THE SENIOR CLASS Presents the 1958 Hermes Volume 42 PRINCIPAL —J. BERNARD LABOURR HUDSON FALLS, NEW YORK l Foreword At the start of our high school career, we were pea-green freshmen with a lot to learn. When we be- came gay young sophomores, fun and good times were abundant. We really outdid ourselves in every project we worked on as jolly juniors. Finally as grand old seniors we achieved success in the fields of scholarship, music and sports. We sincerely hope that our H. F. Tigers will show to you the unforgetable memories we have gained throughout our school years. We also hope that you, the reader, receive as much enjoyment from this Hermes' as wc have had in presenting it to you. DEDICATION We are proud to dedicate our 1958 Hermes to Alfred “Doc” Messier. Anyone who attended the junior high building, which is now torn down, will remember “Doc” as a little energetic custodian who had a joke or a “Hi” for every student. He is now working at another school in our system, and I’m sure that the students there appreciate him just as much as we did. Fifteen years of service have been given by him to our schools, and he will never be forgotten by us. We students who knew him so well are happy to dedicate this collection of our high school memories to him. CLASS HISTORY Our class started out on its high school career in two different buildings. Even though we were divided during the school day, we worked to- gether to make our class one that would be re- membered. The ninth graders in the junior high building made a prize winning banner for moving up day that year while the ninth graders in the senior high wrote the lyrics for a prize winning song. We renewed the custom of having a Fresh- man Frolic and used an orchestra composed of boys from our school. We may have been pea- green freshmen, but that didn’t stop us from making a mark on the life of the high school. We really got going in our sophomore year under the leadership of President, John Hinchliflfe; vice-president, Dorothy Herzog; secretary, Martha Howe, and treasurer, Pat Steele. Bella Porlier and Leon Richards were crowned Mr. and Miss Holiday at our Soph Hop. That sophomore year went by so fast! Before we realized it, we were juniors. The junior prom, that all the girls in our class had been dreaming of since they could remember, was everything they had hoped for. The dance itself was fabulous, but there were twice as many memories involved in the planning and decorating for it. Doris Brownlee, our decoration chairman, created the plans for a Japanese fairyland. The decorations filled our huge gym, and made us feel “Younger Than Springtime”, which was our theme. Petite Nancylee Monroe and her escort, Bill Finger, will especially remember this night as “Nanc” was crowned Queen of the Junior Prom. Our officers: President, Edward Putnam; vice- president, Doris Brownlee; secretary, Martha Howe, and treasurer, Paul McGinnis, were really a hard working crew that year. Our junior year was happy and carefree, but we kept looking ahead to all the hard work coming up. After reaching our senior year, we realized that we are about ready to face life outside of school. We look with nostalgia on our past four years of education and wish we could relive them. Our Hermes shows some of the reasons we would like to turn the clock back. Besides the project of producing this Hermes the seniors put on the never to be forgotten senior ball. Our officers: President, Ruth Marshall; vice-president, Martha Howe; secretary, Nancylee Monroe, and treasurer, Nancy Whiting, were capable workers. We have seen boys and girls of our class take honors in sports, music, and scholarship. COMMITTEE OF TEN Left to right: Paul McGinnis. Maryanne Caputo. Dottie Herzog. Doris Brownlee. In our freshmen year we presented a Sadie Hawkins Dance at the Margaret M. Murphy School. Fun was had by all when the “Broom Dance” was introduced. Activities closed with the Freshmen Frolic, as we danced to the music of Chris De Cenza. Before we knew it, the time had arrived for us to return to school, but this year as gay young sophomores. Marie Michellucci became president; Gerald Stockman, vice-president; David LaPoint, secretary; and Anthony Piscitelli, treasurer. Mari- lyn Earl was Student Council Secretary. Judy Bronk and Ernest Hunsperger were crowned by our officers, Marie Michelucci and Gerald Stockman, as Mr. and Miss Holiday at the Soph. Hop. Ray Nelson provided the music, and the gym of the new school was decorated according to the theme of “Autumn Leaves.” Band, orchestra and choir kept many of our class busy. Our class also participated in Green- ies, Hi-Y, Student Council, football, basketball and baseball. We hated to see the year close but couldn’t wait to begin our year as jolly juniors. After two years of experience, we felt ready to start activi- ties for