their committees put their heads together and organized one of the most successful Freshman Frolics in Hudson Falls history. Terry Turner was our first representative to Student Council when he was elected treasurer. When Moving Up Day came along, we again found ourselves in the spotlight. This time we had moved up to the position of gay young sophomores. We entered into our sophomore year just as enthusiastically as we did our freshman year. Election time again rolled around, and we again chose good school leaders to be our class officers. Jeff Bogart was elected as president. Bob Carpenter moved to the position of vice-president, Pat Bailey was our secretary, and Ann Butterfield took the position of treasurer. On November 15 our Sophomore Class put on a hop that will long be remembered. The new gym was decorated to the theme of Around the World in 80 Days. A huge crowd enjoyed the top tunes played b ythe Stompers. Terry Turner was again elected into Student Council, this time filling the position of secre- tary. Our last, but memorable, job was the organizing and planning for Class Day. Although we won no honors, we were a proud class on this special day. As we took our places as Jolly Juniors, we had many good memories and times to look back upon. When we entered school this fall as juniors, we realized all the work that was ahead of us. For president of our class this year our choice was Linda McKernon, for vice-president we chose Terry Turner, Joanne Perkins was elected secretary, and Bob Van Aernem was our treasurer. Bob Carpenter was elected to the position of vice- president of Student Council. Although our class officers have just taken office, we are sure that our Junior Prom will be another success. 42 First row, left to right: S. Brayman, P. Blinn, R. Bigelow, A. Butterfield, E. However, we carried out our activities as if we had been around for years. We started the year by electing Jim Carpenter to the position of Student Council treasurer. We then had to elect hard-working, responsible class officers. Our choice for presi- dent was Dorothy Johnson; Benjamin Bardin became our vice-president; Sharon Grant, secretary; and Jim Miche- lucci was our treasurer. Under their leadership our class held our Freshman Frolic on February 6 at the Margaret M. Murphy School. The cafetorium was decorated in hearts and cupids in accordance with the theme, From Me to You. It was a most successful dance and a good time was had by all. In dramatics, Marsha Jones distinguished herself by being chosen for a part in each of the two productions put on by the Dramatics Club. Elizabeth Haskins obtained prominence by winning a plaque in a national essay contest. As our freshman year drew to a close, we began to prepare for Moving Up Day. With petite little Carolyn I-inger as our song leader, our class looked really sharp, singing to the tune of Sugartime.” We felt mighty proud to move up to the position of sophomores on this day. Our second year ot high school started off with a bang when we elected Ben Bardin as our class president. Jim Michelucci moved up to the position of vice-president; Elizabeth Haskins, secretary; and Charles Caputo became our treasurer. Our Soph Hop proved to be one of the best ever. Many of our boys have excelled in the field of sports. This year we have several members of our class on the varsity football and basketball teams. We, the sophomore class, feel that if our last three years of high school are as successful as the first, we will accomplish many feats. 46 First row, left to right: G. Carracciola, M. Cameron. S. CONNOLLY Senior player Under a new coach, Mr. Baker, the baseball team had an even mark in conference play with three wins and three losses. In non-league play the squad was less fortunate with a log of one victory and five setbacks. How- ever, it should be noted here that two of those defeats were by the slim margin of two runs. With a couple of breaks, the overall record might have been 6-6. Against South High we broke even, winning 3-1 in league play and losing 5-9. The Tigers took both tilts with Whitehall by 3-2 and 15-5 counts. Granville, St. Mary's Academy and Glens Falls, the three 1958 powers of the Northern Conference, all had clean slates against Hudson Falls. Granville won 16-2, and eased by 3-1 in the other affair. St. Mary's shut us out 6-0 and took a close one 6-4. Glens Falls triumphed by 5-1 and 8-2. In the conference game with Fort Edward, we won a squeaker 4-3; but we also lost to the Forts 7-0. Under a new' coach, Mr. Chichanis, the baseball team will be looking forward to spring practice in 59. 81 Zrack Fir si row, left to right: T. Simione, J. Carella, R. Wood, B. Holley, B. Gary, D. The 1958 track team, under the experienced coaching eye of Tony Luciano, was again one of the best in the area. It didn’t lose a single dual meet all year, beating Glens Falls twice, South Glens Falls and Saratoga. Granville played the squad to a tie in Hudson Falls’ other dual track meet. Our team’s only tri meet of the season pitted the Green and White against South High and Whitehall. The Tigers placed second behind South High. In the Washington County meet at Granville, our boys lost out to Granville in a contest which wasn’t decided until the final event was over. At the Glens Falls Invitational, Hudson Falls placed third behind Glens Falls and South High. We placed sixth in the sectional at Johnstown. 