The Senior Class presents Septemler 3, 194 7 . 2). 'eat' We entered OUR GREEN YEARS as sophomores . . . .callow and timid, yet eager to try our fledgling wings ... We yearned to voice our small contributions in debate and on stage; we hoped to be accepted by clubs and chosen for teams; we looked forward breathlessly to the dances and the wonderful associations we would undoubtedly make; we dreamed of some day becoming exalted SENIORS. The next three years would be eventful ones . . . filled with happiness and learning .... our untried, youthful years ... the best years-of our lives . . . OUR GREEN YEARS. Mr. Bernard Labourr, ... tot his patience, sincerity, cheerful words, and warm, friendly smile..........our instructor and friend, Mr. J. Bernard Labourr. During OUR memorable GREEN YEARS, with skill and forbearance as an understanding teacher and guidance counselor, he directed us through the grow- ing period of our lives. WE are proud to dedicate OUR 1950 HERMES to the one who has done so much to make our high school years, successful and enjoyable. 5 Our Board of Education: Sitting, left to right: Sylvester C. Sullivan: Dana M. King, Superintendent of Schools; L. Ray Lewis, President; Ezra R. Dickinson, Vice-President; Bertram ]. Dube, Clerk; Robert ]. Dempsey. Standing: L. Berry Taylor, Carl R. Smith. J. Waller fuckett, Dr. Henry E. O'Neil, Raymond E. Heil. 4ppreciate Through OUR GREEN YEARS, we were privileged to enjoy the finest cultural and educational opportunities offered by any school. For the relentless effort of Super- intendent of Schools Dana M. King, his capable secretary, Mrs. Dorothy Valley, and an understanding and cooperative Board of Education in making our school one of the best in this section and our stay at Hudson Falls High both pleasant and beneficial, WE give our sincere thanks and appreciation. Ezra R. Dickinson, Vice-President of Board of Education. Dana M. King, Superintendent of Schools. L. Ray Lewis, President of Board of Education. 6 Four subjects minus nothing equals four subjects. There’s a moral to this that goes along these lines. Johnny Jones stormed into the Principal’s office and said,- I want to drop a subject. I can’t get my homework done, because- my classes are too close together.” Mr. Dearlove, an understanding man, stood and listened until Johnny cooled off. Then he rear- ranged Johnny’s unbalanced schedule, punctuated his classes with study halls, and dismissed him. Johnny then found that he could do the same amount of work much easier, through the effort of someone who cared. Just as Johnny was helped, so have we all been helped during OUR GREEN YEARS by our principal, Mr. Homer P. Dearlove. Above: Our Superintendent, Mr. Dana M. King, receives reports from bis efficient secretary, Mrs. Dorothy Valley. (Excellent dministratori . . . . Our guidance directors. Miss Helen Cashman and Mr. Bernard Labomr, review student records. OCTOBER 29, 1949—After a belated start, our Green Wave finally inaugurated its 1949 football season. The day was not a happy one for Hudson Falls rooters, however; for Granville trounced us, 27-7. Palmer scored our one touchdown on a 95 yard runback of an intercepted pass. NOVEMBER 5, 1949—Snow came today, but it was not joyfully accepted by the Greenies. Fort Edward topped us, 20-0. Once again, our indom- itable spirit was our best asset. NOVEMBER 12, 1949 — Our Heidorf-Luciano coached grid machine wound up the shortest foot- ball season in Hudson Falls history this afternoon. St. Mary’s won, but not until Palmer and Rock each scored a touchdown. The final score was was 20-13. P. S. During our joyous sojourn at Hudson Falls High, we prepared for future citizenship through participation in Student Council . . . Here, we learned the functions of government under the firm guidance of our council advisers, Miss Cash- man and Mr. Labourr. We discussed school problems and student complaints under the lead- ership of our progressive president, Don Wilson. Student basketball tickets, wonderful assembly pro- grams, dancing to dreamy music of popular dance band recordings — all achievements of Student Council, we remember. Secretarial dc oar6e OCTOBER 10, 1950 . . . Today we visited the advanced commercial classes. A first glance at the secretarial scholars, working diligently and perseveringly, convinced us of the skill needed to master Advanced Type- writing, shorthand. Business Law, bookkeeping, and complicated office machines. Mr. Teti pictured for us the future possibilities of this training. Upon completion of this fifth year course, the students are well-prepared to fill the need for specialized business workers in the growing business field of today. We made many plans to create, maintain, and extend Christian standards of living throughout our fine school. Working together at football games, collecting money for the March of Dimes, setting up bleach- ers, and publishing basketball programs showed our spirit of cooperation. This prosperous year concluded with a most enjoyable banquet after a very entertaining Memorial Day dance in the high school gymnasium. After an evening of fun and frolic with our inductees, we