the coming year. Our officers and class- mates worked especially hard to make it a most successful year. The J.V. cheerleaders came out with bright new uniforms, cheering their best to bring our boys to victory. The new practice field was ready for use by many male juniors. Many members of our class had musical, scholastic, and athletic abilities. Enthusiasm and participation enabled us to put on what we think was the best prom Hudson Falls Central ever had. 43 SOPHOMORES Front row, left to right: P. Bailey, P. Blinn, S. Bray- man, G. Bell, R. The activities of our freshmen year were di- rected by President, Melanie Bromley; vice-presi- dent, Natalie LaPoint; secretary, Bob Carpen- ter; and treasurer. Bob Pratt. These officers led us in the work for our annual dance. The Kings- men provided romantic dance music for us dur- ing our Freshmen Frolic. Silvery Moon was the theme for our decorations. Later in the year came Moving Up Day when every freshmen sang loudly and clearly to the tune of “Round and Round”. Our song leader was Cathy Ninesling. The pea- green Freshmen came through their first year with flying colors. One of the main events of our sophomore year was the Soph Hop. The Stompers kept everyone dancing all evening with their variety of music. This dance was only one of our class’ many activities. Sophomore girls were active in Girls Hi-Y and on the cheerleaders squad, while the sophomores boys sparked the junior varsity basketball and football teams. Sophs also con- tributed a little culture to the school life by par- ticipating in band, orchestra, and choir. Our class is looking forward to the next two years in high school, and we hope that they will be as jam-packed with activity and achievement as the first two. 47 First row: B. Stevens, B. Shaw, S. CLASS OF '58 DANCES JUNIOR PROM After the long awaited moment, the crowning takes place. As the exciting night drew near and the clock struck nine, we could see the arrival of all the couples attending our junior prom. The bright red and yellow pagodas over the entrances blended in with the enchanting setting. The blue sky was adorned with vari-colored butterflies gracefully flying here and there. The fountain of rose colored water danced and sparked with the beams that shown upon it. Our garnished bridge, where many pictures were taken, spanned a little brook. Along the sides of the gym were the panels displaying scenic Japanese landscapes. The throne was placed between the panels and was trimmed with silver. Behind the throne was a mammoth white butterfly which sparkled with fairy dust. The striking decorations depicting the theme, “Younger Than Springtime”, were made under the capable direction of Doris Brownlee. The chaperones’ corner was effectively deco- rated as an oriental garden. We were delighted to have Mr. and Mrs. John Brownlee, Mr. and Mrs. George Finger, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Putnam, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Colpoys and our class advisors, Miss Helen Mayo, Mrs. Louise Chartier, Miss Mae Dolan and Mr. John Struth as our chaper- ones. The climax of the evening came with the coronation of Miss Nancylee Monroe as queen and William Finger, her escort, as king. Laura Marshall, last year’s queen, and George Bailey conducted the crowning ceremony attended by many parents and friends. The eight beautiful attendants wore gowns of various styles and shades. Marcia Bocchi wore a ballerina gown of lavender organdy with flowers attractively interwoven through it, Doris Brown- lee wore a floor length gown of white net with daisies scattered over it, Norma LaBarge wore a pink chiffon ballerina length gown. Dotty Her- zog wore a pink ballerina gown of pleated nylon organdy with a rose colored cummerbund, Martha Howe wore an exquisite brown laced ballerina gown made of net and with pink lace woven through it, Nancy Whiting wore an aqua net ballerina gown with a sparkling cummerbund, Pipitsa Vamvalis wore a pink chiffon ballerina length gown and Ruth Marshall wore a stunning, floor length gown of light blue organdy. Our queen, Nancylee Monroe, wore a red ballerina gown of net and velvet with a silver cummerbund at the waist and a crown of flowers on her head. The queen and all her attendants carried colonial bouquets. We danced to the dreamy music of Harry Vincent until the magic hour of one o’clock. Everyone had fancy blue and white dance pro- grams with silhouettes of a dancing couple grac- ing the cover to remember this memorable night. S3 Our king and queen are dancing on cloud nine. Bill is giving the crownbearers some help. Our queen has such a radiant smile for everyone. Our queen looks so pretty! We're so proud of Nance and Bill. Terry Monroe, queen's brother, and Gail Finger, king’s sister, are our cute crownhearers. 