1973 Hoxie High School Hoxie, Kansas 67740 eucome Etuf Tt DlAOjjjLjjip Editors: Kaylene Farber Tammy Adams Carolyn Pratt Day by Day 2 3 6 7 The journalism classes feel it is time that everyone understands the true meaning of winter count and why it was chosen as our yearbook title. Among the plains Indians, pic- ture writing helped aid memory and communicate ideas. A calendar known as the winter count” was kept in the form of a series of pic- tures painted on buffalo hides. The Kiowa calendar pictured above cov- ered a period of 37 months, from July 1889 to July 1 892. The picture was obtained from the National Anthropological Archives of the Smithsonian Institute. This year’s cover was designed by Vic William, Carolyn Pratt and Veva Adams. The editors combined these entries in a cover contest to graphi- cally present a symbolic picture of the Indians' activities at HHS. 8 9 1. Mech. Drawing hard at work. 2. Sr. Math listens to Kem. 3.
