Wider than any blmd mind can see. I Am African Sweeter than any skintone can show. Larger than any shallow soul can explore. Pure as the first womb that burst the shore. I flow through time. Through lost throne days, Through the splitting of child from mother. Through the village fires and the cotton fields, I llow threatening to burst the dam, the DAM, DAM, DAM! That prohibits my freedom, my nationhood I flow crushed bv the merciless gravity Of Imperialism I llow into the deepest destructive conditions. I flow containing the memories of a voyage that created a NEW ESSENCE, and I REMAIN STANDING I Am African Lying on the roads of return. Speaking many rhythms. Singing many songs, Yet. crying the same tears. You see me angry in many lands. With one central flame, One common cause. One common enemy. I moan, I groan. I scream, I moan, I shout, and my echo shatters the Spirit, and awakens my shouting soul. Puts life into my dry bones. Tor freedom awaits my claiming I Am African Ripping, cutting. Splitting, Slashing Gashing, Lashing, The dark clouds that shade the horizons of my rebirth I Am African Assaulting the vend and the aRes, Today preparing for the children's rich future. And that future is NOW I AM African, I Am Africa, land of Moses, Cradle of civilization. Rising on the butterfly of divine revelation. Rising on the tradcwmds ol unity Deeper than the fathomless. Fathomless, fathomless Depth. Or any eye. Or sociologist. Or archeologist. Or psychiatrist. Or scientist, Can seel foe I am the first womb that bursts the shore I am Man and Woman. I Am African. Homecoming 1977 179 190 ✓ !81 The Show Ift4 The People IW 187 188 189 A swarming defense and a 21-point explosion in the second quarter enabled the Bison to defeat Virginia State and maintain the Howard traditon of having never lost a Homecoming game. The Trojans came into the game with a four-game winning streak and a stable of fleet running backs and receivers, but were never able to get on track against the aggressive Bison defenders. Midway through the second quarter, Howard broke a scoreless tie wide open by registering 21 points in a 72-second span. The defense, which limited State to only 36 yards rushing all day. gave the Bison their first break when William Lee intercepted a pass and returned it to the Virginia State 33-yard line. Quarterback Bryan Thomas hit tight end Fitz Fowler with a 20-yard pass to the 17-yard line and five plays later. Thomas bulled in from the one to give the Bison a 7-0 lead. 190 On the Trojans next possession. nll-CIAA running back. Rufus Crawford, fumbled a pilchout on first down and Glen Frazier recovered for Howard on the visitor’s38. A major penalty mover! the ball to the 23-yard line just before Thomas found wide receiver Darryl Dennis alone in the end zone and hit him with a touchdown pass. Howard’s third touchdown of the quarter was another gift from Crawford who returned the ensuing kickoff to his own one-yard line and then fumbled in the end zone two plays later. His fumble was recovered by sophomore linebacker Scott Facvson and Howard had a 21-0 half time lead. The Bison’s first half outburst would be enough to beat the inept Trojans who were unable to mount any kind of attack. When they were not being smothered by the Bison defense, they were ! eating themselves with mistakes. The Trojans fumbled five times, had four passes intercepted and at least two sure touchdown passes dropped. Howard did not let up against the Trojans in the second half either, but continued to build their lead. Howard Ward, who had already booted three extra points, kicked a 34-yard field goal in the third period. Senior defensive end Paul Ball then opened the fourth quarter by sacking quarterback Tony Coldren in the end zone for a safety to give the Bison a comfortable 26-0 lead. Coach Doug Porter began substituting freely after that and freshman running back Veeman Beasley, who was not even listed on the roster, capped the scoring with a spinning, tackle-breaking 16-yard romp on the final play of the game. The highly charged Bison offense rolled up 344 total yards for the game including 223 through the air. Thomas led the three Howard quarterbacks by completing seven of fourteen passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. Halfback Gary Madden led the ground attack by rushing for 62 yards on 13 carries. -Steven Jones- 191 ADMINISTRATION Images ot Warm Black tow I remember that time vividly Grandmother -Jowly turning the Irving ch.c ken, admonishing her granddaughter, Vow don't you go out and got all dirty, company's coming soon! Grandmother s kitchrn was always warm and friendly. Through childish eyes it seemed larger than life, the refrigerator one had to stand on tippy-toes to reach, the counter on which only an elfish black chin could rest: over which two bright eyes peered. And Grandmotlier. The warm, pretty smile, a smile bestowed upon Bcloscd grandchildren; a frown appearing seldom, at which these grandchildren shuddered Those talented, soft hands — wonderful to hold — reminded me of good things to come after the long, long Sunday Services — biscuits, country