Sword and Shield, the group pictured above, is that part of the student body which actively participates in administration of the school. Meeting once weekly with the Superintendent, P.M.S.cSfT., and Commandant they bring to the attention of that group any problems which have been communicated to them either through the mass of the student body, or through the Non-com Officers' Club which meets one day earlier. The equivalent, in high school, of Sword and Shield, is that body known as the student council. ln this function the S. G S. legislates on any proposed changes in school functioning. Their changes are subject to approval of the school officials, but the Voice of the Student receives its due each Sunday nite when these boys meet prepared to give thorough examination to the problems which rise through the year. President of the club, cue to his status, is Battalion Commander Bob Wolters. The secretary, named ex officio, is Cadet Capt. Dick Bennett, Adjutant. - ' aimed Ojfczaa Zia Standing: Underwood G, Partridge C, Burke, Fox, Roethel, Todorari, Jones D. I. Seated: Laven, Pappas, Col, Bouton, lnsley, Henyon. The Non-Commissioned Officers' Club, shown below, is formed on the same principle as the Officers' group, Sword and Shield. Meeting each week with the Superintendent, the N.C.O. Club discusses pertinent problems found from day to clay in school life. They pass along sug- gestions, both from members of the corps to the office, and from the officers to the men in the respective companies. The garrison hat in the picture below represents the officer of the day who meets with the N.C.O. group to carry any measures which they may think necessary to the Sword and Shield, meeting a day later. The group is small and select, due to the rather strict entrance require- ments imposed upon those who try to get in. To become eligible for the A.D.T., a cadet if Senior or lunior must have sported an academic average of 3.20, plus A conduct and satisfactory military grades, for three months. lf he be a Sophomore or Freshman, he must fulfill the same requirements for four months. Chuck Babcock Once again the Howe Herald, weekly newspaper published by members of the corps, proved an important part of campus life. Dutifully recording the events which took place over the course ot the school year, the Herald lived up to the standard set by last year's paper. Faculty advisor of the Herald for the past year was Capt. I. P. Hart, Howe 'l5, who also served as the head of the Howe public relations department. The paper again fulfilled its three-fold aims, namely: to keep both cadets and faculty informed as to school happenings, to furnish patrons a complete picture of current school happenings, and to act as a contact for alurnxi through- out the years. Requirements for membership were strict, to set a high standard of speech performance at Howe K to become eligible one must either have the speaking points necessary to be a member in the Howe chapter of the National Forensic League, or in dramatics a member must have achieved a certain level of performance. Mr. Lester Tucker, Howe speech coach and faculty advisor of the club since l942, this year found his other duties too time-consuming, and so resigned the post of faculty advisor. He was succeeded by Mr. Robert Tweedle, of the English department, who went on to direct the club in its various activities. Mr. Tucker was elected to honorary membership by the club. Howe has developed, over a period of years, a program of speech par- ticipation unrivalled in the area or in a school of Howe's size and type. Receiving a charter in the National Forensic League in l947, Howe entered the field of competitive speaking with but a small nucleus of boys. The last charter member of the National Forensic League, Larry Bouton, left in the graduating class of l949. Now, with three years of N.F.L. work behind them, Howe speakers, through the guidance of Mr. Lester M. Tucker, have put themselves in the first place position among N.F.L. schools in the state of Indiana. Surviving class compe- tition from other Indiana schools, based upon number of members and number of honorary degrees, Howe speakers led the state for the first time in March l95O. Cadet Louie Mushro, president of the Comus Club, won state titles in the National Forensic League contests held at Terre Haute, Indiana, in dramatic declamation and oratoryg he also won a second in poetry. Louie proceeded to the finals held at Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he carried the name of Howe to fourth place in the dramatic contests. Also at the Terre Haute meet Bob Hunter won the first place award in the radio announcing contest. NATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY Top row: Konkle, Driskell, Steers, Underwood G., Partridge C. On that day, aspirants for positions on the l949 Varsity football squad began their annual toil, with morning