Opening Convocation 1976 Each year students, faculty, and the administration gather in Cramton to celebrate the formal opening of school and to renew Howard's committment to academic excellence. Convocation attracts guests of national and international importance and the ceremony is traditionally highlighted by a guest speaker. The guest speaker for Convocation, 1976 inspired more than admiration. The Honorable William Tolbert, President of the Republic of Liberia, received an honorary degree, in addition to delivering the keynote speech. However, a demonstration led by the Organization of African Students protested the honoring of Dr. Tolbert. Admidst a peaceful demonstration the Howard community re-dedicated itself to scholarly and intellectual pursuits. Convocation. 1976 23
