The Indians had high expectations as they only lost four starters from last year’s 5-4 team and were returning eleven experienced seniors. We had a great year, but it ended with a let down, said head volleyball coach, Kathy Bergin. The spikers won 20 matches, which has never been done before at Hoxie High. When coach Bergin came, they won 5 matches and everyone thought that was super. Although the team won 20 mat- ches this year, they lost a close match with Oberlin at the finals at sub-state. Coach Bergin commented, We placed 2nd again and I hate it! For the past 4 years the Indian spikers have placed 2nd at sub-state. Coach Bergin is looking forward to next year and plans on having another strong team. The girls placed 2nd at sub-state after a hard fought match against Oberlin. f Volleyball 37 7vuiitut4 PCace Sec M t at Sa -State The Hoxie Indians boys’ basketball team fell short of a trip to the state tournament in Hutchinson this year but none-the-less turned in an excellent season as they ended the year with 17 wins and 6 losses of which in- cluded the championship of the Oberlin Invitational Tournament and second place at sub-state. Although they failed to reach their goal of a state championship, they did place third. The Indians were led by a state championship performance by Lance Shepard. Shane Ochs also made an excellent showing by placing second. Les Brown and Brian Leopold each took home a third place medal, and Mike Porsch placed fourth. To obtain these goals an athlete must make a commit- ment to push himself (or herself) to his (or her) full potential. Practices conducted by Jim Walden, Randy Kaufman, Greg Berens, and Connie Pontious were grueling, with plyometrics, weights, throwing, and extensive running, but the will to excel brought everyone back to practice day after day. Track at HHS was not always work — fun was included every so often, such as: climbing sand hills on a windy day and then jumping off, and those “fun track meets. Through personal vigor and team effort, goals were met and a record was broken. Patti Ziegler broke her own record in shot put with a throw of 44'. Athletes of the Year Michaela Niblock, senior, was named female athlete of the year for 1988. She participated in volleyball, basketball, and track. In volleyball she was named Most Valuable Player and was elected to the All League Team. In basketball Michaela was the Most Valuable Girl and made the All League Team. Also she was elected to the Quinter All Tournament Team and the Oberlin All Tournament Team. Michaela participated in track and was nominated most inspirational by her peers. Les Brown, senior, was named male athlete of the year for 1988. He participated in football, wrestling, and track. In foot- ball he made the All League second Team at center. In wrestl- ing, Les made the Salina Journal Honorable Mention All State Team. He was chosen to wrestle in the All State Team dual and in the KWCA All Star dual. Les placed third at State at 185 pounds. In the 1988 wrestling season, Les had the most falls and the most wins. Judge Roy Bean, played by Todd Tonkin, officiates the trial and is constantly reminded of his love for Miss Lily. Lily faces a choice of either marry- ing the judge, or allowing an inno- cent young man to die. There IS a wedding, but it’s Zerelda (J. J.
