AND TRIS UOMPLICATE LIFE BUT ARE BASIC Many students see advanced mathe- matics as an impossible field but for Howell's enthusiasts, its mastery is a source of satis- faction and real pleasure. Upper classmen enter the realms of higher math in the forms of advanced alge- bra, solid geometry and trigonometry. In their second year of algebra, students find the emphasis on understanding old formulas and equations while discovering new ones. They are introduced to sets, logarithms, ana- lytical geometry and much more puzzling ma- terial. Seniors are offered a semester each of solid geometry and trigonometry. Solid deals with three dimensions and students must adjust to a new perspective. Projects are made illustrating one of the theorems or axioms. All of the courses are helpful in develop- ing logical thinking and reasoning. Mi -I ff s. Eddie Lucas ponders over an algebra problem while Mr. James Schoeneich concentrates on an- other assignment. Mr. Shoeneich examines Lucy Burke's completed geometry project. In the back- ground, Judy Blaine concentrates on a theorem. Larry Tank, John Beckwith, and Dennis Wenk listen to Bill Blacks expert advice on as- sembling solid geometry projects.