ham, eggs, sausage, grits, orange juice, homemade jelly . . Her voice soft, yet strong — hardly ever raised, unless the worst offense was committed To be developed in Grandmother's warm black love — lor a Sunday, a weekend, a lifetime. Called Grandmother as a child, only ol late does she allow me to call her Grandma — her stance weakened by the influx of many more grandchildren — and only of late k I allow her to call me by many other names, my stance weakened by ever increasing love, ever increasing understanding We have both grown, she in wisdom, I in maturity. Charles Moseley Staff Writer (Foot hall) In retrospect the “Big Blue Bison gave their fans an occasional glimpse of thunder, yet lacked the consistency needed to win the conference title. According to Coach Douglass Porter the team was unable to escape the injury jinx.” which plagued the offensive line. Throughout the season the Big Blue Bison rolled over their weaker opponents hut lacked the depth to defeat such power houses as Florida A M, North Carolina A T. anti South Carolina State. The climax of an otherwise average 5-5 season, resulted when Howard rolled over Southern University in Baton Rouge. I,x uisiana. This marked the first time Howard had defeated a 222 member of the South Western Athletic Conference. Coach Porter always quick to admonish the responsibility of producing educated athletics, proudly acknowledged the 14 players who received degrees. handle the dual role of student • athlete were James Breakfield, Marco Morgan, Keith Napier, James Hunter, and Herman Redden. Coach Porter is quite optimistic that such returning players as Brian Thomas, Theodore Robinson, .Steve Wilson, and Scott Facyson will provide the winning nucleus for the team. 223 Among these dedicated individuals able to 224 225 SOCCER 227 228 Although the Bison’s were unsuccessful in their bid for the conference title it marked the end of a great college career for Cerald “Dr. G” Glover. Glover, a 6 foot 7 native of Atlanta. Ga., often brought fans to their feet, shouting in a frenzy, after throwing down a slam dunk. The slender forward was voted Player-of-the-Vear in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and became the first basketball player in the history of Howard University to be drafted by the National Basketball Association. Coach A. B. Williamson’s unsung hero, Mike Nettles, also ended a fine career at Howard becoming the teams most consistent performer. 220 Basketball Men Charles Moseley - Staff Writer The 1977-78 Howard University basketball season was filled with excitement primarily due to the fast tempo of play implemented bv coach A. B. Williamson. After a successful tour by the team in Brazil, the squad ran off a string of victories at Burr Gymnasium. With an 11-3 record and a tie with arch-rival Nort h Carolina A T the stage was set for the showdown. Howard's valiant attempt to defeat the Aggies fell short in a thrilling 94-85 double-overtime loss. The squad was unable to regain the momentum they had sustained earlier in the year. 231 233 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 234 236 237 VOLLEYBALL The Bisonettes The Women’s Volley hull Team hud unothcr winning season this year. With Winsome (Skinny) Davidson and Batty Symonettc as the only returning players. Coach Jackie Cody and her assistant coach Sylvia Groomes rebuilt the team to end with a 15-2 winning record. Coach Cody assembled the ten woman team with sis outstanding walk-ons and two recruitments, Deborah Davis (F) and Margaret Albury (F). The six walk-ons were Paula Hopson (S), Annette Wynn (F). Sharon Hayes (S), Cynthia Minus (F). Tangita Thomas (F), and Cheryl Humphrey’ (S). The team had very strong opponents this year. Georgetown University, Maryland University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and George Washington University. They travelled to the James Madison Invitational and brought back a second place trophy. They also won second place in the CCC (City) Tournament. On their winning way to the EAIA H' Begionals the team was stopped in their tracks this year hceause of another bad error by the Administration of the Athletic Department. I bet you’ve been wondering just why you didn't get your yearbook in May. Well l ecause we had a little problem. That problem was the book was not due until September. Now don’t get me wrong, the book is late, but did you care to find out how the book was doing during the school year, to offer a little help. If you didn't care then why care now. This is your book and there are a lot of little things that can be done which would l e a great help. We here at the BISON have labored endlessly to bring you a yearlxiok which will not only make you happy today, but bring back memories in the years to come. On behalf of the BISON Yearbook Staff I would like to say thanks for waiting. With a little help from our friends we did it all. I would like to give thanks to everyone involved with our production. And together we hope it finds its own little place in your heart, flood luck next year. Ronald K. Hamilton MY SPECIAL THANKS TO: Annette Wynn Paula R.
