We are the first class to be graduated from this school. At the beginning of this year it was new and strange to us, but we have grown to love and respect it. May all the classes that follow us learn to appreciate the New Howland High School as we have. Without the help of our parents, teachers, and the other people of the community, this school, of which we are so proud, could never have been possible. Through the sacrifices made by the people of Howland, their will- ingness to do whatever necessary, and their co-operation in planning and constructing, we now have our new school. It is not the building alone, however, that makes our school great. Our faculty and advisors, the school board - these are the people who make our school more than just a building. Through their 'patience and will- ingness to help, they have given us an education that we will never forget - not only in academic subjects, but in getting along with people, and preparing to take our place in the world. As we go out these doors of Howland High, what we have learned here will not be forgotten, and we will have the memories of this, our school, forever. May we put to use these things we have been taught - making the world a better place in which to live - and by so doing show our appreciation. .f . Y !5'f 'Xg5:.3 ' ' ,g F .155 K2 1 XT slip. RCGER COE We, the graduating class of 1951, dedicate the instrumental music section of the Scroll', to our former instructor, Mr. Roger W. Coe. Though he has been ill, and unable to continue his work with us, we think of him whenever we use our instruments. He has tutored most of us through sharps and flats even since we were in fourth grade. From him we have learned to appre- ciate the value of good music. During his many years at Howland, Mr. Coe was more than just a music instructor. He was a friend to whom we could turn when we had a problem. We shall long remember the wonderful times we have enjoyed with Mr. Coe. The band picnics at his home every year have always been something for us to look forward to. Mr. Coe will, indeed, live forever in our hearts. MR. GLESNER GRIFFIN Since Mr. Griffin has been taken from us to serve our country for the second time, our graduating class finds it fitting and proper to dedicate the vocal music section of the Scroll,' to him. Mr. Griffin, during his many years at Howland, has successfully directed us through many musical activi- ties. He tirelessly worked with us so that the music we learned to live and appreciate could be enjoyed by our audiences. We miss Mr. Griffin's friendly smile and, we wish him all the luck in the world until he is safely back in Howland. J C ri F 'TJ Q LLL 5 : c.. Q. u C wr: L A C H: D. Hanson. Page Fi fl y-Um' Uafzsiftl gaslzeflaall geason This year's team will be remembered well in a few years from now when people reminisce about great teams char have represented Howland. This team has been truly great because they have been able to raise to great heights to defeat stronger opponents without gloating about it, and have been able to take a licking without alibing. This has been a school team because they have always placed the interests of the school above that of the team, and the interests of the team above that of the individual. ' Every member of this team is a good student, and an excellent school citizen. Their attitude toward the faculty has been one of consideration, courtesy to the highest degree and complete co-operation. Coach Hei- stand is to be congratulated on tgrning out a great basketball team, and even more for the contribution he has made in encouraging clean habits and good char- acter in this team. The Senior members of this team, Ray Grove, joe Pishotti, jim Shafer, Omar Thomas, and Jomes Wolcott have contributed a great deal to our school this year. Basketball is just one of the noteworthy contributions they have made. Basketball in a school is good if it turns out men of good character. We feel that this yearis team is a good example of the well behaved, well balanced American boy. Bill Cook and Jim Sprague proved themselves to be very capable, dependable Nlanagers. The younger members of the team will be heard from again next year. Whatever these boys decide to do we feel sure that they are going to benefit from their experiences here at Howland. We know that Howland will always remember them as great athletes and great school citi- zens. We shall always be proud of them.