and evening sessions each day until the opening of school a week later. Meeting with Head Coach EL. Moore the few returning lettermen and the reserves of the preceding season were faced with the task of filling gaps opened in the squad by the previous graduation. Coach Mcore and his assistants, Mr. Tingley and Mr. Davis, wasted no time in looking for candidates to replace those who didn't return: indeed, they found themselves confronted with the prospect of far fewer returning letterrnen than any coach normally demands as a nucleus for a football machine. Skip Rice was shifted from his position at end to quarter, handling the field generalship through the media of Coach Moores tricky T-formation. Douq Weller started the season at right half, and was a real battering ram until an injured leg in the third game of the season put him on the sidelines. Varnum Irvine took over where Weller left off, and continued to be a threat, while not displaying the line-plunqinfl power of his predecessor, he was always effective to the outside. At the other half the cadets banked on Rope Thompson, the workhorse of the backfield. He was always a threat to break off tackle or around the ends, Stan Richards filled the role of driving fullback, and was usually hard to handle through the middle. Real coaching dilemnas came to Mr. Moore with the line, where he had few lettermen upon whom to call. Doug Reid and Dave Hughes fortified the wings, and the action that they saw in the previous season enabled them to snag passes and cover the flanks effectively. The Captain, Bob Walters, held down left tackle all year, playing sixty minute ball most of the time he lived up to his title. At the other tackle it was a nip and tuck battle beween Dale Post and Egore Laven, both turning in fine performances for their Varsity emblems. The guards were opposites: Iohn Nesbitt was small and fast, lim Bartoo big and burly. Both seemed to cooperate well, and Bart's playing led him to honorable mention in the all state football awards. Ces lnsley moved up a step from his defensive center post of last year to handle duties both over the ball and as a line backer. The Cadet eleven thus formed started the season with a hairbreadth defeat at the hands of Cassopolis, Michigan High, eight to seven. A walkaway against North Iudson preceded a hard fought loss to Morgan Park of Chicago, l3-O. Wih three veterans from the championship team of last year back, the Howe Cadets undertook the tremendous task of defending their sectional and county championships with the odds all against them. The cagers just didn't get the breaks, losing five games by less than seven points and ending the season with a record ot' eight wins and thirteen losses. The three veterans, co-captains Skip Rice and Dave Hughes and Stan Richards worked as a team from the start, but Coach Davis had trouble finding men with the experience necessary to fill the shoes of Poliak and Griffith, who added polish to last year's team. Coach Davis found the answer in four boys, Sam Pruett, Dan Neidballa, Allie Reynolds, and lim Kellett. Using these boys, all of whom are luniors, in different combinations, Coach Davis developed an offense that began to click after the county tourney. THE TEAM: FIVE TOPNOTCH HANDLERS Skip Rice, a three year man, was the team's leading scorer, hitting with magnificent l5 pant average and 317 points from the left forward slot. Dave Hughes handled the other forward dumping in points to the tune of a 12 point average. While Dave did his share of scoring, his real value lay in his ability to throttle opposing scoring threats. Stan Richards, the third member of the trio, proved a fine rebounder, especially defensively. At six feet three, Stan was really a tower of Strength under the baskets. Sam Pruett, a Senior playing his first year on the VarSity, saw plenty of action at the guard spot, putting his ball handling finesse to good advantage. Dan Neidballa, who will be back next year as part of the nucleus cf next year's team, was another guard on whorri Coach Davis counted heav- ily this year. Dan, although small in stature, proved a big asset with his play-making ability. Allie Beynolds started the season as a second string forward, but was rrioved to guard to provide the Cadets with some much needed scoring power in the back court. Allie is another lunior who will tigure prominently next season. lim Kellett's long set shots kept the Cadets in many a ballgame this past season and lim will be back for an- other go at it corne 'fifty-one. THE RECORD The Cadets opened the season against the scourge of the county the Brighton Wildcats. The Brighton team invaded the Howe gym with four Co'C P 'i s Rice and Hughes garries, all victories, already salted away and took home the county horseshoe and a close 45 to 4l decision. The Cadets came back to whip Lima and Scott soundly before they dropped an- other one, this time to