Can you remember your first impression? I t was probably one of excitement, awe, anticipation and fascination. We became acquainted with many of the faculty members through our continuous queries pertaining to the directions of our next class. However, soon we became familiar with our new school and settled down to work. Our first project was to sell candy (with almonds of course) and boy, did we sell! It was a huge success with room 230 leading the seventh grade. i With the help of Mr. Brown and Mr. Bihler, the entire school surprised Mr. Wieder with a new Alma Mater composed by Mr. Passarella. We will never forget those rousing Rah, Rah, Rah's! Hubbard caught on with the Christmas spirit by giving a combination band, orchestral and choral program. It was a tremendous success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. zi In an effort to further the culture inour hallowed halls, the students of Hubbard were given the opportunity to see Guiseppe Verdi's, ll Trovatore,'’ at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. It was a never-to-be-forgotten experience. Our Drama club was well represented by platform reading and Greek Chorus which was given to the student body. It also appeared at night for our parents. On the athletic field, Hubbard showed much ability and sportsmanship. Our basketball team played beyond expectations in a thrilling and winning season. Within the school we also had active participation in our intramural basketball program. Home- room 106 came out on top for the seventh grade. The track tear was as good as it was fast and we won the Rotary Track Meet hands down. On the baseball diamond the seventh grade was well represented by Ormand Davis, Ted Farber, Pete Dreier and Jeff Gingold. So ended our first year at Hubbard. We looked forward to returning the following September! “Mr. IneBetween”’ Gee whiz, the school's smaller! No, it really wasn't but we have come back a year older and a year wiser. Of course, there were more teachers and therefore, to our great dismay, more homework! Dentists beware! Hubbard is at it again. This year's candy sale was even a bigger success than last year's and Homeroom 230 won the honors as candy champions. We would like to extend our thanks to the many people who worked with us on the ''Steppingstone,'’ without them it would have been impossible to complete this book. We would like to give our special thanks to Mr. Gwasdacus, our advisor, who spent many long hours plan- ning and constructing this annual. Many people do not realize the time and effort he has spent in helping us, had it not been for him the ''Steppingstone'' would not have gotten off the ground. Our special thanks also go to Mr. Stave for his valuable as- sistance in preparing our pictures for publication. The Editors Mr. Brown and Mr. Bihler outdid themselves intheir presentation of a Christmas and Spring concert. There were various ensembles and soloists. It was a program thoroughly enjoyed by all who heard it, and especially by those of us who participated tare Hubbard's chorus went to Jersey City during the year and participated in the All State Chorus Festival. Also, they enter- tained the Old Guard at the Y.M.C.A....Have Chorus--Did Travel. Another year--another opera. This year it was Verdi's ''La Traviata. It was, as usual, a delightful experience. We never realized what future stars we had amongst us until the Talent Show was presented. A variety of talent was co- ordinated by Mr. Raymond who deserves all the credit we can give him. Congratulations to all! Some members of the show played before a group for the Handicapped. Remember the day Mr. Jack Banning came to us with his program on sound? We can still ''see'' the helicopter flying around the auditorium. We must not forget the sports scene at Hubbard. Our able-bodied basketball team showed great spirit even though our games were not all won. For the second time in two years, Homeroom 106 won the eighth grade basketball intramurals. The track team, under the able supervision of Mr. Colangelo, proved that they were hard to beat. Our relay team set a new record and we won the Rotary Meet again. John Connors was an excellent representative for the eighth grade. Mr. Black and Mr. Hirsch led the baseball team to an exciting, but losing season. We vowed to do better the next year. In an exciting election, three of our classmates obtained offices on our student council. They were: Jeff Gingold, Presi- dent; Charles Balcius, Treasurer; and Linda Heyman, Parliamentarian. We wished that we could remain in the eighth grade but You Can't Take it With You.'' By the way, that was the name of our school play with eighth graders, Kees Langeveld and Jack Foley in supporting roles. Congratulations to all. It was terrific! “Tt Was Great While It Lasted’’ We returned for our last year at Hubbard and pr oceeded to make this the best! Homeroom 230 was defeated this year in a successful candy sale by Homeroom 106. A total of 4400 bars were sold, making it the greatest candy sale ever. We wish to express our most heartfelt thanks to Mr. Gwasdacus for devoting his time and energy to this project. Once again we were entertained by a fabulous Christmas concert. Congratulations to all who participated in it. We didn't think Shakespeare could be so funny until we saw ''A Comedy of Errors'' at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton. It was a thousand laughs and a wonderful time. Mr. Jack Banning returned again for two assemblies on space and photography. His sense of humor and knowledge of his subjects made them interesting experiences. The opera came to Hubbard with the coming of Robert Simpson, Bass Soloist, appearing in an assembly program. Roll the presses! Sheila Levine with the Etkin twins sharing editorial duties made this year's ''Red and White the best ever. Remember those driving tackles by Bill Webb or Steven Stepney's off tackle runs? They were part of this year's Maxson-Hubbard football team. By winning five of their fourteen games, the basket- ball team set some new Hubbard records. Eddie Hatchett's thirty-eight points against Edison set a new school record. In that same game the team scored seventy-five points, a school high. Well done, Hubbard Hawks. Many thanks are due to those girls who dida great job cheering and keeping up school spirits. A new addition to the intramural program was the girls basketball teams which was won by Homeroom 223. The boys intramural program was captured by Room 239, thus ending Room 106's two year supremacy. We are hoping for a terrific baseball season with such diamond dazzlers as ''Fuzzy'' Allen, Bruce Abeles, Alan Katz and Roger Cox. As we go into printing, the track team has just as- sembled, and we are looking forward to a great season. Who will ever forget Alan Katz inhis wonderful por- trayal of Elwood P. Dowd and Anne Arnold as his sister, Veta Louise Simmons? The ghost of Harvey is still with us. You'd better watch where you sit! As we recallour three wonderful years at Hubbard we can feel a deep satisfaction in that we have accomplished much and helped further the name of Hubbard Junior High School. We will always remember our great days here and look forward to the three wonderful years ahead at Plainfield High School.
