Hubbard High had a splendid display of all five of these qualities this year. The girls with the much appreciated help of their advisor practiced hard, starting in the last part of August and continued prac ticing throughout the year, preparing for both football and basketball seasons. Mrs. Theisen and her girls deserve the highest praise tor their achievements during the 1957-1958 season. They never quit fighting and their spirit and good sportsmanship was always of the highest caliber. Their will to win and fighting spirit can be seen in the fact that after a slow start with 1 tie and 2 losses they came back to down a strong Hickory 42-20. FO a I I Midway in the season the ilu epidemic played havoc with the team as they were forced to play the Boardman game with most of the regular squad out of action with the virus. The epidemic also forced the postponement and rescheduling of the Sharpsville and Struthers games which were finally made up late in the season. To Coach Modak and all the boys we owe a debt of gratitude for their long hours of hard work and their persistance in carrying on in the fine Hubbard tradition against many obstacles to complete the season with spirit high. . g x .V-ws. Bullen Each year at the close of the first semester the faculty of Hubbard High School must choose the students whom they believe are the most de- serving for membership to the N.H.S. This decision must be based on not only the student's scholarship, but also his service, dependability, character, and leadership. Any student who is a junior or senior with a B or better average is eligible . This organization is purely honorary and has only one activitiy, the formal induction service held shortly after the new members have been announced. The only meeting held is for the purpose of electing officers. Mr. Schmidt and Mrs. Englehart are the advisors. The purpose of N.H.S. is to encourage students to strive for better grades, higher standards, and to develop a we ll -rounded personality. With these aims and strict requirements for membership in N.H.S., it is a hard-earned reward, also a great honor. Senior Members left to right R. Bartone 'K B. Black if M. Fellows PF R. Many hours of hard work went into developing the effective ness of the enchanting theme, Garden of Memories. Especially will this event be remembered by Jim Barita and Judy Ross, king and queen, chosen by the Junior class. Our class president, John Handzush and Betty Lou Black crowned the becoming couple. A delicious buffet-style luncheon with soft candlelight was enjoyed by all in the cafeteria, while the music of Charlie James floating in from the gym formed a delightful mood background. The Girl Leaders is an organization for sophomore, junior, and senior girls. The selec- tion of members is based on leadership, ability to get along with other students, dependability, and good sportsmanship. Members are selected by previous members of the organization and their physical education teacher. A girl must have at least a C average to become and remain a member. They hold regular meetings and have elected officers. The duties of the girls are assisting their instnictor, Mrs. Theisen, in regular gym classes, helping to promote an interest in girls' sports, and acting as officials in the girls' intramural program. One of the main activities in which they take part is play day. It is a day in May when various activities are participated in by differ- ent schools for the whole day. Refreshments are served and awards are given to the schools winning the contests. E Q X BOYS sw AEg i1S ! R 1 is ,I yew nf I' Ek 1911 V 5 rfifqii E Vv. V A, we. Early in 1957 Mr. Herrmann started laying plans for our Bard. After some discussing, American Yearbook was decided to be our publisher. These people proved to be very kind and willing to help us with our problems. Pictures on these pages are the staff which spent many hours cropping pictures, drawing layouts, writing copy, taking subscriptions and selling advertisement. We've done our best for HHS and the class of 58 and hope you enjoy this book as much as we enjoyed putting it out. Although at first it was terribly hard to sit still all day when we were accustomed to running aboutg our kind teachers helped us. Who can forget the mice, Marilalee, Madalee, and Susalee, in Mrs. Burnet's room! Or the time at St. Pat's when Dan Madeline got his hands smacked with the ruler? What terrible thing did you do, Dan? In Mrs. Painter's room Juanita Thompson did not feel like sit- ting at her desk one day, but if we remember correctly she changed her mind due to the persuasive manner of Mrs. Painter. 