Warren, Ohm Zzfrrwzfrd Today we follow the precepts and tradi- tions laid down by those who have traveled before us on the sometimes difficult path of learning. We have come to respect the wis- dom and experience of our predecessors, and we have learned to value the written records of the many people who have formed and con- tributed to our American society. Now we ap- proach the time when we ourselves must im- part knowledge to those who follow us, We who are to be tomorrow's leaders must never stop learning, and we must begin to add our own small part to our society. Throughout his- tory it has been so, each succeeding genera- tion contributes its experience to those who follow. Thus does mankind advance itself. The l96O Scroll staff presents this pic- torial review of our last year at Howland. We invite you to join our Scribe who will show you the various segments of our life in the Halls of Howland. Sports, dances, friendships, and the many other aspects of school life all supplement our scholastic achievements to help make us well-rounded individuals. Al- though we believe it impossible to capture the spirit of Howland on paper, if we are able to record some of the events of our senior year within these covers, our pi 'nose will have been fulfilled. I , l I' At the Christmas program put on by the Senior and Junior bands, parents and friends were treated to an evening of delightful music at the Hanson Gymnasium. Cable Introduction . U Seniors The Class of l96O entered Howland as fresh- men in l956 and soon became acquainted with high school life. We have taken an active part in school activities. Members of our class have gained recognition in scholarship, leader- ship, athletics, and community affairs, which have all added to the prestige of Howland High School. As a class we have shown won- derful school spirit and our willingness to co- operate has helped to make all our activities successful ones. We have enjoyed such annual events os the Freshman Class Party, the Soph- omore-Junior-Senior Dance, and the Junior- Senior Prom. Our Prom, using Cinderella as the theme, proved to be one of the most gala of all the Proms ever held at Howland. This year we are busily engaged in many and var- ied activities ranging from taking scholarship tests in all forms, to signing senior pictures. ln a short while we will climax our four years of high school life. Though there is a note of sorrow in each of our hearts upon leaving Howland, we each know that Commencement is not only an ending of one career, but also the beginning of another. Whether we pursue a higher education or secure an occupation, we the Seniors of l96O will carry with us the principles of scholarship, leadership, good sportsmanship, and service into all of our fu- ture endeavors. One of the most important decisions every senior has to make is what to do after high school. Fred Miller and Ann Williams have each made several trips to the guidance office to talk to Miss Fredricks and to look through catalogs from different colleges, trying to plan their respective futures. Serving as Junior officers for the past year were: Coral Love, Secretaryj Gerrie Bracken, Vice President, Mike Atkins, President, Sue Vannelli, Treasurer. juuirfrs Junior year is considered by many to be the hap- piest year of school. The majority of students are participating in clubs, many have become leaders. Driver training, health classes, and varsity basket- ball are new experiences. Junior-senior rivalry is born. The hub of Howland's special functions is cen- tered around the junior class. The annual TWIRP week, held in late winter, comes to a climax with the Twirp Dance sponsored by the juniors. Second biggest dance of the year, the Christmas Formal, is also in charge of this class. Their best effort of the year is the all-night prom featuring professional band and entertainment, excellent food and games, and highlighted by the crowning of the queen. Toward the end of the l96O school year, juniors will begin looking forward to next year when, as seniors, they assume the full responsibility of their positions. They have joined enthusiastically with their fellow students in supporting school record hops, basketball games and other special events. The high point of the class's first year as full- fledged high school students is their first self- sponsored dance. The Sophomore-Junior-Senior Dance presented each year by the sophomores, was an enter- taining event on the school calendar. Begin- ning early in November, sophomore officers made tentative plans for their dance. As the year comes to a close, sophomores leave behind biology and geometry, which will be replaced next year by chemistry and alge- bra. Their one big dance will be replaced by many more. This year's sophomore class looks wistfully back on pleasant memories and for- ward to the coming year with apprehension. Tom Albrecht Z T -I -- ,,.. They find that becoming accustomed to the routine of changing classes, studying for scholarship tests, and adapting to their new social life, is one step on the road to maturity. The freshmen look forward to their next years at Howland with more an- ticipation than does any other class. Their next three years will be busy and challenging to all. l . . . im 1 , Wiflil' eigisffxsh ,IL fb?