PAGE GREETHNG T0 THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1947 It IS a pleasure to extend a greeting to the Class of l947 and through your year book to the members of the teaching staff students of Howell High School and residents of our community The first class to complete its course in Howell High School was grad uated in 1869 Smce that date each year with the smgle exception of 1880 your high school has provided a group of trained young people to make their contribution to the welfare of their community and their nation These graduates have faced the problems of their times have had an active part in finding a solution to these problems and have done much to Justify the confidence of the people in the American system of public ducatlon During these past few years in general and these past few months in particular wrlters commentators and platform speakers have shown a disturbing tendency to expend their genius on finding words to describe the trage dy, of our world Words such as war torn devastated disturbed sor rowmg have been used with such monotonous frequency that some of us have become tired of them while others have become completely convinced is not going to be bettered by those who can do nothmg but weep over the ruins about them That IS the road to failure it is the road to despair It IS the opposite of a stubborn faith and as students and teachers of Howell High School we are not in that business I firmly believe and I hope you believe that the flnal hope for our world is not ir a United Nations nor in atomic power nor any complicated system of government control That final hope rests in personality in the guided ideas of you boys and girls who have been and are still enrolled in our public schools We trust that you will not become men and women set in your ways full of preJud1ces prone to take to yourselves the words of cynlclsm and despair and unhealthy self criticism so prevalent today Your school has given you the opportunity to develop your human and natural resources plus some spiritual ones as well If this development has been strong vigorous and intelligently done there is no ceiling in opportumty I shall always be interested ln your welfare and success Loyally John S Page Page 3 ' I ' ' 1 1 ' 1 ' of the hopelessness of our situation. Receiving our class rings made this vear very important We walked th ough the halls for a week afterwards with our heads in the air and our rings flashing in front of us After football season we had the annual tug o war and the class of 46 won The next important item was to raise enough money to put on a J Hop in honor of the class of 46 We staged a carnival that vvas a big suc cess and raised our bank account for the time be Page Z ing After that we worked day and mght for the next month on the decorations for the J Hop The theme was Alice in Wonderland As we walked into the gym even though somewhat tired a proud feeling went through our hearts It really was beautiful Our class officers for our last year ln school were Barbara McQu1llan pres Bob Ramsey vice pres Mary Jane Walker sec Tom Dever eaux treas and Charlotte Rogers treas We had a rragazme sale during the f1rst month in school to start the ball rolling After football season we had the tug o wal and this time we won by a wide margin Later in the year the Juniors gave a Tug party for our class that was enjoyed by all the members With the beginning of the second semester we found ourselves head over heels in wo1k W spare moments we tried to finish our yearbook The sen1or play was held on April 10 and 11 Even though we had to spend many long hours of practice on the play it was vsell worth our effort The days seemed to be going very quickly Before we knew it it was time for our long avvaited senior trip On May 21 we left for De troit by bus and then took a boat to Buffalo W were gone three days and the fun that we had will long be remembered The next big event was the J Hop that the Juniors held in our honor This was important for most of us because this was our last J Hop It ls with regret that we realize that our school days are draw1ng to a close but with satisfaction N o matter where we go or what we do our lives will be rich with memories of Howell High 2 A. .
