Careers were begun of which only the first stage will terminate with graduation on Iune 2, 1939. Thirty-six of our class of eighty-four started out together in the first grade cmd have stuck together for twelve years. Bereck, Butler, Boren, Chufo, Cratsley, Davis, Evans fR.l, Fedor, Halliday, Hammoc, Heffner, Hopes, Iones lD.J, Iewell, Kuboff, Kovacich, Lupu, Malin, Mc- Kenzie, McMurray, .Moga, Moore fG.J, Moore fP.J, Neal, Papa, Price, Pagliassotti, Popa, Row- lands, Stevenson, Stewart, Sprague, Smith, Tribley fA.l, Walker and Wilson are charter mem- bers of the class. As we made our progress through the grades, astonishing our teachers with our great mental ability, we were joined by celebrated students from Youngstown, Coalburg, Struthers, Scienceville and Ridge. When transferred from the Roosevelt building to the High School building, we easily found our way around and settled down to work and play in our new environment. After two years, we found ourselves sufficiently educated to organize into a class. We chose for our president, Tom Smith, who remained president throughout our four years in high school. Phil Doughton was chosen vice-president and he, too, was elected each year for four successive years. To Gus Richmond we owe our thanks for his four years of help and guidance as our class advisor. Evelyn Iones and Bob Evans were two other very capable class officers. Our junior year was undoubtedly the most active in all our twelve years of history. As juniors we were busy selling pencils, magic slates and candy in preparation for that big event -The Iunior-Senior Banquet. Not wishing you to think that we used all our time for plays, dances and banquets, we must here insert that during each year in high school we were represented at Kent by such students as Atsberger, Bereck, gmighton, Earhart, Flick, Heffner, Herman, Kahl, Smith, Sprague, Stevenson, Tribley CDD and ison. And now that our history draws to a close and we have all agreed that it is a rough road that leads to the heights of greatness , let us not shirk our duty but be confident that, Great things thro' greatest hazards are achieved, And then they shine. The juniors have also been active in sports. R. McWilliams, Tom Corbin, B. Mauser, H. Iackson, E. Wylde, S. Katko, R. Mallorie and P. Knupp received letters for football, and R. Mallorie and E. Wylde received letters for basketball. lean Williams received a letter for cheerleading.. The class sponsored two dances one of which was a victory dance on the night of the Hubbard-Brookfield football game. The other was a Pop Ienk's Sugar Bowl dance and the committee did an excellent job of changing the gymnasium into a soda grille. Our advisor, Miss Wright, is to be congratulated on the excellent care she has taken of the business of the class. She has kept accurate accounts of the money spent and collected. The books balance to the very penny, something unusual for a junior class. The members of the class have sponsored roller skating parties, sold pencils, and put on a class play to raise money. The junior play, The Panther's Claw, was a huge success. In the cast were Eloise Dugan, Wanda Quigley, Bob Gray, Betty Wittenaur, Bessy Conn, Mary DePaul, Henrietta Clash, Dick Evans, Zelton McGinnis, Iack Tribbie, Charles Ferguson and Iack Bliss. A large per cent of the honor students come from the junior class. On the semester honor roll were E. Sechler, I. Williams, E. Dugan, W. Quigley, K. Bereck, H. Clash, A. DeCunto, M. DePaul, F. Diroll, M. Miklos, I. Morrison, E. Pucak, L. Wise, B. Gray, Z. McGinnis and F. Perrotta. The officers of the class are: President, R. Grayg vice-president, H. Lowry, secretary, Z. McGinnis, and treasurer,'E. Dugan. . The biggest event of the junior year was the banquet at which we had the pleasure of entertaining the seniors. On September 7, 1937, a very energetic freshmen class -entered Hubbard High School. On the roll were 156 names and from them we elected our freshmen class officers, who were: President, Iohn Katko, vice-president, Sherman Nash, secretary, jean MacDonald, and treas- urer, lack Lloyd. We elected Mr. MacDonald as our class advisor, .and chose red and white as our class colors. ln our freshmen year ll members of the class were members of -the band, 5 were mem- bers of the orchestra, 13 were members of the glee club, 