With two returning letter- men from the preceding campaign, Coach Davis had to build his team mainly from last year's Reserve squad, and by County Tourney time, he had a fairly rugged outfit shaped. This year was a building season tor Mr. Davis, and with tour starting Sophomores and two important luniors from this slate, Howe should boast a winning quintet in the next two seasons. THE TEAM At center was Senior lohn Kerregan, team captain, who was one of the returning regulars trorn last year's team. At ffl , Big lohnw accomplished a rnaiority of the squads rebounding, and was among the top scorers. Sophoe more Pete Bouton, the other letterrpan of '51, played a regular forward position throughout the season, and was the top scorer ot the year. Iunior forward Mike Lynch began the season with the Reserves, but quickly climbed the ladder and by the end of the season, was playing regular Varsity ball. lim Weiss, another lunior, helped the squad considerably from his forward position with a dependable display ot speed and Versatility. Sophomore Don Smith came up from last year's Freshman team to cop a starting spot, and sparked the play continually with his sparkling spirit. Sophomore Tom Pope-k did a very respect- able job at guard and his passing set up many tigues in the Howe scoring column. lack Williams, a Senior who didn't become eligible to play until early February, was a great help during his short stint on the court. lack's 6'4 ot know-how boosted the squad considerably at the Sectionals. Dick Taylor, another Senior who will be gone next year, was an intramural product, and, though he didn't see much action, his spirit and patter encouraged the boys a great deal. Wcvwdzfq guage!! The biggest loss to Howe Cinder hopes was Stan Loos, who graduated in '51, after placing second in the state broad jump finals. lt is to be noted that lndiana high schools are not athletically classified according to size: thus, Loos was competing against the cream of every district in the state, Loos holds the school broad jump record with a distance of 22' M , and established the regional record in this event in 1950. The absence of Loos, coupled with the loss of '51 grads DeBerry, Gomez, Mallett, and last year's top 440 man, Torn Scott, who did not return to school, dealt a painful blow to this year's prospects. Iohn Russert, 1952 team captain and high point man, ran the 100 and 220 yard dashes, along with Keith Duley and lim Weiss. Russert and Duley also represented Howe in the shot put event.