-lr2i'6'?5 t liiwflliil iifitwfvf if-A li.: Sggigfsz' -iii? f . if .igpffzzx - ' f'!:.,. is ' '- fiffiwffi , fi P?' :: 5E5' ff 1322 33-r?,sgQ ,.fi ,.f. jeg ,A ,mf - 41: 5' 'X B U V 55.11 fi.,,.,'jQi, k3'1,.,fGl?Eil5t5l5?-wi - ss Q tl Hr' gczikog--f .. ,A .,.. .. , i 5 l fe 3, 55 7 Ki K wfif K M 1 t iw 243. 2255157 x Jwfs:.fs,'rs L 2 -g5:',,::Q' - . we :fftinifzla at wfiif sfti P-5: is'f2afiEsl'l-' .1-,L I': ::,E . 5si.'W'fZ .N-,,-,,, :::'.::,5i,-E2i2.1Erg,: ,ilveilszli ' E'LEE3::. 5-'Mawr' FY . - Lewi s . . Dzlucv The Hanson Gymnasium was trans- formed into a sugar-coated candy- land early in December for the Sophomore sponsored dance. Danc- ing, of course, was the order of the evening. Suddenly at 9:45 there was a fanfare, a hush, and a great deal of anticipation. The master of cere- monies said, Will Sandy Stull please come forward? She was then crowned, Sandy, Queen of Candy. A round of applause, a royalty dance, then refreshments were next on the program for the evening. All this was a result of the brilliant planning and execution of the Soph- omore, Junior, Senior Dance. We only regret that no pictures of the dance itself were available at the time of printing, Head decorators for the Sophomore - Junior - Senior Dance are busily turning out gingerbread men and candy houses in the art room. The superb effect was achieved by juniors who gave up part of their long awaited vacation to plan and execute this highly successful formal. There was time out for refreshments, which were served by the junior class mothers. At l l:3O, the king, Dick Abruzzi, was crowned. Junior attendants were Mike Atkins and Paul Waddell. The aides in the junior high office have these same duties in addition to collecting attend- ance slips and counting tax stamps. These girls are obtaining valuable secretarial ex- perience by actuallv performing these duties. Visual ,flidfs Educators have found that tilms and record- ings are often a valuable aid to instruction. It told the story of the station owner's struggle to pay off a mortgage and keep the sta- tion. The operetta, a musical comedy, was the subject of a great deal of work by Mrs. Polley and the A'Cap- pella. In addition, Mr. Hageman, Mr. Alexander, Mr. Thomas, and the orchestra all contributed much time and effort toward its success. The operetta was well-liked by ev- eryone who saw it. The A'CappelIa is to be congratulated for a fine job. This great group of fellows truly added some spice to the operetta with their deep forceful voices. lm! The People merely Players Seuier Play An innovation in stage production at Howland was performed by the seniors this year. Papa is All , a play written in theatre-in-the-round, centered around a Pennsylvania Dutch-Mennonite family. This three act production was performed with- out scenery and with very few props. The success of it was due to the ex- cellent acting of the six members of the cast, Ronnie Kapcsos, Mari- lyn Kay, Carole Sindledecker, Dave Leatherberry, Hugh Howard, and Shirley Taylor. Mr. Hageman, the director, expressed his approval of the first presentation of this type at Howland. At the start of the campaign, we took an early lead in the league race and stayed in con- tention for the league title until the last two games of the season. Our most important victory was a spec- tacular sudden death overtime victory over the highly regarded Newton Falls squad. After the Newton Falls conquest, we won a very important rematch with Brookfield on our home floor. Six seniors played prominent roles in the success of our team. They were Dick Abruzzi, Reynolds Black- burn, Gerald Day, Gordie Leece, Jim Nycum, and Dave Wise. Nycum and Abruzzi led the well balanced attack with over 300 and 200 points respectively. Old Han lfmdcr Home Cure for Juveniles Not long ago a New York City Judge wrote to the New York Times saying that in the I7 years he had been on the bench not one Chinese teen- ager had been brought before him on a juvenile delinquency charge. P. H. Chang, Chinese Consul-General in New York, was asked to comment. He said, I have heard this story many times from many judges. I will tell you why I think this is so. Filial piety is a cardinal virtue my people have brought over from China that was free. A CHINESE child, no matter where he lives, is brought up to recog- nize that he cannot shame his parents. Before a Chinese child makes a move, he stops to think what the reaction of his parents will be. Will they be proud, or will they be ashamed? Above all other things, the Chinese teen-ager is anxious to please his parents. The amazing record of the Chinese children and young people shows that it is in the home that the cure for juveniledelinquency will be found- and in no other place.-Kosciusko CMiss.l Star-Herald Today's Best Investment is Howland Real Estate.
