o f With the realization that we are still very young in heart and experience; with the knowledge that with their counsel there is yet peace and love, and a deeper, calmer faith for us to seek: we gratefully dedicate this, the 1956 Cowboy, to our parents, teachers, and other citizens of the Hoyt community. Since the majority of us had attended grade school in the high school building, we were pretty well acquainted with the setup for high school. The freshmen this year were Doris Turley, Sandy Gillespie, Janice Rickel, Joyce Tuck, Grace Williams, Delores Rickel, Imogene Stolle, Nanette Pappan, Delores Nioce, Caroline Rose, Joan Ehrhart, Mildred Bolz, Gayle Stithem, Bill Carey, Lorraine Covert, and Shirley Eabb. Bill Hidy from Morganville entered our class during the year. Lorraine Covert left us to go to Washburn Rural and Shirley Babb went to Circleville. Our class officers were Delores Nioce, president; Gayle Stithem, vice-president; Janice Rickel, secretary-treasurer. We were initiated, as freshmen usually are, but our biggest thrill during this year was when two of the freshmen, Janice and Gayle, won the title of King and Queen of the carnival. Our sponsor was Mrs. V . R. Horn. Vie started our sophomore year in 1953 and again had fifteen members. Bill Hidy was missing as he had moved to Soldier, but Nancy Rickel from Burlingame had entered our class. During the year Bob Springer from Wetmore entered. Our officers were Delores Rickel, president; Gayle Stithem, vice- president; Delores Nioce, secretary-treasurer. Since there were so many girls in our class, only eight were chosen to serve at the Junior-Senior Banquet. Our class sextette won first rating at the County Music Festival in the spring which made us very happy. Mr. Bliss was our sponsor. When we started in as juniors, we found that we had lost Bob Springer. He had gone back to Wetmore, but in November Garry Wright from Perry joined us, and at the beginning of the second semester, Bonnie Bausch from Holton entered. This year our officers were Gayle Stithem, president; Mildred Bolz, vice-president; Sandy Gillespie, secretary; Doris Turley, treasurer. Two of the highlights of our junior year were the junior play, Hillbilly Weddin', and our Junior-Senior Banquet. The theme of the banquet was Hawaiian Nights. It was a lot of work, but everyone enjoyed doing his or her part. Mr. Haden was our sponsor. In the fall of 1955 when we started in as seniors, we had nineteen mem- bers. Victor Miller entered from Topeka, and Evelyn Beasterfeld from Esk- ridge joined us soon after school started. We lost Bill Carey and Evelyn Beasterfeld before the Thanksgiving holidays. Bill joined the Marine Corps and Evelyn returned to Eskridge, Garry Wright left at the end of the first semester as he moved to Meriden. This year the following classmates guided us through our senior activities: Grace Williams, president; Victor Miller, vice-president; Joyce Tuck, secretary; Janice Rickel, treasurer; Delores Rickel and Joyce Tuck, Student Council representatives. The most important events of this year were our Class Night, senior trip, and the Junior-Senior Banquet, and of course our graduation exercises. During this year the stu- dent body organized a Student Council on which seven seniors served. Mr. Thorpe was the sponsor as well as sponsor of our class. Thirteen of the students who started in as freshmen in Hoyt High back in 1952 will be graduated in this class. We have enjoyed our high school days, and we hope the seniors in years to come will have as much fun as we have had. We, the Seniors of 1956, being of sound memory and disposing mind and knowing our places will soon be taken by others, do hereby make and publish this our last High School Will and Testament: I, Joan Ehrhart, do will and bequeath my chubbiness to Charles Haines and my hair to Charlie. To Mr. Brown, we will the silence on the schoolbus going to games, and the luck of not having us in any of his classes. To Mr. Haden, we will our ability to be All Americans in sports, and our knowledge of history. To Mr. Barry, we wiU our many peaceful music periods, and our old glee club dresses. To Miss Barrett, we will our love of working on the annual, our ability to follow instructions carefully, and our many hours of studying, providing she does it all at night. To Hr. Thorpe, we will all of our hair, and our ability to argue and win. To dear old Hoyt High, we leave our many memories of all the exciting experiences we have had in the past four years. Signed and sealed in the presence