HUDSON FALLS CENTRAL SCHOOL HUDSON FALLS, NEW YORK VOLUME THIRTY-EIGHT MYERS CO rBock in the fall of '51, we be|jvi our high school careers- abounding in pleasures, work, anc iencLhips, Since then, we have engaged in many and varied activities ranging from the study of simple mathematics to the more complicated phases of the higher courses and from fund-raising projects to the much- awaited-for Senior outing, . Yes, our high school years were rich ones, and in thisyear- book we desire to make them memorable ones. From the pages of our scorebook record, we have taken the most eventful and cherished of our experiences to reveal to HERME Spreaders, WHAT'S THE SCORE FOR '54. • mF ''1- We sincerely hope that the reader receivesas much enjoy- ment from this book as we have gained in DresenlAtiaiUo him. Nellie Havens Editor-in-Chief HIE DEDICATE . . .our 1954 HERMES to Mr. Leonard Am low, who came to Hudson Fa I Is as a commerce teacher the same year that we entered high school here. We have known him as our teacher, our Sophomore Class advisor, and our HERMES business staff advisor as well asone of our good friends. Thanks to his unending work with the business staff, our yearbook was kept in excellent running order. This June, Mr. Amlaw is leaving our school system to teach in the Guilderland Cen- tral School. We shall miss having himin town with usand genuinely hope that this volume will help him to remember with pleasure his days here at Hudson Falls Central School. King, Superintendent of Schools; Bertram J. Dube, Clerk; L. Ray Lewis, President; Margaret M. Murphy, Vice- President. STANDING: J. Walter Juckett, Ezra R. Dickinson, Howard H. Griffin, John L. Vaughn, Sylvester C. Sullivan, William S. Henry. ABSENT FROM PICTURE: Robert J. Demp- sey. We honor Mr. L. Ray Lewis for his twenty-five years of continuous service on our Board of Education. Mr. Lewis was first appointed to fill a vacancy in 1929 and, later in the same year, was elected to the position. For fifteen years, he has very capably served as president of the Board. During the past twenty-five years, enrollment in our public schools has almost doubled. With the excellent cooperation of Mr. Lewis and Mr. King, the Board has formulated plans to meet the growing need for additional schools. ...CARRIED THE BALL... Our Superintendent Mr. DanaM. King came to Hud- son Falls in 1931 as Principal of our high school and in 1938 advanced to the position of Superintendent of Schools. During his administration in the Hudson Fa I Is Schools, the enrollment has grown from 990 to 1836. Since this greatly increased enrollment made the present buildings com- pletely inadequate, Mr. King and the Board of Education brought about the centralization of seventeen school districts and completed plans for ad- equate bui Idings. Mr. King, our superintendent, and his secretary, Mrs. Valley, look over the blueprint plan of the new school. Our Principal Two, four, six, eight, whom do we appreciate? Mr. Dearlove, our principal. He was a friend with whom we could talk over school problems at any time. He was never too busy to take a moment to get to the source of our problems and to lighten their seemingly insolvability with an un- derstanding word or suggestion. Now we realize how fortunate we were to have had Mr. Dearlove for our prin- cipal . MR. LEONARD AM LAW, B.S. Commerce HERMES Business Advisor MISS MILDRED H. BAKER, M. ED. Our students enter this little of- fice, often wearing bewildered expressions on their faces, but emerge with that smile of satis- faction and confidence revealed here on the faces of Pat and En- nio. Room 7, better known as the Guidance Office, has two ex- cellent counselors, who under- standing ly meet the problems of our boysand girls with most help- ful suggestions for their present and future welfare. Alice makesplans for her future. Mrs. Storey callsher attention to certain requirements needed for the college of her choice and helps Alice to plan her senior program accordingly. David is a step further than Alice. Having decided upon his future early in high school, he seeks help now from Mr. Labourr as he completes his application form. 12 ...EXPLomne our heritage... Six of our future citizens lis- ten attentively os Mr. Bogart describes the set-up of city government. In our American History Classes, we also learn- ed today what our forefathers did yesterday. Around and around the globe we go. Where to stop, Mrs. Norton knows. World History takes us all the way from Ancient Babylonia topresentday issues. 