Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1984 volume:

A man ought to desire that which is genuine instead of that which is artificial. Long ago there was no such thing as a mixture of earths to make paint. There were only three colors of native earth paint — Red, White, and Black. These could be obtained only in certain Places. Senior Girls flaunt it. and Rock-n-RoIl The Christmas spirit, with tinsel and mistletoe added to the flavor of Snoball on Dec. 17. T dance, annually sponsored by STUCO, was a success. Most of the school turned out for dance, some had dates and others came with friends. It was a night filled with romance and rock-n-roll. Max Koster was named the 1983 Snoball King and crowned Dala Harwerth as his Queen Dan Campbell and Donata Geerdes were the attendants. Knights of the Turntable from Kearney NE D.J.'d the dance. Playing top songs and requests, they rocked the night away Having fun guys? 11 Down the Yellow Brick Road Traveling along the yellow brick road on their way to see the Wizard of Oz (Stephe Ramer) are Coward- ly Lion (Marty Gilbert), Scarecrow (Tim Coulter), Tinman (Zack Kauk), and Dorothy (Data Harwerth). They are huddled in fear when the Wicked Witch (Susan Schaffer) threatens to rob Dorothy of her ruby slippers. The remaining characters are Uncle Henry (Gary Bainter), Aunt Em (Margaret Kaus), Glenda the Good Witch (Peggy Peters), Growlie (Steve Oelke), Munchkin Mayor (Darin Richmeier), Munchkin Barrister (Juanita Kaus). The Tornado Dancers, Flying Monkeys, Citizens of Oz and Guards are Brenda Bainter, Jan Frazey, Mary Gilbert, Shelli Gosser, Mary Beth Hinger, Karen James, Kim Kauk, Lisa Kauk, Melinda Kirby, Daresa Lewis, Doug Lewis, David Neff, Brenda Richards, Teresa Richards, Cherri Sager, Susan Selbe, Chris Sewell, Steve Sewell, Dan Taylor, Russ Taylor, Sherri Wagg. Jeff Gumm directed the production and Cindy Schnelle was the accompanist. A special thanks goes to Mr. Barnes for building the sets, Cheryl Schwarz for choreographing the dances, and Sharon Gumm for doing the costuming. Who'd think a little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness? cackles the witch (Susan Schaffer). Guards (Doug Lewis and Sherri Wagg), Dorothy (Dala Harwerth), Cowardly Lion (Marty Gilbert). Tinman (Zack Kauk), Scarecrow (Tim Coulter), look on in horror as the Wicked Witch slowly melts. Now they can take the witch's broom to the Wizard and hopefully he will grant the Scarecrow a brain, the Cowardly Lion a medal for courage, the Tinman a heart, and Dorothy a way back home to Kansas. 12 The cast takes their final bow. Tinman looks for a heart. Ma. I'm going to find Dorothy. All, that is, except Mom (Lisa Pierce) and Peggy (Darla Hockersmith) who would appreciate a less-athletic minded family. Friday night is the big game with Northview in which Central has to win or Coach Pennywinner (Dennis Hedge) will lose his job. A couple of the star players of the team get sick as well as Coach by Friday. When the game starts, Buzz (Terry Spresser) and Coach are at home listening. The announcers (Jeff Pratt and Zack Kauk) declare near the end of the game that Buzz, 13, scored a touchdown then wins the game for Central! As the audience puzzles over where Buzz is, we find out that it was really Peggy that scored for the Frogs. The crowd gathers for a party after the game at the Pennywinner’s to congratulate Coach and Buzz which wraps up the play. Pratt, Harry Joe Pratt Casers Have Key to Future Success Patience, stamina, endurance and sheer guts were some of the qualities and improvements of the 1983-84 HHS Boys Basketball Team. Each member improved in more than one way during the season which is the key to future success. Since the varsity, junior var- sity and freshmen had a limited number of wins, they showed more perseverance than any other team they came against. It takes a great ball player to keep bouncing back after each loss. This year’s award winners were: Lance Krannawitter — team cap- tain; David Neff — most improved, most valuable, and most rebounds; Doug Geerdes — best free throws (69 per cent); and Neil Taylor — most valuable JV player. This year’s lettermen were: Marty Gilbert, Max Koster, Lance Kran- nawitter, David Bieker, David Neff, Doug Geerdes, and Kevin Krannawitter. Coach Bergin believes that each player gained valuable playing experience. During the season, six games were lost by seven points or less. “I think we will be able to win those close games next year,” commented Bergin. Out of eight letterwinners, only two were seniors and the other six started at some point during the year. “I think the girls can definitely look forward to a good season next year,” said Bergin. Voted Most Valuable Player for the 1983-84 season was junior Mindy Niblock. Mary Gilbert won the Outstanding Defense Award. Most Inspirational Player was Kay Eland. Rhonda Geerdes was voted Most Valuable JV Player. LeeAnn Schlageck was awarded Most Improved Player. Setting new records, Mary Gilbert had 68 steals and 47 assists. Kevin Gosser, Ralph Zerr, Vic Winter, Mike Sample. Robert Lovin. Third Row; Doug Lewis, Mike Wag- gener, Eric Becker. Gary Bainter, Ed Fringer, Dan Fringer. “The 1983-84 wrestling season was an up hill battle all the way,” said Head Coach Robert Lovin, who was assisted by Kirk Baker. Having a small squad of only 18 boys made it necessary for some boys to shed several pounds to enable Hoxie to field a complete team, felt Coach Lovin. Hoxie sent six grapplers to the state tournament. The seventh place team consisted of Mike Gilliland, two-time 155 lb. state champ, and Jeff Schippers, fourth place medalist. Others competing were, John Schamberger, 132 lbs. and 98 pounder Mike Sample, Richard Rietcheck, 145 lbs., and Darrell Sample at 112 lbs. Special awards were given to Mike Gilliland, who had the most wins, going undefeated for his second consecutive year; Jeff Schippers, most falls; John Schamberger, most improved; and voted most inspirational, Ralph Zerr. 88 Jeff receives his fourth place medal at state. 1. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON The HHS Debate Team emerged from the 1983-84 debate season with Hoxie’s first State Debate Cham- pionship. After winning the Regional Championship at Lakin with a record of 13-3, the debaters advanced to the State Tournament held at Washburn University of Topeka. They finished the State Tournament with an overall record of 12-2 which proved to be good enough for a State Championship. Debating on the affirmative side at state for Hoxie and finishing with a 7-0 record were Brett Leopold and Eric Smith. Brett had perfect speaker points through all seven rounds. Doug Kaba and Stacey Schwarz debated negatively for Hoxie. They finished with a record of 5-2. In the final round of debate, they defeated the Silver Lake affirmative, giving them their only loss of the tournament. Serving as alternates at state were Liza Kauk, Mary Beth Hinger and Steve Schaffer. Regular season tournament activity brought home six trophies. Doug Kaba and Stacey Schwarz placed first at Ulysses and third at Junction City. Brett Leopold, Eric Smith and Steve Schaffer also placed third at Junc- tion City and third at Satanta. Steve Schaffer and Eric Smith placed second at Scott City, and the four- speaker team of Doug Kaba, Stacey Schwarz, Brett Leopold and Mary Beth Hinger placed first. The topic for the year was: “Resolved that the United States should establish uniform rules governing the procedures of all criminal courts in the nation.” 1984 marks the 11th consecutive year that Coach Benny Rosell has qualified debate teams for state com- petition. This is an honor that very few coaches can ever hope to achieve. “I had always wondered what it would feel like to be debate champions in the state. Now I know. It’s a great feeling! We all had fun. ‘Next on the list for the yr. was Degrees Nite. As we went about to each different session, we either got it right or wrong. If we were to get it wrong, that was one less part of the strawberry shortcake we received. It’s tough eating w out a spoon! On Nov. 9, we traveled to Colby for Fall Conference in which Hoxie was in charge of door prizes. ‘This year for a moneymaking project, the club sold tupperware. For three weeks, the girls played their roles as saleswomen and sold over a thousand dollars. They had to sell over $30 to go to St. Meeting. As Christmas neared, we all drew for secret pals. As a week and a half passed, we received various notes and candies from our pals. To end it all, Dec. 15 we met for a par- ty to decorate the teachers’ doors, swing at a pinata, and wait for Santa Claus to come and deliver our gifts. Mrs. Oelke even sat on his lap to tell him her Christmas wish; diamonds! ‘For a community project, the club painted the pep club part of the stadium with a new coat of red and white stripes. ‘As the club participated in National FHA Week Feb. 13-17, they had a Valentine’s party on the 8th, and had contests during the next week. Monday — hushbuttons for guys; Tuesday — dress up red and white day; Wednesday — candy hearts in a jar guess; Thursday — sweetheart foodsale; and Friday — sweetest legs contest. ‘This year Jennings hosted District Elections at Clayton on Feb. 22. Those attending were Tammy Taylor, Donata Geerdes, Chris Sewell, and Sharon Schaffer. The most worked for event of the year came on March 30. The State Meeting was held in Salina this year. The group went down on the 29th and shopped and went to the movies, “Footloose” and “Splash.” Then the next day, the group of 35 attended the meeting held in the Bicentennial Center and then ventured home after it was all over. In order to go, the girls must have sold $30 tupperware and earned their Jr. Degree. ‘Together with the Kayettes, the FHA helped host the Spring Tea entitled “Paint Yourself a Rainbow.” At the end of the year on May 8th, the club put on the Ma, Pa, and Me potluck banquet to honor their parents, install new officers and cabinet, and recognize Jr. and Chapter Degree recipients. The year in total was fun and exciting. The relaxed cabinet. FR (L-R) Cherri Sager, Stacey Schwarz, Susan Schaffer (VP). Margaret Kaus (Seer), Annette Reitcheck. SR — Linda Pratt (Pres). During the 1983-84 year the Kayettes showed their appreciation to the teachers by making birthday cakes for them. They made special things for the Senior Citizens and visited them on special occasions. Throughout the Homecoming Week the club contributed to the spirit by selling mums. The an- nual Greenery Sale was held along with concessions and Valentine's Day Car- nations to help out with the funds. The Kayettes also sold candy for the Kidney Foundation and sponsored a lit- tle boy from Africa. They attended Regional Conference and the Unit Con- ference which was held at Hoxie. Membership in NHS is based upon excellence in four areas: scholarship, leadership, service and character. Officers for this year were: Peggy Peters — president, Tammy Taylor — vice presi- dent, Brenda McCormick — secretary treasurer and Margaret Kaus — STUCO representative. The group worked hard by selling raffle tickets for cakes at some home basketball games, having bake sales, holding a car wash, and having a yard sale. The NHS would like to thank all those who supported them in their money-making efforts. After school was out, the seniors en- joyed a trip to the Ozarks. Four seniors were unable to go because of conflicting schedules but the others went. Don and Bette James were the trip sponsors and drivers. They all stayed in Eureka Springs, Arkansas and toured the Currey Art Gallery, walked through Onyx Cave, rode a steam engine train and saw the Great Pas- sion Play.
