Jr. has assisted the progress ot Civil Rights in this country tor moro than a decade He was sworn In as Chairman of tho U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission srnce its inception in 1965 He sorved as General Counsel of the Civil rights Commisson for more then three yoars. was an attorney m the 01-tico of the Solicitor. U S Department ot Labor and as Ass-stont U. S Attorney for the Department of Justice m the Eastern District of New York Following as association with the law firm of Wachtel ond Michaelson, New York, he started a private practice in Mineda. New York He worked as special counsel to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. During thi9 samo period, ho was Special Counsel to Joseph F Carfino. then speaker of the New York State Assembly. Mr Powell, born in Mineola. Now York on February 11. 1937. received the B A degree, magna cum laude. from Howard University in 1953. He later received the Juris Doctor degroe from Harvard University and the Master of Laws degree from Now York University Graduate School of Law Alma Woodsey Thomas In the fields of Art and Colonfics When Alma Woodsey Thomas received the 8 S. degree from Howard University in 1924. she also recoived tho distinction of being the first graduate of Howard's Department of Art. Sho received the M.A dogroo from Columbia University In 1934. and studied painting at American University from 1950-60 She is perhaps best know for her earth and space paintings which are abstractions composed ot mosaic patte'ns in concentric circlos and straight lines in vibrant colors Though Inspired entiroiy by nature, she says sho is also indebted to the tradition of color painting made famous by this city. Ms. Thomas born In Columbus Georgia, on September 22. 1894 was brought to Washington. D.C. as a small child and has livod hero ever since She taught at Shaw Junior High School from 1924 until her retirement in 1960. Since that time she has devoted her energies to painting and has represented at more than 70 shows, including major national exhibitions of contemporary Black artists. Her one-woman exhibitions have been held at the Franz Bader Gallery, the Whitney Musuem of American Art. the Corcoran Gallery Of Art and at Fisk and Howard Universities Frederic Ellis Davison In the folds of Military Science and Public Service The highest ranking graduate of Howard's ROTC program Major General Frederic Ellis Davison. USA (Ret ). is internationally recognized for his extraordinary leadership qualities and talents in military operations. His commit-mom to public service has been evidenced through Ns outstanding ability and his wide knowledge of military tactics Gonoral Davison, born in Washington. D.C. on September 28. 1917. received the BS. and M S degrees In aoology and chemistry from Howard University In 1938 and 1940. respoct voly. In 1946 he was separated from the Army and enrolled in the Howard University College of Modicine for one year; therafter. he returned to the Army as company commandor at Ft Dix. N.J. In 1963. he received the M.A. degree in International Affairs from George Wash ngton University. He was honored by the Howard Univoreity Alumni Federation for outstanding public service in 1973. Beginning his career as a second lieutonant In tho U S. Army in 1939. he became the third Black ever to achieve the rank of Gonoral in tho United Statos Armed Services and the first to lead an Integrated combat infantry division Prior to his assignment as Commanding general of the Military District of Washington in November. 1973. he had completed two other assignments of the same level In Vietnam and in Germany. James Henry Merrlwethor Hondorson in the fields of Biological Science and Research Recogn zed as one of the nation's leading biologists. Dr. James H. M. Henderson is director ot the Carver Research Foundation at Tuskegee Institute He has also held several other positions at Tuskegee m the span of his throe decades of service to that institution. Through his career, he has been a frequent contributor to scientific journals as a result of his extensive rosonrch In plant physiology and biochemistry In 1964. he was cited for conspicuous service in the field of biology by Howard's General Alumni Association An active member of numerous professional organizations. Or Henderson was appointed to the Commission on Undergraduate Education in the Biological Sciences in 1965 and has served as consultant to two panels ot the National Academy of Sciences Since 1973, he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the National Council of University Resoarch Administrators and is past chairman of the American Society of Plant Physiologists Southern Section. After earning the B S degree from Howard University in 1939. he enrolled in the University of Wisconsin whero he was awarded tho M.Ph and Ph.D dogreos In 1940 and 1943. respectively He did further study at the California Institute of technology irom 1948-50 and at the Oak Ridgo Institute for Nucioar Studios in 1951. Recently appointed as co-chairman ol the University's Bequest Committee. Dr Henderson was born in Falls Church. Vo on August 10. 1971