initiated the year's activities under the leadership of Hi-Y president, Wilda Bovee. With the assistance of our adviser. Miss Lucy Dwyer, we worked together on such affairs as the Christmas Ball, food sales, and tea dances after the football games. The money obtained from these functions was wisely put to use as scholarship awards for two promising graduates. A year of good will and well-being was experi- enced by all of us, as we came to the close of OUR GREEN YEARS. If I'd known you were coming I’d have baked a cake ... Below, left: Hogan eyes the ball with anticipation. Below: Cliff and Elwyn Newell in the difficult high muscle stand. High with hope!!! On Out' dOashetlall! Oourt. December 20, 1949—Jubilation reigned in Hudson Falls tonight after the Greenies' stirring 35-31 victory over St. Mary's. The triumph was the fourth in as many starts for the Green Wave basketeers. January 6, 950—A big Glens Falls team was given more of a fight than it anticipated tonight, but the Greenies could not muster enough strength to trip the Red and Black. The final score was 57-45. January 27, 1950—Coach Tony Luciano's hopes for a Hudson Falls Northern Conference championship were blackened to- night as Fort Edward tripped the Greenies in a thriller 49-47. The Green Wave led right up to the wire, but the Forts sal- vaged the game in the waning seconds of play. February 10, 1950—A glorious 42-41 victory over Glens Falls raised the Green and White’s record to nine wins and three losses. Revenge was sweet as the Hudson Falls cagers knocked the Indians out of the loop lead. February 24, 1950—Once more the Greenies avenged an earlier defeat .... this time the losers were from Whitehall. The railroaders were outscored 58-51 by the Lucianomen. The win was the sixth in a row for the Green Wave. March 3, 1950 . . . Fort Edward won the Conference tonight by defeating Hudson Falls, 42-41. It was the second time of the campaign that the Blue and White pulled the game out of the fire in the final seconds. The loss was the fourth for the Greenies as against twelve wins. Walt Green paced the team for the season with 221 points, placed third in the Northern Confer- ence scorers and was elected to the mythical All-Conference basketball team. Joe Casey and Ray Evans also placed in the first ten conference scorers. Lee Potvin led the Junior Varsity to a nine and seven record. Our Varsity and Jayvee’s: front row, left to right: R. Evans, f. Today we chose to follow the student leadership of Carol Chappelle during our third and final year of Dramatics under the guidance of Mrs. Muriel Rosebrook Stark. Activity started at the beginning of ninth period with election of offi- cers. As Carol’s sub-ordinates, we elected Beverly Oddy, Mary Casey, and Joyce Blinn. Thursday: December 22, 1949 ■ . ■ ’’AT THE FOOT OF THE MANGER” starring Janice Henderson, Mary Lou Chapuis, John Place, Donald Wilson, and Carol Chappelle.........This is the story we presented today for our annual Christmas Play. Mrs. Stark directed an all star cast, featuring fifty angels and nine important speak- ing roles. On Ole Friday: March 31, 1950 . . . Tonight we presented STUDENT DRAMA NIGHT, our crowning glory of this year. A howling approval greeted our one-act play as we por- trayed a comedy entitled A night In The Country.” Charles Woodcll drew laugh after laugh, as the boisterous INTRUDER. Jim Britt held them in stitches with his take-off of Al, a character from the Bronx. Perchance to Dream” and How To Propose” were presented by the juniors and the sophomores; Purple at the Window and Orange at the Window,” by the freshmen. Papa sets a fine example at the table as the Seniors portray A Night in the Country.” The chase is on as the Sophomores portray A Proposal of Marriage. APRIL 29, 1950 — With exactly a week to competition in Hudson, our A Capella choir needs only to maintain the excellent level of training they displayed in their concert last evening. JUNE 26, 1950 — Some of us played in the orchestra for the last time tonight, when Mr. Chattier led the group in one of the best recitals heard during OUR GREEN YEARS. BASEBALL . . . Woodell was the surprise of the team last year — he pitched 4-hit ball for fourteen innings for the Junior Varsity . . . Mahan played second base and Taylor caught . . . Walt Green's consecutive hits came within one of tying the record set by Muff Nassivera. TRACK .... We beat Schuylerville in a duel meet . . . and placed in several others . . . Aubrey. )9 Under Vk. oon, Today, for the second time this year, we unpacked our formals in preparation for the annual Junior Prom. The Prom was, without a doubt, the most outstanding social event of our eleventh year; for, at this time, we chose the King and Queen to reign over their subjects. The high-light of the evening, the grand march — to the tune of Blue Moon with Ray Nelson and his orchestra — was led by Queen Jean Norton and King Joe Cormie, accompanied by the Queen’s attendants, Wilda Bovee, Carolyn Inglee, Beverly Oddy, Margaret Reed, Fay Stewart, and Marilyn Stone. The rest of us followed in procession with proud and cheerful hearts. Our junior Prom queen, jean Norton.