13 ...OUR LHU6UREE ROD ITS USES... The card catalogue is just one of the many sources of information that we find in our library. With Mrs. Bloomer's help, our library assignments be- came easier. Pleasure as well as work was ours as we perused the reading shelves. Miss Dolan, our English III teacher, aids a few of the fellows in finding information. It looks as if Bob and Don want to find the origin of a quo- tation. One project in English III is to study the uses of library reference books. Is that a banner headline, students? queries Mr. Gross. In English, in addition to studying newspapers and writing compositions, we stabbed Julius Caesar, beheaded Macbeth, and guillotined Sydney Carton. We learned that English class can be fun. ..fXPRfSSine OURSELVES CRERTIVELy... Miss Hogan can tell us that there's more to art than meets the eye. Our students learn to use the various mediums of art, such as water colors, colored pencils, poster paints, and colored chalk. They express themselves in landscape drawings, water scenes, still life sketches, flower arrangements, and even in self-portraits. “You must pretend to enter from this direction, advises Mrs. Roberts. In Drama Class, we learned the technique of the theater world . Mrs. Roberts al- so teaches radio, public speak- ing and sophomore English. 15 PROOF. ...fXPERIIDFOTKlG DUD flODIflO We draw circles, construct radii, solve for x and y , and find areas of different objects. Very often do the after school hours find us returning to Room 6 to get extra help from Mr. Howe, who teaches algebra, plane geometry, trigonometry, and solid geometry. Don't squint and you'll be able to see it better, admonished Mr. Reynolds in biology class. We dissected worms, frogs, and fish, studied anatomy and botany. Mr. Reynolds also teaches physics and general science. Here we see how to test a com- pound foraluminum. Ifitwerein color, we could see a pretty blue where there was once aluminum oxide. In chemistry, we learn the elements, their character- istics and reactions with each other. Mr. Labourr teaches two chemistry classes and is also our guidance teacher. 16 SMC STUDIED THE ROtMCE KUISUAGES... M-M-MI Buenos! are the re- marks our photographer hears when he catches Spanish Class tasting tortillas and guacamole prepared by Miss Mayo. Forus, Latin is not the dead language it is claimed to be. Miss Baker enlivens the language with flash cards, maps, prep- position games, and film strips. 17 S0(I1( CHOSf... OUR BAND: FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: M. L. Winslow, E. Vaughn, S. Werner, C. All our band instruments breezed along melodiously under Prof Ninesling's masterful wand. The fine performances of our band earned it state-wide recog- nition and high honors at competition. At our band concert, we brought to life the musical scores of se- lections such as Nordic Symphony, Egmont Over- ture, and Newsreel Suite. Our musical talent gained varied experiences in another department of music — orchestra. We scored at our performances with Jamaican Rhumba, Em- peror Waltz, and Bacchanal. We owe our accom- plishments to the efforts and fine leadership of Mr. Mora no. Our music department gained a new choir direc- tor-a man with a heart full of music - Mr. Robert Connor. His keen wit and amiable manner won the admiration of his students and audience alike. The Christmas Assembly with O Holy Night and our concert with Open Our Eves, My Lord, What a Morning, and Music nighlighted our singing year. OUR MAJORETTES: LEFT TO RIGHT: M. Yattaw, K. Huot, M. In Home Economics II, we become all round homemakers - and like it as the expressions on these girls' faces testify. Miss Jane Washburn teaches us to sew, helps us to plan and dec- orate our future homes, and makes us aware of the different periods of furniture. OTHfflS USED DMfSTIC UUfltl... Now, girls, you must be very careful of the baby's head when bathing him, instructs Mrs. Smith, our Home Economics teacher. In Home Economics III, we study child care and learn advanced sewing and cook- ing. 20 .10 IMMITMII HEALTH STHADAfiDS. Open wide, now, advises Miss Cox, our dental hygienist. We do, and, as a result, we return to class with bright and shining teeth. The above isanother of our student health measures. Because of the absence of a cadaver and the presence of anti-vivisection laws, we of Health Class dissect Mr. Not-AII-Here to better understand the human anatomy. Miss Prescott teaches us how sickness attacks the body and how we may immunize our systems against disease. We know physicals are here again when the girls squeal, I've grown another inch and gained five more pounds. Dr. Latimer and Miss Driscoll point out our physical weaknesses and suggest remedies. 