93 One day in Miss Neptune's room another stubborn little girl named Carol Krause would not stop bothering Bob Hinerman, so she was asked to stand in the hall. This scene was familiar to many of the children in the following days and none of us, we are sure, will forget the embarrassment we suffered when a visitor would enter the school and find us being punished in this manner. But we soon settled down and began our studies. Who can ever forget the day we came home and read to our mother-- Look, Jane, look. Run, Spot, run. Jane, look and run with Spot. How proud we were! Christmas time soon rolled around and we had a visitor at Roosevelt School--Santa Clause!! Gee, the popcorn balls and candy he gave us tasted good, didn't they? It surely was hard to set our toys down and study! The next big event that came up was Valentine's Day. Following that were Washiugton's and Lin- coln's birthdays. Remember the big valentines and log cabins we colored and the songs we sang-- Said Washington to Betsy Ross a Flag Our Nation Needs. We might not have been singing the right notes but no one can complain we weren't singing loud enough. The years passed swiftly and our studies progressed rapidly. Although everyone of us would rather have died than to admit it, WE LOVED SCHOOL! ! 97 Ma rg aret Dobson During these years we had many activities to help to pass the time away. Who remembers the ant villages in Mrs. Jenkins' and Miss Hamill's room or the popcorn parties in the fifth and sixth grade? One of the most memorable of these activities was the annual music festival. When the teachers were preparing for this we soon learned to be good and stay out of their way. Remember the year all the little girls were flowers and the chorus sang April Showers. Then in our last music festival we performed a little Irish dance. The teachers had quite a time that year be- cause there was an epidemic of measles. Our elementary years having been completed, we passed the first milestone of our school life, the changing of classes in our seventh year. JoAnne DeVeto Ronald DeV0r Kathleen Dickey Paul Dominic Frank Dripps 151 William Dunmire Robert Edwards Charlotte Fedorchak Marianne Fellows Peter Ferrett Michael Fitzsimons This event was happily anticipated but we soon discovered it was not as easy as had been expected. Teachers soon grew weary of finding a student at the wrong time in the wrong place on the wrong day. How we loved it though, being able to participate in the excitement and activities of the high school upperclassmen. Many of us remember Mr. Cunningham's geography class and the songs he used to play on his ukulele and the rush to the library for reports when your grade was slipping. At lunch time there were such things as continued movies at 2gt a day. Did any of us ever see the whole movie? There was also dancing in the gym and a gum chewing contest. 99 No one can imagine our great disappointment when we entered the 8th grade and found that once again we were confined to one room. But it didn't turn out to be so terrible. We were now considered seniors of the Junior High. Some of us were responsible for handing out milk and cleaning the tables in the cafeteria which had just been started. We enjoyed doing this especially since we got out of class. Time waits for no one and we soon found ourselves in our freshman year in the new high school. Again we were changing classes and this we had to grow accustomed to all over again. It really wasn't so bad being the babies of the high school. Pleasant acquaintances that we had always known were replaced by new and different per- sonalities. In those first few weeks the upperclassmen could always spot a freshman by the bundle of books under his arm and the little blue book that he carried open to the map of the school. Although the upperclassmen were very nice about giving directions, we would always be more confused when they finished. The teachers were very patient with us in the first few weeksg if you came in fifteen or twenty minutes late, nothing was said. Shirley Hetrick Robert Hinerman Jolm Hoffman Robert Horvath Barbara Huff Ronald Hulton Larry Jamieson Roy Jarvis Janyce Johnson William Joshua Victor Katilus Richard Kay It soon was time tor the election of class officers and the responsi- bility of choosing capable ones was our first task as a class. After much consideration, we elected Bob Hinerman - President, Lynda Ingram - Vice President, Betty Lou Black - Secretary, and Delores Tuchek - Treasurer. The freshman football team elected Juanita Thompson as our candidate for Halloween Queen. We selected as our class colors red and white and the red carnation as our class flower. In the weeks to come we proved ourselves to be an industrious and hard working class by selling pencils. The upperclassmen bought pencils and more pencils-thanks to our perseverances. Boy, were they glad when we had finally sold all we had ordered. 103 '-. It was because of their efforts that we had class parties which were a huge success. At the one on Va1entine's Day, do any of you remember Mr. Smelko doing the Hutchie Kutchie? This was a far cry from his businesslike manner in science class. Our freshman subjects were very difficult for most of us. We were unaccustomed to working for X the un- known or learning a language other than English. Gee, we had enough trouble with English, but golly Latin and Spanish were impossible! But most of us survived our first year successfully and we found our- selves one of the upperclassmen, We surely felt important and made it a point in the first few weeks of school to address a freshman as an underclassman. 