.-rf--. wuur-Y ' ' Grade School Athletics 1947 TRACK AND FIELD The 1947 season saw our team rack up a .500 average. We competed in four meets and won two of them. Team members and letter winners were John Hines, Orville Sensel, Virgil Wehking, Kent Nierman, Walter Hongsermeier, Maurice Garnholz, and Roger Hake. We opened our season on April 11 in a triangular meet at Carlyle with them and St. Marys. The final totals found us last. Carlyle had 74 points to win, St. Marys had 26 for second and we had 17. Our next meet was a dual meet at Ashley. We defeated our hosts by a 49 to 39 score. Then on April 30, we finished last again in a quadrangular meet at Nashville. The final count showed Carlyle first with 87 points, Nash- ville second with 62 points, New Minden third with 23 points, and us last with 16 points. The high point of our season came in the first annual Oil Belt Con- ference meet held at Young School on May 9, 1947. Our team won eight out of ten possible first place awards, a third place, and a fifth place. This gave us a total of 44 points and the first place trophy. Our points werescored by John Hines who took firsts in the 100 yard dash, 220 yard dash, and broad jumpg Orville Sensel, who took firsts in the base- ball throw, the 440 yard run, and the 50 yard dash, Kent Nierman, who took first in the shotg and our relay team composed of Walter Hongser- meier, Kent Nierman, Orville Sensel, and John Hines, which also placed first. Maurice Garnholz placed third in the pole vault, and Virgil Wehking placed fifth in the high jump to complete our scoring. 1947 SOFTBALL The final records of the 1947 season show that our team won four and lost two of its regularly scheduled games. Our conference record was 3 wins and 2 losses and allowed us to finish in the runner-up spot behind Young School, the conference champion. Members of our team were Maurice Garnholz, Ervin Chesney, Fred Cunningham, Albert Kleiboeker, John Hines, Walter Hongsermeier, Roger Hake, Billy Westerfeld, Geo. Linze, Eugene Klie, and Robert Hake. All but Eugene and Robert won letters. Our season's record is as follows: Hoyleton 3 Trinity Lutheran 2 Young 17 Hoyleton 6 Shannafelt 8 Hoyleton 5 Hoyleton p 16 Vernon 10 Hoyleton 8 Antioch 5 Hoyleton 20 Irvington 2
