My position and the position of the fac- ulty in these opening pages is symbolic of the position we have filled with you during the past few yearsg a position indicative of leadership, of guidance, of developing within you a sense of direction. Your position as students in the following pages of the annua.1 is one of1fO110WiI1g this leader- ship, this guidance, and developing this sense of direction. This is the final annual for the class of 1961. As you pass from these pages and out into your adult life, you will be the leader and guide. You will follow the sense of direction which we have helped you develop. As you consider the finality of this statement it is my desire that you will realize why we as leaders have attempted to demand the highest degree of achievement from each of you that your apparent ability will permit. We cannot take our position lightly. Your future depends on the degree of success or failure we have realized. We hope we have helped you develop initiative, personal integrity, esthetic appreciation, a respect for the dignity of work and the rights of others, and attitudes and ideals which are com- mendable in our society. These attributes should insure for you a respected positionin your community. I speak now for the faculty and myself in saying that it has been a pleasure and privilege to have worked with you. We wish for each of you a happy and successful future. 3 IIHIIIIMIII We, the Senior Class of 1961, proudly dedicate this edition of THE MIRROR to our sponsor, Mr. Woodford. A W5 iv MASS HISHIRY In September of 19 57, we, as a body of forty-two Freshmen, began our search for our Stairway to the Future . To direct us on the first phase of our journey we had Mr. Herman Garbee as Chief Guide. To assist him we elected as President-Mary Laughon, Vice President-Warren Brown, Secretary-Sue Tuck, Treasurer-Fleeta Preston, and SCA Representative- J eanettie Newman. Our reporter, Shelby Goad, kept the wor ld posted on our progress. We lost four members, Willie Ferguson, Larry Karnes, Janice Carter, and Kathryn Crouch, who decided to look for stairways of their own. At the end of nine monthsof steady travel, we stopped for a three month vacation. After resting thoroughly, we again resumed our search for our stairway. Our Chief Guide this year was Mrs. Catherine Ginn.As her as- sistants we selected President-Carolyn Meador, Vice President-Richard Franklin, Secretary-Joyce Ayers, Treasurer-Douglas Howell, and SCA Representative-Mary Laughon. Bettie Austin was elected to relay our activities to the outer world. We lost three members of our party. Sue Tuck found her Stairway to the Future in marriage. Douglas Witt and Mary Brown joined another searching party. We gained a new member that year. Richard Franklin decided to continue his search with us. J eanettie Newman decided to leave our company permanently. In September of 19 59 we started out again. Our guide was Mr. Winston Woodford. We selected as his assistants President-Fleeta Preston, Vice President-Richard Franklin, Secretary-Shelby Goad, Treasurer-Douglas Howell, and SCA Representative-Mary Laughon. Bettie Austin was again selected as our reporter. The strain proved too great for some, so Seymour Crouch, Ogburn Howard, Rachel King, Ronnie Mitchell, and Russell Plymale quit. Lera Lee Howell preferred married life to searching for stairways. This wasabig year for us. We gave our Junior Play, Finders Creep- ers to help sponsor the J unior-Senior Banquet. The theme for this banquet was Stairwayto the StarsF', and was given in honor of those who had end- ed their search. Warren Brown, Richard Franklin, Larry Howell, and Sherman Krantz chose to wait for another searching party. One member of our group, Janet Nuckolds, grew tired of her last name and decided to change it to---Ferguson, but we still have her in our com pany. Carolyn Meador decided she had searched long enough and left.us in favor of married life. September of 19 60 saw sixteen tired but hopeful Seniors begin the last leg of the search. Mr. Winston Woodford was with us again as our Chief Guide. To assist him We chose the following, President-Fleeta Preston, Vice President-BobbyJohnson, Secretary-Shelby Goad, Treasurer-Mary Laughon, and SCA Representative Jeannette Overstreet. Nolan Crowder was selected as our new reporter. The first big event of the year was the very successful Senior Play, entitled, Who Killed Aunt Caroline '? . The Junior-Senior Banquet, given bythe jmiiors in our honor, was one of the special highlights of the year. The Senior Trip was very exciting and educational for all who went. Having reached the Stairway to the Future , with wonder-ful me- mories of our searchand high hopes for the future, we see tEt it extends far into the horizon and we realize that our search has only begun. We know that step by step we will advance to meet the challenge of the unknown. MASS PIHIPHHIY As we approach the first landing of this long flight of stairs we see the seniors of 1961 on various steps. First, we see Tommy Wilson an engineer for United Steel Company, has just returned from England. Engineers must be making good money these days. He built the first bridge across the Atlantic Ocean. Fleeta Preston, has financial troubles. As owner of the Preston Printing Co. , she has lost millions with the destruct- ion of school books. Billy White, a well-knovsm apple packer is appearing on a new T. V. series, Keep Packing. While watching a new T .V. program, Famous Quotations, whom should I see but Jeannette Overstreet as hostess. Linda Newman has just recently purchased a yacht. She plans to spend several months abroad to search for her one and only. Alice Mayhew has just returned from Michigan where she attended an Alder Sewing Machine Convention with her hus- band. Mary Laughon, a professor at Madison College, has just recently been appointed head of the Bookkeeping Department. Jean Krantz is now operating model agencies all over America. She is doing well with figures, I hear. She is still looking for her one and only. Bobby Johnson is the. Republican representative from Alaska. He is a happily married man and seems to enjoy the cool indifference of the Democrats. Douglas Howell has won the American Farmer Award for being outstanding farmer, citizen, and father. Shelby Goadis doing fine with her acting, she will appear on Broadway next week in the famed, A Midsummer Nights Dream by William Shakespeare. Janet Ferguson has just returned froma tour of the world. She owns jelly factories in all parts of the U.S. as well as abroad. Nolan Crowder has just returned from a tour of the U.S. His hobby is playing baseball for the Hawaii Surfboarder's team. Emily Crouch is doing fine as the private secretary for the Arnold Used Car Lot. She and her husband travel everywhere together and buy used cars. Joyce Ayers is happily married and is going to tour the U. S. with her husband to survey new highway locations. Betty Austin, a professor at Lynchburg College, has re- ceived the most outstanding award for her tireless efforts to Lmnerve the students. Our first landing has come to an end, and our steps are getting higher. So, we must start planning for the future and hope that we will do the best thing. We know he will be happy now. I, Bobby Johnson, do will bus no. 20 to anyone crazy enough to put up with the mental cases who ride it. I, Linda Newman, do will my ability to grow tall to Shelby Perdue. I, Bettie Austin, will my safe driving habits to Linda Preston in hopes that she will put them to good use.