105 As our money making projects we had the concession stands at the football and basketball games and a Mile of Pennies, which was trying to get a mile of pennies when they were laid side by side. This proved to be successful and we soon grew tired of counting those dirty old pennies. For our class officers we choose Tony Rosile as President, Donna Wood as Vice-president, Betty Lou Black as Secretary, and Pat Kopp as Treasurer. Our Homecoming attendant was Delores Tuchek and our candidate for Holloween Queen was Pat Kopp. In the spring as was the tradition we gave the Seniors their farewell dance. This affair turned out to be a huge success, but the part that we enjoyed most was the decorating. This was our first experience with decorating for a dance. Daniel Madeline Saundra Maliner Helen Maritch Hugh McBride Richard Mclntee Cillhefillc McKee Robert McKnight Marjorie McMil1en Oliver McPeters Roberta Michael Madelon Mitchell Rosemary Modarelli Almost before we knew it, our sophomore year was over, and we were juniors. We were now considered young adults. Our boys were at last on first string and helped to make for Hubbard one of their most successful seasons. Some of us had our first taste of chemistry and got a big bang out of it. It was here that Ron Devor and Carl Zetterquist discovered a hobby: Collecting test tubes. We soon elected our class officers which were - President, John Handzushg Vice-President, Dan Madelineg Secretary, Pat Koppg Treasurer, Madelon Mitchell. Our Homecoming attendant was Doris Carano and our Halloween candidate for queen was Bonnie Smith, We gave our first and last class party for the year at Thanksgiving. 107 Donald Nadeja The long awaited day finally arrived when Mr. Herrmann announced junior class play tryouts. That night, a group of eager juniors com- peted for the parts. Although this was our first attempt at real acting, the play, fFather Knows Besty, proved successful. The person who risked his own personal health was Jack Choppa, who reluctantly allowed himself to be doused with a bucket of water. In January, preparations began for what was to be one of the biggest events of our class history, our Junior-Senior Prom. Although the seniors tried every devised method to discover the theme of the dance it remained a well kept secret. At last our careful planning was put to use and our masterpiece emerged. We titled it Garden of Memories. Glenda Monroe Marilyn Mozzillo Alma Ruth Mundrs Richard Newell Georgia Nicholas Douglas Noderer Nadyne Oakley Gloria Oliu Judith Onesti Richard Oros Marlene Pagley . Shortly after this prom we said our good-byes to the class that had seen us through three years of growing up. It was difficult to see them graduate when we knew we would be the next class to be seated on the stage. We got the year off to a good start by electing capable class officers. They were as follows: Bill Dunmire, Presi- dentp Dave Bailey, Vice-Presidentg Carolyn Datko, Secretaryg and Kitty McKee, Treasurer. Bonnie Smith was chosen Homecoming Queen and our Halloween Queen candidate was Helen Maritch. The good start did not last long because the beginning of our senior year will probably be remembered with these words I think I've got the Flu. Ill Although many classmates were out with this sickness, we still held our play tryouts, and a cast was selected by Miss Christy, the new director. The play was a comedy entitled, Best Foot Forward. In spite of the epidemic, it proved to be a huge success. Christmas time again found the seniors decorating the gym for the traditional Christ- mas Formal. It provided a festive note to begin the holiday season. The seniors soon found themselves caught in the whirl of activities such as the ordering of name cards and pictures. Then came the pass- ing out of these pictures and name cards to our friends and classmates. We made orders for our caps and gowns and then came the asking of our favorite belle or beau to the Senior Dinner Dance. The juniors proved themselves to be capable and artistic and gave us a prom long to be remembered. The final dance of our high school years was the Sen- ior Farewell Dance given by the sophomores. The gym, decorated in our class colors, red and white, was a beautiful sight we seniors shall never forget. As our senior year drew to a close the traditional Baccalaureate service was given for us. After receiving the blessing of the school there was only one event left in our class history, GRADUATION . After years of waiting, we, the class of '58, found ourselves on the stage receiving our diplomas. Yes, our high school history has ended, but we do not think of that. We think of the future and the history yet to be made.
