HOWE SCHOOL practlcally ellmlnated, as dunng sleepmg hours the electrlc wnres are dxsused and no fires are mamtamed except nn the detached power house All dormltorles are under the constant patrol of a watchman each nxght THE UPPER SCHOOL was completed ln the fall of I907 and IS admlrably adapted to the needs of the Juniors and the seniors It comprlses three stones above basement, and the walls are of a buff pressed brlck, wlth dormered roofs stamed red The type of architecture IS French Gothlc The mterlor fimsh IS natural wood and the maple floors are stamed The entrances conduct to a large llvmg room on the first floor equlpped wxth a red brxck fire place and mgle seats and furmshed with rugs and mlssxon tables and easy chaxrs makmg an Ideal hall for boys when off duty In the base ment are the lavatones wxth shower baths The students rooms are large and well lxghted many of them bemg en suxte Three masters are ln resldence m this bulldmg The buxldmg lS a memornal to john B Howe and cost S15 000 THE MIDDLE ScHooL lS a very spacious brxck buxldmg of three stones besldes the basement It IS locally known as Howe Hall The mterlor finlsh IS of Georgla pme wlth hardwood floors On the first floor ns a large receptlon hall flanked by the Principal s office a receptlon room and the barber s shop Next comes the assembly room for the Mlddle School The second and thnrd floors have rooms for the students the majornty bemg large for two occupants and a good number bemg smgle for one occupant Each bedroom has a clothes closet and necessary furnlture Some of the masters have quarters ln thus buxldmg In the basement are the lava tones sufliclently equlpped for a hundred boys w1th mdxvxdual wash bowls havmg hot and cold water Besides several shower baths here 15 the mdoor swxmmnng pool full of fresh tepld water where a boy can take a real plunge to has hearts content m perfect safety w1thout ex posure to the weather Adjommg this buxldmg and ln effect practlcally a part of lt lS THE GYMNASIUM the glft of the late James B Howe Its spacious floor IS maple 1a1d upon cement The balcony extends entlrely around the great room and IS designed for a runnlng track Provision IS made for basket ball and other mdoor games, for exercises w1th the usual apparatus and for roller skatmg Th1s gymnaslum also serves for a dr1ll room m xnclement weather The lavatorxes open dlrectlv from lt The Mxddle School 16 1 ' - I , . - , - . . .
