It may be a collection place for autographsg a memory book of school days, a history of all school activitiesgor an account of the happenings of the school and community The 1957 TORCH does all of these things. Through the pages of our book we have tried to give the reader a glimpse of Howell as a growing city, presenting many of the reasons why we are proud of Howell as a place to live, go to church, work, shop, learn and play. Through our high school days we are most concerned about the opportunities offered us at Howell High School. In the EDUCATION section you will find familiar class- room scenes along with the many teachers, administra tors custodians, cooks and bus drivers that help make our school more meaningful An important aspect of school life IS learning to get along with our classmates and teachers and to improve ourselves on a social level The many extra curricular ACTIVITIES give us an opportunity to Join clubs and or ganizations of our own choosing, and to work together to better our school Our pride in our school IS emphasized in our many athletic teams because we can be sure that when a team takes the field wearing the GREEN and GOLD of Howell, will uphold the tradition of good sportsmanship we cher ish We are happy for the many athletic events through out the year which permit us to participate as players spectators bandsmen or cheerleaders In years to come we will be able to turn to the CLASS section to recall fond memories of classmates that may have been forgotten with passing years W will remember many of the happy times we had at Howell High School, and all of the fine friendships that were formed during our high school careers 3 , - 1 x . 9 D it 1 , . . . Howell is a growing community as is evidenced by our new hospital, and several new industries that have been started in the past year. The building boom has also given us many fine new homes. No matter what your faith you will find a friendly church in which to worship God. Howell prides itself on its excellent churches, giving everyone the chance to make religion a vital part of his or her life. Recreation facilities are unlimited in and around Howell. Many fine lakes and streams give the swimmer or fisher- man ample opportunity to test his skill. A sporty nine- hole golf course is available. An active recreation board plans many functions for kids from six to sixty. Our PTA helps keep our school tops in education by constantly offering assistance in every way possible. It is an active and alert group of parents and teachers. mmunitg ,4 r I, -nn 3, , ww Q fmffm ...M Hug lfl. ' 1:4- ? Bus routes and schedules have to be worked out so that students are not kept on the busses longer than necessary. Class schedules must fit together to provide each stu- dent the opportunity to take all the subjects he wants and needs. Classification is a king sized job that takes many hours of careful preparation. The best possible educational program must be worked out to fit into available facilities. The school must under- stand the pupi1's needs and look for the best ways and the best teachers to fill those needs. All of these things are the responsibilities that fall on the broad shoulders of the administration, board of educa- tion, teachers and interested townspeople. The fact that our schools rate so high in state education circles gives ample proof of the fine job being done at Howell High School. Howell High School offers not only the formal education of the classroom, but also gives the interested student a chance to learn on an informal plane as well, through the varied club and organization program. The student may be interested in wood-working or atomic power. There is a chance for him to increase his knowledge by joining the hobby club or senior science club. He will get to know the sponsor and all of the members on a social level, and an exchange of ideas will flow with ease. Learning to get along with people is one of the big- gest challenges of our school students today. With more and more people flocking into our schools, it is many times harder to adjust to the busy turmoil than in previ- ous times. The intimate atmosphere of the club meeting gives everyone a chance for recognition and participation. C0llllH'lllliYl' ,Xllllc-tics is Sllvssml in U.A.A. Believing that our athletic program is a vital part of our total educational program, the board feels that athletics deserves its place along with English, chemistry or history. Participation in athletics carries a special responsibil- ity for the athlete. As a representative of the school, the player must be aware that the entire commlmity is watch- ing him. His conduct on and off the field reflects the training and coaching he has received as a member of a sports squad. Favorite expressions of the day were They sure faked me out, or Best you do it! The merits of crooners Elvis Presley and Pat Booneg or of presidential candidates Eisenhower and Stevenson, were familiar debating topics. Pizza pie became a more popular refreshment than chocolate malts -- and more expensive! Calypso moved in on Rock and Roll. These trends 'added spice' to school life and helped to unite the student body. Hoping to give better service to the advertisers in the Torch, the yearbook staff decided to use pictorial adver- tising for the first time this year. The idea met with such enthusiastic response that less than half of the firms contacted were able to get space in our advertising section. We think that we have an interesting section, and one that will have lasting value. You will meet old friends as you glance through these pages, and your attention will be called to the merchants stores in which you do much of your buying. Because of the fine support of our advertising section, the Torch staff was able to reduce the cost of the book to the student by a substantial margin. Your appreciation of this fact can be shown by continued patronization of the business places represented in our advertising section.