82 Varsity Basketball First row. left to right: D. Although well over one-half of last year's team had either graduated or left Hudson Falls, Coach Luciano put together a powerful team for the 1958-59 season. Two non-league warm-ups gave fans an idea of what to look for. Tony’s Tigers had no trouble with Warrensburg, winning by a 75-35 score. An impressive Mechanicville team gave the boys a hard fight before bowing 68-58. Corinth or South High couldn’t solve the Hudson Falls attack as our team won 71-50 and 89-43 respectively. Down at Fort Edward another close, hard fought game took place with the Tigers winning 71-63. Whitehall was next on the schedule to be followed by Granville, both home games. The Green and White grabbed these by respec- tive 68-36 and 56-44 successes. The following two games had been looked forward to by Hudson Falls rooters since the season opened. The St. Mary's game, played before a sold out Hudson Falls gym, was a see-saw struggle most of the way. When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard read, Hudson Falls 66—St. Mary’s Academy 61. The next battle, played before another full house on Glens Falls' Sherman Avenue Court, turned out to be a disappointment. Ahead at half time by four points, the Tigers went down 70-62 with the Indians exploding in the third period. The final encoun- ter of the season, however, will find Glens Falls at Hudson Falls, with the Green Wave looking for revenge. At Granville the ensuing Friday, our team rebounded by triumphing over that team by ten points, 60-50. Despite the final score, it was a close game, with Hudson Falls pulling away at the end. The attendance and support given the team by both students and adults has been tremendous. At Glens Falls, fans braved a snowstorm and slippery driving conditions to help fill that gym. Even at Granville, a good distance away, a large group of Hudson Falls rooters cheered as long and as loud as the local Granville partisans. The team has appreciated this enthusiasm. 83 Bedlam at the score table. Get that ball, Guy! Strategy and relaxation. Dave dribbles in under the basket. Suspense” Block that shot! Last fall, when we came back to school, most of our gym classes were held outside in the parking lot area. Cageball seemed to be the most popular sport then. We girls had a lot of fun trying to get this overgrown volleyball over the net. Sometimes it would take five or six of us to ac- complish this task. Although cageball is a popular outdoor sport, tennis is edging up to first place. This past year, Miss Dwyer began to show willing beginners how to play the game. Girls even brought their own tennis rackets. In the spring a tennis tournament was held for those interested. The number of enthusiastic participants was so great that these tournaments will probably be- come an annual event at our school. When speaking of the outdoor sports, we must not forget to mention softball. Every girl looks forward to spring when she can play softball on her own class team. Other outdoor sports which appealed to the remainder of the girls include tether ball, croquet, horseshoes, and kick ball. Some girls even attempted to walk on the stilts or jump on the pogo sticks. As the winter months rolled around, gym classes were held in our gym. To get us limbered up for basketball, Miss Dwyer originated calisthenics for her classes. This year she introduced us to the woodwands and Indian clubs. Occasional moans and groans of sore muscles were heard. After a few weeks of calisthenics, basketball finally began. This is what most girls had been waiting for. Teams were organized, and games were played to help decide which team would represent each gym class in the after-school play-offs. After a representative had been chosen from each class, these teams played each other for the championship of inter-gym basketball. Inter-class basketball, which seemed to be the favorite among the girls, then began. It has always been exciting to see if the underclassmen can beat the mighty seniors. Miss Dwyer supervised a basketball play day and sports day at Glens Falls High School, in which twelve Hudson Falls girls participated. As the basketball season came to a close, the ropes and rings were let down and the mats were taken out. We were prepar- ing for stunts, tumbling, and apparatus work. Although only a few of us have the ability to turn cartwheels and climb ropes, we all enjoy this part of the gym class. This activity rates second to swimming in physical value. Other winter activities included ballroom and square-dancing. Mixed gym classes were held once a week so that the boys could participate. As Miss Dwyer says, I feel that there is fine co-operation and wholesome interest among my students. 89 English-CompositioH, Citer at ure, grammar using the touiw ; world geography Mr. Peachman, ' niaue, discusses interested in 8th grade history students are their work. desk looks neater World and American Mistory Mr. Miller is keeping his class busy.
