As I settled back in my luxurious seat aboard a modern jet air liner, I glanced across the aisle and saw my old classmate of 1950, Billy Westerfeld. I immediately bom- barded him with questions about himself. He was going to South America to work as a foreman for Maurice Garnholz, another former classmate, now an engineer, who was build- ing a large dam across the Orinoco River in Venezuela. Also in Venezuela is Norman Kahre, who is a rich oil tycoon and owns a large rubber plantation. Just then we noticed who the stewardess was. It was a former classmate, Ruth Koelling. By chattering with her we found out that Arthur Lamczyk was piloting the plane. Letting Billy off at Venezuela we proceeded to Rome. Making a tour of the city, whom should I run into but Frances Selle, another clasmate, who was taking singing lessons from the great musician, Joaquino Garcoa. She is studying to become an opera singer. Having completed most of my trip around the world we landed in Los Angeles. As I went into a very large department store I noticed the name over the entrance, Miss Jeanette Reinkensmeyer's Department Store. I wanted to see Jeanette but she was out-on business. As I continued across the United States, the plane had to make a forced landing in a large field. Was I surprised to see Kenneth Eichmeyer who ran a cattle ranch consis- ting of four thousand cattle. Fixing the trouble, Arthur soon had the plane in flight. Reclining back in my seat, I was happy to think that of the Hoyleton Class of 1950, all seemed to be doing very well. .Wlaflzxe ine! R E lk! Hi-Lites FRESHMEN IN ITIATION The freshmen initiation lasted from September 21 to 23. For three days they were required to endure the usual tortures forced upon them by the sophomores. Friday evening after additional punishments, such as: going through the paddling machine, walking the plank, boxing each other while blind folded, and facing a firing squad, they were received as full iiedged citizens of H.H.S.. After this, all high school students enjoyed a weiner roast at the expense of the sophomores. G.A.A. HAYRIDE On October 7, 1949, the G.A.A. sponsored a hay ride for the members and their guests. All climbed upon one large wagon which was plentifully supplied with hay. After a long ride over the network of roads around Hoyleton and a vigorous hay fight, all were of the same opinion that it was time for refreshments. Everyone showed their appreciation for the time and work of the refres'hment committee by consuming a large amount of sandwiches and cokes. After this the party broke up and those who had, been present started home tired but happy. HALLOWEEN PARTY If there were ghosts and goblins they most certainly would have been present at the High School Halloween Party. To reduce the feeling of fear, a few games were played while part of the recreation committee ventured out to relocate the loot of Captain Kidd. A short time later the different groups started out to try and claim the hidden treasurers. The committee had lost notes of direction on the way which enabled one group to strike it rich. Food in keeping with the occasion was served to pacify the defeated and heighten the spirits of the victors. By now it was getting late and everyone wanted to return home before the spooks started on their nightly jaunts. O fb f GA Hi-Lites OPEN HOUSE From November 6-11 we observed American Education Week in our school. Posters were displayed in public places and all ,parents received invitations to attend our classes on designated days of the week. The rooms made displays for the various class activities. On Wednesday, November 8th, a special program was given. Guest speaker for the evening was Dr. H. J. Long. Also on the program were several selections by the band. During the evening the public was free to inspect the classrooms. CHRISTMAS PARTY The Saturday evening before Christmas the high school students held their annual Christmas party. The recreation committee started the evening by leading the group in active games. When the potential energy of the teen-agers was reduced to a minimum amount, the K.P. depart- ment announced that it was time to report to the kitchen. The process of eating was stopped and looks of awe and amazement appeared upon the students' faces when Mrs. Deaton walked in with a distinguished guest. Where she found Santa Claus CD.S.j we do not know, but the jolly fellow distributed the many presents to the impatient and curious group. The students then left, supposedly to go home, after enjoying a wonderful evening. BASKETBALL BANQUET On April 29, the High School and Grade School basketball squads geiielathe honored guests at the informal banquet, sponsored by the During the course of the evening, Mr. Deaton awarded Basketball and Band Letters. The party ended by playing games which had been prepared by the recreation committee. -A A Y-,,. ,W ,. .U . A. .. .-4.,-.. ..AlnL.. . .-. PHYS ED High School Athletics BASKETBALL Basketball this year could be considered as successful. In High School, with only nine boys enrolled, all of which were on the squad, we came through with a ten won-nine lost record. Most of our opponents had advantage of size and age, but the spirit of determination to win paid dividends to our fighting five. Cotton Top Garnholz came through as the highest scorer for the season with 182 points. Charles Aussieker took the honors in making the highest percentage of his free throws f.444l. The basketball squad consisted of the following nine boys: Charles Aussieker, Kenneth Eickmeyer, Maurice Garnholz, Roger Hake, Norman Kahre, Arthur Lamczyk, Louis Sphere, David Spenner, Billy Westerfeld. The three cheerleaders this year were: Ruth Koelling, Marilyn N ierman, and Jeanette Reinkensmeyer. THUNDERBOLTS RECORD Woodlawn ........ ............ H oyleton .....