54 Miss Pipitsa Vamvalis and her escort, Robert O'Connell. Miss Norma LaBarge and her escort, Donald Place. Due to an abbreviated season, our football squad didn’t have much of a chance to show its real power in the Northern Conference. Under the direction of our fine coaches, Mr. Heidorf, Mr. Luciano, and Mr. Baker, our 1957 team showed very fine characteristics. If the flu hadn’t hit us, we would have had more chances to prove this. Of the four games played, we came out with a 1-2-1 record. Behind the power of several of last year’s gridders, combined with much new and enthusiastic stamina, the Hudson Falls Tigers displayed the kind of sports- manship that goes to make up a truly fine group of athletes. The most memorable game of our short season was the game with White- hall. Paul McGinnis was captain of the team at this game, as well as at all other games. A different co-captain was chosen to work with him at each game. Dick VanAernem, Jack Yattaw, Dick Tougas, and Dave Digamus held major roles along with Paul McGinnis in all games. Although we were not a championship team, we displayed features that distinguished us as athletes from Hudson Falls. We may not be remembered as the team that succeeded in over-powering more schools, but we will be remembered as one of the most sportsmanlike teams to ever graduate from our school. Dave Digamus easily out jumps them. Fort Edward looks worried. Dick Van Aernem jumps high for that ball. Gel right in there. Jack! Neat shot from Deudeye Daniels. Whitehall’s given up. The Hudson Falls Tigers opened their 1957-1958 season by winning the Thanksgiving Tournament. Dave Digamus was high-scorer in the 83-42 win over Salem, and along with Guy King led the scorers in the 57-36 win over Cornith. Our team won its third non-conference game with a 68-51 victory over Cambridge. Jack Yattaw was high scorer with 22 points. The Tigers lost their first conference game with South High by a score of 69-67. We gave them a good fight but not enough. Our next game was a victory over Warrensburg, 55-49. Brian Daniels was high scorer in both these games. In a series of conference games, our team defeated Fort Edward by a score of 84-55, and Whitehall by a score of 55-43. Guy King was high scorer in both of these games with 21 and 25 points respectively. Then we lost a very exciting game to St. Mary’s with a score of 60-59. Our team played a hard game, but luck wasn’t with them. Jack Yattaw was high scorer with 22 points. Warrensburg was beaten a second time by a score of 47-38. The last game we can review in this yearbook was a close game most of the way with our major challengers, the Glens Falls Indians. They pulled ahead in the last three minutes to win with a score of 52-41. Guy King and Dick VanAernem were high scorers with 12 points each. Brian’s picking up a jew tips. Last year, Hudson Falls’ track team was undefeated except for one minor upset by Granville. Some of our important meets were: the Class “B” sectionals at Johnstown, the Gloversville Invitationals, the Washington County Meet, and the Glens Falls Invitationals. Without the help of many participants from the class of ’58,it is certain that the team wouldn’t have been able to boast of such a good record. Those who helped the team to victory from our class were: Brian Daniels, Andy Collins, Jack Yattaw, Bill Wheeler, Ted Collins and Bob Clary. They excelled in the following fields respectively: broad jump, half-mile, broad jump, 100 yard dash, high jump, and pole vault. Another contributing factor to the team’s success was the fine coaching of Tony Luciano. 64 BASEBALL Front row. left to right: J. Volpe, A. Collins. D. Diga- mus. G. Ross. T. Collins. B. Daniels. D. Did the hunt work, Jack? Blanch Under the experienced direction of Coach Colpoys the 1958 baseball team showed well among the opposing competition. The few vacancies, left by gradu- ating seniors of last year’s class, were filled by experienced veterans from last year’s junior varsity baseball team. The ’58 team showed great promise. Its few problems were overcome by working with new prospects. Pre-season practice started sometime in late April. That time of year added to the keen interest shown by all the boys who were trying out for the team. After the boys were cut to the correct number, the team went through preliminary drills and inter-squad games for three or four weeks. At long last, the first game arrived. Excitement and anticipation covered the entire team as the starting lineup was announced by the coach. As the team went onto the field that day, and the following days of every other game for the remainder of the season, an immense interest was shown by the team members. The coach’s pep talks to the team included, “Fight! Fight! Try to win, but always be clean and fair.” 66 TRACK Front row, left to right: A. Collins, B. Carpenter. G. Linindoll, T. Collins. B.