21 UJHILf Business fifUIKED Business courses are not limited to girls only as the presence of Marvin in Bookkeeping II class indicates. With Mrs. Charter's help, we learn to balance ac- counts and become expert book- keepers . Everyone seems very engrossed in his tabula- tion - we 11, a I most everyone, except Monica. Mr. Am law is a very busy man. Along with typewriting, he teaches salesmanship and business management. Mr. Titi dictates a letter to his secretaries. These students receive special business training in the rapidly growing advanced secretarial class. This course includes shorthand, filing, advanced typewriting. Business English, the use of office machines, and the study of correct business procedure. 22 ■ I SfCRfTHRIfS ■ i ■ 23 Sarah Smith operates the electric calculator. Mr. Fontaine's boys establisha fine reputation in local industry. In carpentry class, we in- dulge in making articles for household use. With Mr. West's helpful sug- gestions, we became ex- pert craftsmen. Although our Green Wave grid had one of the fastest oackfieIds in the Northern Conference we wound up with a 4 and 3 record for the year. In our own Northern Conference, we won three games as against two defeats, placing third in tne league standings behind G lens rails and Fort Edward. All in all, it was a better than average year, for our Wave made a fine showing in all their games. Many say we lost to Glens Falls because of an early injury to our quarterback Joe Murphy. The highlight of our season was the complete defeat of our rival. Fort Edward, in a 19-0 victory. We placed five seniors on the All-Confer- ence team. These were: Dick LaFountain, Dick Belden, Dick Carota, Stan Singer, and 26 Bill Cronin. Careful, Bob, don't let the Whitehall posse surround youl What is this, basketball or soccer? There are good basketball seasons, and there are bad ones. This unfortunately was a poor one. Our one satisfaction was that we did not wind up at the bottom of the Northern Conference. We were spared that fate by Granville whom we luckily beat twice. We started the year poorly and were hampered by the loss of Joe Murphy due to illness. Our team played in spurts of good showings and poor showings, but the final crushing blow was the loss of Bill Cronin for the rest of the season because of an ankle injury. Our record for the year was six wins for twelve losses, but no matter how poor our record is we all echoed the same slogan, Wait 'til next year. H.F. BASKETBALL SCOREBOARD . . .OPPONENT. . . Under the guidance and direction of Coach Elmer Heidorf, our team was supplied with a good defensive infield, and although our hitting was not very strong, we won many of the games thanks to our excellent pitching staff. Most of the pitching honors went to Barry (Lefty) O'Donnell, when he pitched for five out of ten games. The other five were split between Earl Spellburg and Leon Dunn. Highest hitter for the year was Mike Simione. The year started out with a twogame winning streak, followed by one loss. We pretty much followed the same pattern the rest of the year, being defeated by Glens Falls and Fort Edward, in both games. We can safely say, that we had a fairly successful year. As far as track went, it was one of the most successful years we have had in a long time. We had the fastest relay team in the Section Two-Class B Finals held at Johnstown. This same 880-relay team set a new school re- cord for this event, placed second in the Schenectady invitation meet, and was rated fifth in the state at West Point. Five members of our track squad qualified for West Point. We won dual meets over Saratoga, Whitehall, and Granville, and lost only to Fort Edward. We placed sec- ond in the county meet and second in the sectionals, losing out to Glens Falls by only one point. Crowded in our tiny office but caught in a whirlpool of ideas, captions, and copy, we diligently and faithfully designed our book with the aid of Miss Dolan and Miss Prescott. Our business staff, under the supervision of Mr. Amlaw, solicited patrons and advertisements for our financial support.