Huntertown. The Howe cagers came back a little early after Christmas to enter the Huntington Holiday tourney, but the long lay-off left thern a trifle slow, and they lost in the first round of the affair to Huntington Catholic. The Cadets dropped three in a row Coaches Davis and Tingley before they again hit the victory trail against Lima, with a smashing 53 to 33 victory. CADETS DROP THE SECTIONALS Alter losing one to Angola, the Cadets began their defense of the l.aCrarige county charripionship by beating Topeka 48 to 29. Fate turned its back on the Cadets once again in the second garne as they lost to their old bug-afboo, Brighton, El tc Sl, The Howe boys lost to Morgan Park before corn' ing back aganst LaGrange. George Lisle was the first man out on the mat tor the Cadets all year, and his efforts were usually rewarded by giving Howe an early lead. George took a third in the sectionals this year and he will be back next season to aim at an even higher mark. Roger lones, a new man this year, carrge through in the lU5 lb. class, so well in fact, that he ended the season as the number three scorer on the squad. Henry, who have done an excellent job ot bringing along an inexperienced squad to accomplish such a fine record. A new sport this year, Cross Country destined to take its place as a major sport at Howe. Under the direction of Coach Hoffman a qroup of hardy Howe athletes braved the cold fall winds to run over hilll and dale for a distance of two miles. The scoring ot the meets is done similar to a marathon with the winner aettinq no points, one for second, two for third and so on, the team with ihe lowest score winninq. DeBerry and Konlcle were the leading Cadet runners with l4 and l7 points respectively. Konkle was elected the first captain of the new sport, with De- Berry and Gomez elected cc-captains for next season. it is not always the team with the fastest men that wins in cross country, for team balance is perhaps more important in this sport than any other. l-lowe's team, althouqh it had its individual stars in Konkle and DeBerry found that a good measure of its success resulted from the fifth and sixth place efforts of George Fox, Louis Mushro, Demet tones, Tim Gomez, Dick Sparks, and several others. The team ended its season with a fine record for an inexperienced team of two wins and four losses, plus a fine showing in the sectionals. Wcvzcdtq golf 43 Capt, Cieri, Coach, Moore, Sparks, Fenger, Babcock. Golf this year became a varsity sport for the first time at Howe. Although in the previous year Howe had been represented in the sectional golf tourna- ment l95O was the first year in which a regularly-scheduled season was out- lined for the Howe linksmen. Started at first under the coaching of Mr. EL. Moore, the team finished the season mentored by Capt. William Cieri, who took over at Mr. Moore's illness midway in the season. Generously, the membership of Klinger Lake Country Club, in Sturgis, Michigan, offered the use of their course to the Howemen several times a week: this practice, coupled with the practice ground set aside for iron shots here on the campus, enabled the team to keep in comparative trim, tEd. note: at this writing the team has lost their first match, to Fort Wayne South Side High School: in addition to a return match with this school, they have matches scheduled with Concordia of Fort Wayne and Kendallvillel G O L F May 5 South Side Lost May l'S Concordia There 7 Thts year was a banner year for the tntramural program Desptte sttlf competltton C Company walked off wlth champtonshlps rn football all three leagues rn basketball and the annual company tra k meet tt has an excellent hance of copptng the softball trtle also for a clean sweep of the tntramural sports The football season saw C annex 1ts ftrst t1tle led by the ftne back Btll Ballenger B Company slugged tts way rnto second place behtnd the hard runntng of Roger Hanna A Company found Al Madan the btg cog tn tts football machtne thus each company had at least one outstandtng back and a ftne balanced squad to go wrth 1t ln basketball C agam showed the way tn all three leagues Its A team won 1n a walk wlth lrvlne Lower L1sle Laven and Carhsle as the start mg ftve Rope Thompson and Loute Pappas led the B team to a hard fought from C agatn comlng through The Intramural track meet 1S the htgh l1ght of the tntramural sports season because both the regular mtramural boys and the Varslty men compete Thls year the cmder honors went to Yes C Company B Company was second and A Company the perennlal favorlte thrrd The top 1nd1v1dual performances of the meet were turned rn by Hughes Irvme Gomez DeBerry Loos and RICE The softball season ts Just getttng underway but at thts pomt most of the orps IS gtvtng C a good chance for a clean sweep ot the tntramural sports ttles although both th other compan1es wlll held strong teams and tney wut all be out to defeat C pany C .
