HUDSON'S BAY HIGH SCHOOL • 120 6 HAST RESERVE STREET, 'ifi KZ wMl ■Joe CdCfTL FOREWORD Two years ago if was just a dream, but in February of this year it became a reality. The construction of Hudson's Bay High School was complete enough for us to move in. We did so with hopeful thoughts for the future and happy memories of the past. In the same manner the school was constructed, so is this book put together, to hold our memories of friends we made, dreams we dreamed, and the things we learned. This first edition of AQUILA is erected to endear in our thoughts Hudson's Bay High School . . . where the whole person is developed. 1 'i MU1 , . J I Iff' Ii ‘ i ’ ’ ' I fi ft 1ft A fc l 'l ' DEDICATION These first graduates of Hudson's Bay High School have many pleasant recollections tucked away in their Book of Memories. Upon leaving high school these seniors will devote all of their energies to the fulfillment of the hopes and dreams filling the pages of that book. The new life built from these dreams with hard work and simple faith will be one filled with happiness, joy and with a limitless future shining brightly before them. To this graduating class the Aquila Staff extends its sincere wishes for good luck and a life of abun- dant good fortune. To these, the 1956 graduates, this Aquila is dedicated. sCLCAMtreA jtAeS pSlasriA -fax, s tcn A. DALE WHITENACK, who serves as Superintendent of Schools . . . We had the unique experience of dividing our big class into two groups, of being transported to classes all over town for the first semester, of moving into our new quarters even though they were not ready, of sitting in classrooms that were so arranged that we could learn much more than just what our teachers were telling us because we could also hear the teachers on each side of us, of having lockers that were nice but open to the public, of having a campus without grass, planning our own sidewalks, of having a building that will be the envy of many school districts, and of still being able to get our lessons, our credits, and graduating in a normal way. I wish to congratulate you for taking all these problems in stride, for developing a school spirit for the basketball season that was second to none in the league, and for organizing your student government to fit the needs of this school without copying others. I want to remind you that although we have had some problems, this year also has given you special opportunities. You will always be able to come back to Hudson’s Bay Homecoming as the “Number One graduating class. You will have the opportunity in future years of boasting that you were an EAGLE, because this is going to be a great high school. You will have an opportunity of looking at a school twenty years from now that was so designed that it will be as modern then as it was the day you moved in. Good luck, EAGLES. Spread your wings. See the world. There is no height to which you can’t fly if you try. ELDON BOYD Principal 'Z tcC CU. S. This first yearbook for the new Hudson’s Bay High School will in years to come provide you with many memories of your first year as a student body. No doubt, the high-light of your school experience was the opportunity to observe the opening day’s ceremonies February 3, of this year. I shall never forget it. When your Student Body President cut the ribbon and called your attention to the significance of the event, she launched into existence what is certain to become one of this state’s outstanding high schools. Your student leaders can look back with a sense of real accomplishment. Think of the many things they did — selected your school colors, decided upon a mascot, chose names for your paper, and this yearbook, formulated a student body constitution, set up a Safety Commission, which received the commendation of community leaders. These are a few of the many achievements! We are well on our way. With your continued support HBHS will have a long and proud history. Donald E. Fowler CONSTRUCTION! The process of building, shaping, form- ing. We of Hudson’s Bay are deeply involved in that process. Each day about the building we notice skilled workmen en- gaged in building, shaping, forming. We have watched the men lay the floor in the gymnasium, and we have seen the sidewalks go in. Each week marks the completion of one project and the beginning of another. There is another phase of CONSTRUCTION in which you of HBHS are active participants. You are building in a spiritual sense. You are establishing traditions and ideals. The results of your efforts will be manifested in your concern for your school and its good name, in the care you take of your build- ing, in your attitudes towards your homes and your community. As you assume your responsibility in this phase of the CON- STRUCTION, be determined in your goals, and true to your ideals. Let this motto be your guide: Esse quam videri. To be rather than to seem. Catherine Harty Our new high school is a beautiful group of structures. The site is a historical one that should be the envy of other schools. The job ahead is to build the educational advances to match both site and buildings. This will fake work, time and patience. Along with educational advances goes the making of tra- ditions. In our attempt to mold students into useful citizens and give our future leaders the necessary tools to work with, we shall need the co-operation of all. If is hoped that everyone will contribute his share in this plan. Many new phases of teaching are in evidence that eventu- ally will replace present methods. Changes and progress are slow to establish themselves in education. However, with the advent of new techniques, it seems as though modern inven- tion will dictate new methods that we shall soon experience in our new school. This is just one evidence that our progress is going to go on and on. To begin with, they sponsored the annual Homecoming Pep Rally on October 7, in which the students of both schools paraded through the streets of downtown Vancouver as one whole student body. Then followed their successful party, held January 12, and later their assembly on May 11. Sophomore Eagles, along with those from the Fort, made the school proud by keeping the grounds clean. K. C vrripd yOro '£5 CHUCK FURNO Heod Cooch, Fort Voncouvtr After slipping by Olympia 13-12, dumping Seattle Prep 1 4-6, smash- ing Longview 27-20, and pushing Aberdeen out of the way with a 33-14 score the Vancouver Trappers, a team made up of two high schools lost a well played game to the strong Hoquiam Grizzlies by a 6-13 margin. After this setback, the very talented ironmen from Vancouver reared into action again for the remainder of the season. Walking over the Centralia eleven 61-0, whacking Central Catholic 33-27, shading Kelso by the slim score of 14-13, and topping the season off by rapping Camas 20-0. This year's Trapper team was a very new and unexperienced, but fast improving team. With one of the fastest backfields ever to come out of Vancouver high schools a championship team was expected. Title hopes were broken when the powerful Hoquiam Grizzlies handed the Trappers their first and only loss of the season. Winning all the rest of their games, a second place league standing was a sure thing for the hopeful Trappers. In one of the last games of the season, the Aberdeen Bobcats gave the Grizzlies a bad time and the Hoquiam team went down in defeat. This put the Trappers in a tie for the championship with Hoquiam. Another honor that the Trappers received was a fourth place rating in the State Poll. TOM POE Assist. Cooch. Hudson's Boy J. V.
