His aunt had picked Carlotta Beard for him, but Carlotta was in love with Franklin Sanderson, manager of the hotel where everyone was visiting, and Drew was in love with the hotel stenographer, Flo Ran- dolph. To complicate matters still further, Franklin's mother had promised him to Sadie Sutton, a village maiden. At this time, Miss Venus, the Goddess of Love and Beauty appears. She is the perfect girl, who knows nothing but the truthg and her candor is sometimes alarming to the mortals. She succeeds in adjusting the many love affairs so that everyone ends up with the right person. Miss Venus, or Miss Starlight , as Drew called her, existed only in his imaginationg for as Miss Starlightl' said: The perfect person exists only through the eyes of true lovef' Mrs. Polley was the director, assisted by Miss Lydia Zahariou. 43 CAST Drew Crane ........... J . , . . , . . ' 5 X Graduation TJ B I Senior Class Histor In early September, along with all the underclassmen, close to 100 Seniors returned to the hallowed halls of Howland. We were determined to leave our mark this year, as we thought we would have the run of the school and lots of time to do great things. However, soon after we had got things organized and having elected Ron Crawford, president g Gene Urey, vice-president, Pat Andrella, secretary 5 and Emilie Ghisea as treasurer of the Senior Class, we chose Knowledge in youth is wisdom in old age as our motto, gold and white as our class colors, and bronze mums as our class flower 3 then we were caught up in the mad rush caused by a combination of chemistry, term papers, Macbeth, and the senior play. We quickly realized that our last year wasn't going to be all play and no work. Soliciting for Scroll ads was fun, and we discovered how easy it was to get out of school every afternoon 5 but oh! the homework we were missing! We journeyed to Westminster College with Mrs. Johnson to watch Macbeth grow a few grey hairs as his misdeeds caught up with him once more, and several of us were inspired by this to do a wonderful job in the operetta, Miss Starlight, which was given by the A Cappella. Now everyone was hunting desperately for a job, because Christmas was coming, and we had presents to buy. This began the first of many requests for money for senior pictures arrived at Christmas time. Some of us were going to give our likenesses as presents. The mad rush of signing pictures for everyone soon occurred, and several of our number have not yet recovered from the severe cases of writer's cramp brought on by this ordeal. After the Christmas Formal where we danced to the music of Bob Alexander's Orchestra we settled down to a few weeks of well-deserved rest before the end of the semester. However we had forgotten the senior scholarship test! This threw us into a desperate frenzy, because we had all intended to spend at least two months studying for this, and now we would have less than two weeks in which to study. A pall of gloom settled over the senior end of the hall, and silence descended, while everyone studied-at least it looked as if we were studying. Some of use were slowly and silently giving way under the strain. The day of The Test dawned, and each of us hoped he wouldn't be the lowest in the class. When we emerged from the testroom, we were greeted with the shocking news-finals next week! At this time we lost several members who couldn't take this, too. The survivors found that these finals were fairly easy-the teachers had taken pity on us. Suddenly we realized how little time we had left. We had time to watch Larry Griflith, Denny Wise, Ron Crawford, and Jim Wilsman play in some thrilling basketball games, and we yelled louder for our team than we had thought humanly possible. Somehow we realized that basketball wouldn't be the same next year, when we returned as alumni to watch the games. As soon as basketball season ended, the boys began to shy away from the girls, or if you prefer, the girls began to stalk the boys. It was time for the annual Twirp Dance, and the girls were exercising their privilege of asking The Boy. We seniors watched the procedure with amusement until some of us were involved, too. Bruce Williams, escorted by Marilyn Salak, was crowned as Knight of the Nightf, After the smoke cleared, we found that several new romances had begun. Romances or not, we still had to do homework, so we once more became buried in stacks of books while we gave book reports, wrote themes, studied French, and got ready for the scholarship tests in April. Our members who were in band and A Cappella were beginning to complain about the strenuous rehearsals for the contest which were approaching 3 and almost everyone came to a standstill, much to our teachers' exasperation. Throughout the school, we heard complaints about the lack of studiousness on our part-we just didn't seem to care. As contest time drew near, none of us were in class enough to hear anything, even the complaints. Our work paid in music for we came back with top ratings from the State. All this time, we had been working on application blanks for colleges, universities, hospitals, and special training schools. Ten of us-Gene, Jane, Phoebe, Ronnie, Lucinda, Mariellen, Willy, Emilie, Denny, and Larry-were honored with scholarships. Graduation was growing near. But just as we began to regret having to graduate so soon, we were hit by a wave of final examinations the like of which had never before been seen in Howland. While we were attempting to study for these, we were given the duty of collecting money for Scrolls during homeroom. This robbed us of our only study hall, so we limped along on what we had learned on the rare occasions when we attended class. Luckily, this was enough, so we passed most of our finals and qualified for graduation at long last. Now we were caught up in the mad rush of announcements, caps and gowns fboth for another outlay of green stuH'j, formals, graduation clothes, presents, thank-you notes, and many more objects too confusing to mention. We danced a little sadly at the Prom and felt just a little nostalgic at baccalaureate, but we recovered in time to enjoy the junior-senior picnic, held on the coldest, wettest day of the year. As commencement began, we all had lumps in our throats, for we realized that this was the last time we would be together at Howland. Everyone looked a little different, and as the ceremony proceeded, we realized that we felt different, too. The lumps disappeared, and we began to feel happy that we had finally made it. After graduation, with our diplomas safely in hand, we happily planned our trip to Put-in-Bay, while dancing at the Grange Hall. We felt that this would be the perfect climax to a wonderful year. We found that we were correctg and although some of us be- came a little green around the gills on the boat, we all tremendously enjoyed our last fling as the Senior Class of 1957. Now we say, Good-by Howland School, and may all your members continue to be blessed with success. We'll think about you often as we journey on our separate ways. Yes, we are leaving, but our memories will live on. 87 Seniors, juniors and their guests were entertained under the sway- ing branches of Hawaiian palms by dancing, eating, hypnosis, and movies at the all night prom held on May 17. as- !