of: 5 (r SEAL SPONSOR May 22, 1970 Dear Mr. Thorpe V hile traveling through Texas and the Western States in the year 1970, we ran across many of the '56 graduates and we thought you might be inter- ested in knowing their whereabouts. In Texas we found Imogene Stolle or rather Mrs. D. Zach. Imogene is operating a chick farm and raises 10,000 chicks a year. Her income is $10, 000 a month. Delbert works on holidays at Goodyear. We heard that Delores Rickel has taken up, as her career, lady wrestling. Her next bout is to be with Gorgeous George. We found Gayle Stithem playing pro-foctball and mak- ing all kinds of money for the All-False Teeth Co. Nanette Fappan is the proud oivner of a one-half million acre ranch. She spends her spare time riding bronchos and training them for cattle horses, Garry V right is half owner of the Studebaker Mfg. Co. He owns a $U0,000 Studebaker with souped up Model T. engine, 350 horse power, and leopard skin upholstery—all extra. Sandra Gillespie is a well known rodeo performer. She is champion of all the West in broncho busting. At a noted resort on the Gulf of Mexico, we found the very popular Janice Rickel modeling Bikini bathing suits, In her spare time she dives for pearls. Caroline Rose, now Mrs. Harold Williams, is the wife of a big time farmer, and is the mother of fourteen little, big timers. Doris Turley is a teacher in All-Boys College. She is very well liked by most of the boys. It seems that she gives them all A's and also the answers to their quizes. Delores Nioce is the president of her own art college, and it is reported that she will enroll only married girls along with the many boys. Last, we found Grace Williams in southern Texas in her small home where she is hard at work rearing her family of ten ornery Morris boys. They keep her very busy but, of course, she wouldn't trade them for ary other boys in Texas. After seeing all the Texans, we flew to California and found Bill Carey, our home town leatherneck, trying to make up his mind as to which he likes better, Wacs or Waves. Bill has been awarded five Congressional Medals of Honor by President Marilyn Monroe. Nancy Rickel is playing foot- ball for the Los . ngeles Rams. It seems that it is now legal for women to play football. She scores about five TD's a game when she doesn't play too hard. Bonnie Dausch is a well-known movie star. She teaches dancing to some of her friends, among whom we find Dean Olsen, her director and pro- ducer. Joan Lhrhart is a famous doctor and scientist. She has finally discovered a cure for the common cold. After leaving California, we ventured over the Pacific to Hawaii where we found Joyce Grass Skirt Tuck doing the hula in the biggest resort on the Islands. She gives all the big business men free coconuts. When we got back to Kansas, we found Mildred Bolz, now Mrs. Mil Holiday, the happy wife of a truck driver. Mildred goes with Bill on all his trips to keep him compary. Also, we found Victor Miller managing a girls' basket- ball team in Kansas City. He finds the work very enjoyable. We were pleasantly surprised to find how well the '56 seniors had succeeded. Sincerely Junior Class Ronnie Bausch President Richard levell V. Preparations for the homecoming were started on November 1. The student body elected five girls whose names were presented to the football boys w ho chose the queen and her attendants. Bonnie Bausch was chosen a s queen and the attendants were Janice Rickel, senior, and Judy Ungeman, sophomore. Bonnie, a senior, is a lovely brunette with hazel green eyes and medium height. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Bausch. Bonnie, Janice, and Judy were driven around the football field in a convertible. They were met at the car by their escorts, Oayle Stithem, Gerald Bausch, and David Spencer. They then proceded to the center of a heart formed by the Pep Club girls. Here the queen and her attendants were given corsages, and Bonnie was crowned queen by Mr. Thorpe, our principal. Bonnie was also given a miniature football,a gift from the cheerleaders, which was presented by Edith Plants. The final feature of the day was the homecoming dance in the evening held in the gym, which had been beautifully decorated in blue and white. During the dance Queen Bonnie and her attendants, Janice and Judy, attired in evening gowns of white, orchid, and rose, reigned on a throne, which had been prepared by the Pep Club girls. JOYCE TUCK Joyce is about average size with light brown hair, and hazel eyes. She has a very nice personality and is liked by everyone. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Tuck, who live on a farm east of Hoyt. As she is majoring in commerce this year, Joyce plans to do secretarial work when she graduates this spring. This year the Future Farmers of America decided to have an FFA Sweetheart contest and party. In October the boys chose the contestants—one girl from each class in high school. Mary Hrenchir, freshman, Jean Martin, sophomore, Darlene Spiker, Junior, and Joyce Tuck, senior, were chosen to compete in th is contest which was he Id at an assembly program on November lfc. The winner was to be the girl who performed the following tasks, pertaining to farm life, the best and in the shortest time: calling hogs, milking a cow, sawing lumber, and making a trough. The faculty was the Judges. All of the girls were farmers' daughters. The winner was kept a secret until the night of the party and dance on January I. The party was held in the FFA shop rooms which had been appropriately decorated in royal blue and gold, the FFA colors. During the evening the FFA Sweetheart, Joyce Tuck, was escorted to the throne by her escort, Gerald Bausch, and presented with a lovely white FFA Jacket with her name and the FFA emblem inscribed on it. Her attendants, Jean, Mary, and Darlene, were given heart-shaped necklaces with the FFA emblem by their escorts , Melvin Hardily John Dickinson, and Paul Shipman. The sweetheart and her attendants then reigned on the throne during the remainder of the evening. In September of 191 8 thirteen boys and girls began their education in the first grade at Hoyt Grade School, Miss Nellie Morissey was the teacher. The members of this class were Marcia Joy, Joan Dickinson, Mary Younger, Marlene Donahue, Janice Turner, Billy Fleischer, Gary Salts, Danny Rickel, Billy Holt, Larry Peterson, Gerri Lou Gooderl, Beverly and Teddy Timmons. Larry Peterson left during the year and went to the Sunbeam school in North Topeka. In the fall of 19i 9 we started our second year. Miss Nellie Morissey was again our teacher. Marlene Donahue went to Woburn for half a year and Teddy and Beverly Timmons left to attend school in Topeka. At the beginning of the 1950 school term, we had ten pupils in the third grade. Donna Falley entered during the year. Mrs. McDaniels was our teacher for the first semester and Mrs. Galliger taught the remaining part of the year. Late that year Wilma Cox entered our class. Then came 1951 and we were in our fourth year of school. Mrs. Gal- liger taught the first semester and Mrs. Bell completed the term. We lost Donna Falley who went to Meriden. Beth Carey entered our class in the middle of the year, coming from Louisiana. In the fall of 1952 with Mr. McCauley as our teacher, we entered the fifth grade which was in the high school building. At the beginning of this year we gained the following new pupils: Glenda Jones, Glen Everhart, Sarah Sinner, Gerald Albright, Bill Covert, Clyde Schwanke, and Bill Grant. Most of them were from South Hoyt rural school which had closed. Sarah Sinner left in the middle of the year. In the fall of 1953 we entered the sixth grade and our teacher was Mr. McCauley again. Kenneth Rosevelt enrolled, coming from Avondale in Topeka, also Marlene Cole who came from Woburn on January 26. Later in the year Joe Mattwaoshshe entered the class. This made nineteen pupils. In September 195U we had twenty-three pupils to start our seventh year. Mr. Spencer was our teacher. Patty Doud, Larry and Lewis Odgen were new pupils. We lost Marlene Cole, Ronnie Godfry, Larry and Lewis Odgen during the year. Danny and Jeanette Sipp entered during the latter part of the year and we ended with twenty-one pupils. In September of 1955 we entered our eighth and final year of grade school with an enrollment of nineteen students. Danny and Jeanette Sipp had moved from the district before the school term began. The students this year were Beth Carey, Marlene Donahue, Bill Grant, Mary Younger, Clyde Schwanke, Gary Salts, Kenneth Rosevelt, Glen Everhart, Glenda Jones, Danny Rickel, Marcia Joy, Billy Holt, Patty Doud, Joan Dickinson, Gerri Lou Goodrel, Billy Fleischer, Gerald Albright, Joe Mattwaoshshe, and Wilma Cox. The following class officers were elected: Gary Salts, presi- dent; Glen Everhart, vice president; Bill Fleischer, secretary; Marcia Joy, reporter. Everyone agrees that this has been a wonderful eight years of educa- tion and readiness for high school and that many pleasant memories of our grade school days will not be forgotten.