16 were on the semester honor roll, and I. Katko was our only member on the football team. On Iune 10, 1938, 76 members of the freshmen class were graduated from Hubbard Iunior High School. On September 21, 1938, we elected our sophomore class officers. All of our freshmen offi- cers were re-elected. As sophomores we have 13 members in the band, 5 in the orchestra, 6 in the glee club, Daniel and Iohn Katko both members of the football team, and 18 listed on the semester honor roll. We sophomores are looking forward to our junior and senior years with great delight. .F Boo! Hoo! Hoo! Here we come-the youngest class in H. H. S. But now that we are acquainted and know our way around We are no longer cry babies, but are taking our place in the activities of our high school. Although we are the youngest, we think we have the best classy this is proved by our having more members on the honor roll than any other class. After the first six weeks of school had passed and we had had time to get acquainted with the new teachers and students, we elected our class advisor, Mr. Ballenger, and the fol- lowing class officers: President, George Evans, vice-president, Alvin March, secretary, Iune Tribley, and treasurer, Shirley Booth. With the help of Mr. Ballenger we held a Thanksgiving party, which was the first social gathering of our class. On December 28 we held a roller skating party for all members of the high school. Girard 12, Hubbard 0 October 1 The Eagles showed a much better brand of ball in this game, but Girard proved to be the bet- ter team. Hubbard threatened twice but couldn't shove the ball over. Hubbard 13, Howland 6 October 8 The Blue and White's first victory in l9 con- tests. Rowlands starred in this game. Their play- ing was so good that the Eagles didn't have to punt once. This victory gave the team confidence in themselves for future frays. Hubbard 13, Scienceville 0 October 15 The Hubbard gridders scored their second win in the Inter-Valley League, by soundly trouncing Scienceville. After last week's win the boys couldn't be stopped. Katko, Wylde and Iackson all scored for the Blue and White. Iackson's 70 yard run was the highlight of the contest. Fitch 12, Hubbard 6 October 29 After winning three straight, Hubbard jour- neyed to Fitch and was defeated. The Eagles just couldn't get going and fumbles were costly. Row- lands made the only score and looked good throughout the game. Hubbard 13. Brookfield 9 November 5 Hubbard soundly spanked their traditional rival. I. Katko and Mauser had the honor,of scoring the markers that defeated the I-Iilltoppers. Both scored on passes, Mauser going over as the gun, marking the end of the first half, went off. A great game and a smashing victory. Newton Falls 6, Hubbard 0 November 12 The Blue and White journeyed to Newton Falls bent on bringing home the League title. Cleveland Shaw Total .,,,4,,,,,,., ,3,,,C' The Hubbard High Eagles started off the season in good Iorm but illness and overconfi- dence beset their path several times during the 1938-39 season. After the Blue and White had conquered three of their first tour opponents, Tom Smith was lost to the team for the remainder of the campaign due to illness. His loss was sorely felt during many of the ensuing contests. At this time it was necessary to groom another to take his place and Bob Evans did so in fine style. Then as soon as the team got over Smith's absence, Mallorie had to sit outa tew games because of illness. Coach White had to rearrange his line-up time and again in the hope of effecting a winning combination. Tournament time rolled around, and the team finally rounded into championship form with Mallorie back and all the players showing lots of fight. Hubbard defeated their first two opponents at Youngstown-Ursuline and East-but were stopped by a fighting Rayen team. This did not keep them from going to the district tournament at Akron. There the Eagles downed Akron Hower, 21-20, by virtue ot Mallorie's toul shot with three seconds to go. How- ever, the Blue and White cagers couldn't do a thing against Cleveland Shaw on Goodyears' big gym. Nevertheless, this year's quint got farther in tournament play than a Hubbard team has in eleven years. Over the season's play the tour highest point-makers were: Evans, 202, Walker, 92, Row- lands, 70, and Mallorie, 51.
